Blood Mage archetype?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:46 am

I've been wanting to make a Blood Mage ever since finding the spell Equilibrium, it seems like it would be a lot of fun to roleplay. Although, I'm having a bit of trouble in creating a build.

Has anyone has rolled as one? If so, please share.

I assume vampirism would be essential for the drain spell. Some necromancy too I assume. Not too much for a blood mage I'm afraid.
If anyone has more to contribute I'd be interested in this build as well.

You can't use your health to cast spell, but you can change your health to mana. I guess it's close enough.

Yes, Equilibrium is close enough.

Interesting concept. I enjoy the whole idea of Blood Mage from those OTHER devs, but how would you implement it properly?

You would need to raise your HP in lieu of Mag obviously, but still you would need a large enough Mag Pool to cast the spell in the first place. Then it would just be like...cast Des spell - cast Equib - repeat.

Yes, possibly alternate your level up choices from health>magicka>health>magicka as you said, but of course perks and magical trinkets can help tremendously.

The trouble is, I can't decide on the skills and whatnot.

Starting as a High Elf will start you to a 150 pool. Not sure what your highest spell cost would be. That would depend on your school selection. Pending on your Enchanting skill, you could get the cost down, and dump everything into Health.

Well my current mage is basically all health. With magic enchantments, and the atronach stone you have enough magic to cast basically any spell you need.

Yeah, High Elf's starting attributes would help, but I was leaning towards a Breton.

Still not sure on stats/skills/perks...

Blood Mages have been in quite a few RPG's, but I'm referring to something else and definitely not WoW. :yuck:

The staff of magnus would also be nice, absorbs magic then health from enemies. That and a weapon that absorbs magic or health.

Exactly the staff I was going to use.

Also, he won't use any other weapons but staves.

That's quite an interesting idea.

Altmer with the Atronach stone should be good enough for your magic pool (+enchantments, if necessary) this way you can focus solely on health. Vampirism for the drain spell seems like a good idea, too, as well as necromancy.

If you find yourself with good enough enchantments, I'd say use the Ritual stone. Underappreciated, I'm sure, but it's got to come in handy for someone like you.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes :D

Playing as a Vamp would be cool. I can see one standing on a rock, casting Drain life on the enemy and Equib at the same time.

EDIT : Yes the Ritual Stone would be good. That way you could raise something, then drain it.

EDIt 2 : That might not work after all. Because you will be using Mag to cast the Drain Life spell.

There's no need for magicka if you lower if with enchanting anyway...

DnD Blood Mages are basically mages into scarification.

Okay, so far I'm thinking Altmer/Breton with the Atronach stone. The whole vampire drain life thing sounds amazing, and definitely seems fun, never played a vampire though.

Does this power come with the first stage of vampirism?

Still needing help with the skills/perks.

Yes but it is very low. Only 2 Hps per sec. At stage 4 it is 5 per sec.

I am on my second playthrough as a S4V only. This time I contracted the disease as soon as possible. It calls for an absolute master of Illusion to be effective.

EDIT : That is if you want to do any major quests or join a faction. Being a Vamp ads +25% to Illusion skills, so dual casting calm, with the right perks will effect most anything in the game except Dragons and if something is Immune. ( like Dragons )

If you do, and choose to go Stage 4, I recommend either power-leveling Illusion ASAP or sorting your gear needs out first, as you'll be using Calm a lot unless you decide to chuck doing quests out the window.

Alright, I'll see to that.

Also, I was thinking and Restoration may be thrown out of the mix. Good idea?

No, you want a high Restoration skill for the Necromage perk, as being a Vampire means you get tagged as Undead and thus get the bonus to effects. ALL effects, mind you, which makes for some really strong self-made items as well as increased spell efficacy.

Okay, bringing this back up because I created the character and now I'm putting perk points in the perk calculator, but I have a question.

Should he use Alteration? The Alteration perks look useless, so if so please specify which perks to use.
