Black Star as a non-enchanting mage...impossible?

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 10:36 pm

OK, this thing is kicking my rear end BAD...3 fireball spamming mobs, and the only defense I've got is a ward (which is self defeating because it just svcks my mana out rendering me incapable of doing any damage) or a potion (which only prevents 20% of the one-shot-kill fireballs they're tossing). Only thing I can figure is to spam fire atronochs, but these jerks heal themseleves, and it's DPS isn't enough to down even one.

Is there any way to beat this other than going to the Companions and becoming a werewolf to rip those fireball spammers up, or spending a zillion gold to powerskill enchanting, find a fire resist item, and win that way?

ice damage my friend, using fire against fire is a bad idea. or you could just go to the guy in winterhold and make it black star instead of a white star

Depends on your surroundings, are you in narrow cave/room or outside. And if its humans or monsters, like hagravens or dragonpriest. If its just humans and you have the room. Strafe, let them fire away, and heal when needed if they happen to hit you, eventually they will drown there magicka and charge you with whatever weapon they have, thats when you kill them.
But three will be kinda hard, usually used this on one or two casters, havent had to use it on three so cant really say it will be just as effective. If you have archery you could use drain magicka poisons or silence.

edit: oh, necromancers, just strafe em, kill there manapool.

Atronachs work horribly cause the guy behind the Dremora will just vary his spell to hit their weakness,

Without getting 0 cost casting, I prettymuch found it to be basically a "Chug every potion possible to stay alive and run and hack at them", magics too inefficient against the four targets.

Um...read the thread title...that's what I'm doing...and the mobs are the same, whether you're cleaning it out for him or Azura.

Neither...it's inside Azura's Star...there is no room to strafe. You're facing 3 fireball tossing daedra and one human caster.

I used the Staff of Magus in one hand and healing in the other, it wore all of them out eventually.

If you don't have Enchanted clothes/armor then use the corresponding Resist potions.

They don't stack. and -20% of one-shot kill is still a 2-shot kill, and with 3 of them tossing fireballs, 2 hits doesn't take long.

What level are you? I've done this several times at level 5-7 and one flame atronach usually takes out all three dremoras.

ive been to that fort, its the half sunken one? theres plenty of room in first hall. Went there as a level 2 and there where a bunch of necromancers. But anyway, think its time to go do azura then, always in for a challenge. Took the quest several times, but never gotten around doing it as i dont usually enchant, easy enough without them, so dont see the point of yet another soulgem, theyre everywhere.

he's past that, and in the Star itself.

OP- Ward in one hand, Ice Spike in the other. Use anything you have that'll increase your magicka pool.

You have done that at level 5-7? O.o I died horribly several times when I first tried it, around level 20 or 25. The Dremoras die actually pretty easy, the trick is to dodge their fireballs. Summon something, Sanguine or Atronachs, get them distracted so the fireball doesn't hit YOU. Then charge them or take them out with a long range attack (bow in my case).

Then sneak down to take out the wizard guy.

Now, I leave that quest for last. I just did it with a level 50 Assassin. Snipe, snipe, snipe, snipe, all dead LOL

I think this might be one of those quests that's easier at a low level and I always want the Star ASAP so that's when I do it.

As a non-spellcaster who did this around level 11, I had to basically pursue the main guy and ignore the Dremora entirely. Just sprint in and go for the quick as possible kill of the head baddie. He actually goes down fairly quickly and is relatively easy to pin.

I've seen a friend with conjuration use the same tactic, but she took a moment to summon something to draw a little bit of fire.

Don't have ice spike, and even with the "recharges mana pool when hit" perk, Ward lasts a grand total of 5 seconds before mana is completely drained, thus rendering any attack spell useless, and goes down when the first spell hits it anyway. Tried using the staff you get from Sarthaal...still a no-go. A fire Atronoch distracts them for long enough for a couple shots, but it goes down too fast to keep the Daedra off me long enough to kill one. And since it's Azura's star, there's no retreat-reload possible.

Tip for Wards, only call them up when you see the spell being cast at you, then once its hit drop the ward to help with recharging your magicka.

Dont keep the ward up for any period of time.

Get some resist fire armor/clothes before heading in there would be another tip.

Sanguine rose helps as it calls a daedra of your own.

How about when you see 3 fireballs incoming, and the ward takes longer than their transit time to come up, and will only protect you from one of them anyway?

Don't have enchanting up at all yet, and haven't found any fire resist gear yet anyway.

There is some room to strafe - the area where you come in is at a right angle to the main hall

Unfortunately, the only guaranteed source of a fire resist item I know of is to run a few more College quests to get to Labryntian for the helmet...that'll give me time to pump Enchanting I suppose...I'd been hoping to use the Star to do that, but it looks like unless I get a lucky random drop or one of the stores spawns a fire resist item, I'm stuck.

If you don’t have the ‘Become Ethereal’ shout, then use a bow. You can step to your left for cover at the start and let them come to you. I don’t think they come any closer than that first turn to the left. Of course it’s been a while so I may be wrong.

I did it at level 12-14 and it wasn't too hard. I tried blasting away with fire bolt/sparks and died. Then I used two staffs, the one that does 25 damage and twice that magic damage and a fire staff. Killed the Dremoras and the wizard. Just enough charges on the staffs.

This is exactly what I did. It carries the Chain Lightning type of spell. So if one doesn't have that, then cast Chain Lightning and have a bunch of Restore Magica potions on hand to keep it going. Outside of that, I don't know, That's the only way I've done it.
