Blood on the Ice..

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 5:11 am

Hey y'all, has anyone else had a problem with this mission on Xbox 360? It tells me to speak to the Jarl's assistant (Jorleif I believe) and he doesn't help me and I've gathered all the evidence. It won't ever show the killer at night anywhere trying to murder someone else and he's in that house that you investigated earlier and he won't die. I have the guide and have followed all the steps and it's just not working. Kind of irritating me. Anyone have any say in this?

I've read several threads about that quest being bugged.

Have you tried Skyrim Cheats, Hints, and Spoilers forum, you might get a quicker answer there, or even search for it.

Good luck.

I was going to post a bunch of stuff, but the spoiler tag doesn't seem to be working at the moment.

Anyway, 'get help' doesn't update. Don't worry, just carry on with the rest. You may have to wait a while, for a certain place to be open, or a certain woman you spoke to before to get a new conversation topic.

If im not mistaken I think Calixto was on the list for a fix in patch 1.4 to make him killable. 1.4 should be out very soon.

EDIT: yeah i just read it on the change log. The trigger for blood on the ice and a killable calixto is on there.

Don't visit Calixto's house (nor kill him) before you find the rare "amulet" (somewhat hidden in a house) or else the amulet will not turn into the real thing. I did that and now I have a very useless amulet in inventory. When the new patch is out I re-start the game because I know what to do by now with all these broken quests.

If finding him about to commit the murder is the only/main issue: the arrow locater is actually in the wrong spot. He'll be in an area next to the area with the arrow by the White Phial shop.

This is probably one of the most bugged quests in the game and I wasn't sure if him being unkillable was the main issue or you not finding him before he commits the next murder was the issue.

Sounds similar to a couple of parts of the Thieves Guild questline.
Spoiler
I have reason to believe returning to the Ragged Flagon Cistern immediately upon completion of "Trinity Restored" breaks the quest "Blindsighted," as entering the Ragged Flagon Cistern appears to respawn Brynjolf to his "Darkness Returns" state, making it impossible to complete the questline. I've also read about a similar game-breaking glitch too where reentering the Dwemer Museum (along with a few other triggers) restarts the quest "Hard Answers," and completing it again before completing "Darkness Returns" will also break the questline.

As for "Blood on the Ice," one area I had an issue with is when if you wrongly accused Wuunferth of the crime, and then you are to speak to him in his cell, he may be standing too far inside of his cell in order to talk to him, and he will not move closer to the player. I literally had to unlock his cell and go inside in order to talk to him. :lmao:

If you have all the evidence, try going straight to Wuunferth. He'll look at the amulet and make a psychic prediction that the killer will strike the next night.
Stand outside the White Phial that evening, biggety-bam.

Doing that will still cause problems.
Mainly being the Strange Amulet remains so unless you speak to Calixto upon advice from Jorlief. If you skip this and go straight to killing Calixto, then you won't be able to loot the Necromancers Amulet.

True, yeah that's what happened to me. I sold it to him, stole it back. Still a Strange Amulet, but I could drop it from inventory. And at least speaking to Wuunferth allowed me to catch the killer... I just felt lucky to have gotten that far in the quest.

I waited all night and the killer appeared in the market early the next morning, not right in the stone quarter.

the civil war chain can interrupt this chain in a negative way... if you're on the civil war chain I'd finish first.

Well see, my quest arrow points me to that house that you investigated earlier in the quest. I've already dealt with Wuunferth and what the quest objective is telling me now to do is wait during the night for him to commit the next murder. But the arrow is at that house. I go in, he's there, attacks me, I attack back, he won't die. Kind of crazy but i'm glad it's gettin fixed.

I did that after I discovered he wasn't the real killer to free him (mainly just for the hell of it), but he stayed in there...an honest criminal I guess.

Now, I spoke to Calixto in the early stages of the quest, but kept the Strange Amulet (still in my inventory as such ), but I was able to complete the quest. So, did I luck out or keeping it just means I can't get the Necromancer's Amulet (not really a problem on my 1st character)?

You're stuck with it, I'm afraid. And being a quest item, unless you're on the PC, you'll have to look at it's pretty features from the inventory.

Oh, I know I'm stuck with it. :banghead:  I was just asking if I got lucky that the quest didn't bug or is not talking to Calixto at all what bugs the quest out. :P

Not selling him the Strange Amulet for 500 septims bugs it and stops it ever becoming the Necromancer Amulet. Not the worst of bugs but unfair this quest is completable without getting the amulet (the only real reward offered.)
I managed to complete this quest by finding 1 of the 2 journals, skipping the amulet discovery entirely and accusing Wuunferth. Confused the hell out of me when Jorlief brought up an 'amulet' as evidence - the one I didn't find lol.
