Blocking with a weapon.

Is it even worth the trouble / perks? Why not just perk restoration and heal yourself up when needed? It doesn't seem to block much damage at all :/.

Not really its easier to dodge attacks then to block and take damage.

I find bashing with a shield works better than blocking with it.

I took a couple of Block Perks with my 2-hand Warrior. But I almost never blocked. My experience is the same as Top Killa, I found it was easier to dodge. Or run away. ;)

Blocking works wonders.

EDIT: I mean blocking with a shield works wonders. Not sure about blocking with a two-handed weapon.

2 of my 4 characters I've played substantially have been rogue types, and both have used one-handed weapons with nothing in the left hand. Partly that was for RP purposes (didn't want to dual-wield or use shield or spell), but it was also handy for the occasional blocking.

I did find that I was bashing a lot more, though... I wouldn't just sit there and block and wait for the hit, but I'd bash to interrupt an attack, then counterattack.

I never perked out block with those characters, but I still found the bashing to be effective. Of course, if those characters were getting into lots of fights I had done something wrong to begin with.

For lighter characters, it's better to dodge/run away. But that doesn't stop me from taking 4-5 restoration perks

I do it to be a nerd every once in a while.

Speaking of blocking by means other than a shield, why can't we just make an 'x' with dual weilding weapons to block? Or hell, block like we do with a one-handed weapon while also having a spell in the other?

Because of how input mechanics work and the limitations consoles have. You would need to use another key, which you are already low on given the minimal amount of buttons available for a gamepad - whereas my mouse has who knows how many buttons plus every key on my keyboard combined with ALT+keys and CTRL+keys...

Well, I think the idea is to make there be a downside to dual-wielding. If you got to dish out double damage with no defensive penalty, it would make shields nigh-useless.

Once you vet to 3/5 in blockig it starts to get effective. But it's just as much about strategy. Bash when they wind up for a big one always works though. And remember the longer you hold down block the less effective it is.

Shield bashing. Totally.

I personally never block with my weapon, but that's more about my own inexperience than anything else. I just find it easier and more effective to block and bash with my shield and then while they are staggering I hack them to bits with my suped-up war axe! I love one-handed axes!!

Agreed. Getting the rhythm of the fight down is crucial.

I've seen somebody else say this as well, but how do we know it for sure?

Yeah, I use a Skyforge Steel war axe exclusively.

Yeah, I use a Skyforge Steel war axe exclusively.

Is that because of preference and reverence of the skyforge? What is the upper limit on damage possible with the Skyforge steel waraxe? I have the Skyforge steel waraxe sitting in a drawer in Whiterun and I've been thinking of pulling it out and crafting it up. I use various war axes but right now I am partial to my Flawless Ebony Waraxe of Burning.

A perfectly timed block with two handed weapon seems to result in a parry. Metal on metal sound and the npc staggering back. It's hard but it happens.

I dunno
I mean I never block, never see the point in it. Just kill em and get it done. And lots of health potions.

My Nord Warrior thinks differently. He's fairly good at killing with a shield.

It's just because it fits the character and looks good. At the same level of improvement, an ebony war axe is only marginally better than Skyforge Steel.

But I believe I've seen the same thing even when they aren't nearly simultaneous. I'll have to try it out.

I play a really light warrior, so I'm usually blocking with nothing more than my Blades Sword. It's harder to do, but just as effective a shield in most cases, baring ranged attacks and the various shield perks. Besides, if the !@$% really hits the fan, I'm usually quick enough to just sidestep the attack. :toughninja:

I don't understand playing like this. Just spamming attacks, boring.

It works and is better than being hit. Ofcourse it will never be as effective as blocking with a shield.
