Blogs on personal page?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:02 am

So... I migrated back here from the ME3 Fora. And whilst I really found the fecal blizzard there to be a massive nuisance, their msb system does have a nice upside. Blogs.

I found the personal blog to be a very interesting tool to write all sorts of stuff (and crap) and generate discussion. So... My question for the rest of the community and the admins here is:

Would it be possible to implement a similar blog "feature" using this messageboard?

Something like this would likely increase the amount of material we'd need to moderate, and I suspect the extra work wouldn't outweigh the benefits of this feature. I actually believe IPB did add blogging functionality, or something similar. However I don't know the extent of this feature, and I'm also not sure if the report function is fully integrated with it. This last bit is key - if blog posts and replies can't be reported I don't think the feature would even be up for consideration.

Yeah like HD said, that wouldn't really work since this forum actually follows the rules it has. If it can't be moderated or if it would take a lot of effort and manpower to moderate it then it's not going to be added to the forum.

IPB does have a reasonably functional blogging system and it seems that the standard report system is fully integrated into it. But it's just a headache since comments, trackbacks and so on are pretty heavily targeted by spammers, and disabling them altogether would probably be too limiting in terms of usefulness.

I have the same opinion of this as I do with chatrooms and shout boxes.

It defeats the purpose of having a forum. I like it that there is nothing here to take away general discussion on the forums..

Snip.

Hey there, Farb. Blogs would be a ton a work for the mods. They already have a hard time policing our 'about me' pages.

What would you blog about anyway? Most topics could be made into a thread, no?

Oh, I was just suggesting it's an indispensable subject for any blogger. I'm too disorganised to maintain anything approaching a proper blog, which shouldn't be surprising considering my sporadic attempts to keep a diary usually only last a few days before I get fed up. Not that I'm suggesting it's reasonable to get fed up with the subject of cheese, of course.

I had some Munster Lisbeth a while back which wasn't really as smelly as is sometimes claimed. What was really smelly was some blue brie which I forgot about. Although I like smelly cheese, that one wasn't such a delight for the nose.

Chat box is the one thing I really wish we had on here and I know it'll never happen. Chat boxes would allow complete freedom to just lazily chat which isn't allowed on here, not even in the Lurker's Lair section.

It might be possible for it to work within the structure of this forum if it was made so only approved users could use it... but I doubt it'll ever get cleared.

The Shoutbox feature (not sure if this is the same thing) is reputedly quite a resource hog, so that might be another reason they'd be less than enthusiastic about it.

Which type of cheese?

A wrong answer will make me launch stinky cheese in your face.

I don't get personal blogs. What do you post on them? Most of them that I've read seem to say things like: 'I had a mediocre sandwhich today, and my UPS delivery was late'

I don't find that at all captivating, but maybe others don't mind it. Ah well.

If I pay for the upgrade from the P5 CPU the forums currently run on, do you think they'll go for it? An original Intel Core will be a nice upgrade from that :P

Just because it's a personal blog doesn't mean it has to be mundane. You can blog about all sorts of hobbies or professions and it's still a personal blog.

Don't get a personal blog and Tumblr confused.

Oh, I was quite partial to a London paramedic's blog, but it was eye opening, informative and interesting, words that fit a very small minority of blogs I've read trawling the web.

I've seen a few of your mundane blogs, but they have definitely been in the minority (outside of Tumblr), generally belonging to teenagers. Most personal blogs I come across are hobby or profession related.

Then again, I'm not considering blogs about hobbies I don't care for mundane. If I did that, then yes, a lot of them would be. Rather I just consider these blogs "not for me, but have plenty of merit in their own right"

It's certainly possible that my search mannerisms cause utter drivel to turn up.

I am occasionally curious as to what sort of hardware it actually runs on. Some people take a perverse delight in running web services on ancient hardware that was never designed for the task, which is something I thoroughly approve of! Except when it becomes unbearably slow.

Phew! And I should ban myself from eating Edam: not very smelly but I tend to graze on it until there's none left. Which is almost the case with the 600g lump I bought a few days ago.

-Oy, SS. Long time, no "see" :).

Sure. But I prefer people to seek out what I write. Arrogance perhaps. And then I dont clutter up the forums. The reason I asked is because I felt like giving my shot at a European timeline for the FO universe. So I did. I wrote http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1369645-european-fo-timeline/page__p__20685017#entry20685017but Its likely going to get lost on the standard pages sooner or later. If I have it on a personal Blog, I dont really clutter up anything and I cause no ruffled feathers... well hopefully. I am no stranger to controversy, here or other places but I generally do try to be nice. So If I got told to delete or "rephrase" something I would.

I just think It might take some "heat" off the forums. Not that the Bethesda forums really need that.... The Bioware forums however need all the help they can get. :D.

-Okidoki. I undestand that and I accept that.

Personally I dont think it would add that much moderation as some of the "ranting" would be confined to blogs instead of spamming up the boards. But thats my subjective opinion and ofcourse respect and abide by the rules here. Just "airing an idea".

Thanks for your reply.
