I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already or if I'm just missing but why cant we craft bolts. You might be able to craft 'em later (im only on 2nd mission of dawnguard :/) but i use the crossbow quite a bit, and will be making a character who will just use the crossbow and i must admit I'm finding the bolts pretty rare

the bolts can be bought from Fort dawnguard..since dawnguard are the only C-bow users hehe...I bought 140+ in one go yesterday haha..i dont need to craft them when i can buy this much haha

You can craft bolts, you just have to do a quest or two. And only steel bolts at first.
Then dwarven once you get the dwarven crossbow.
As well as some specialty bolts, should you track down the schematics.

This, plus I believe you can only craft them at Gunnar's forge in the fort (not certain about the basic ones but this is true for the exploding ones).

You can only craft bolts after youve finished a specific quest later on in the DLC, and if you chose to be a vampire Lord you can NEVER be able to craft bolts, though you can still use a crossbow and bolts if you find them.

You can become vamp lord on dawnguard side too.

Im pretty sure that if you become a vampire lord, then you are doing the vampire half of Dawnguard. Now there is one point before you go into the Soul Cairn where you can become just a vampire...but not a lord, and you can cure that when you leave the Soul Cairn....

When?

At the end of the Dawnguard side of the questline. When I heard that coupled with the fact that vamps don't get to craft crossbows I got pretty pissed. What's the point of joining the vampires? They don't even block out the sun.

Well my guess is that if you ever become a vampire lord, you can't craft bolts, at least thats what everyone else has said....and thanks for spoiling the end for everyone, me included......

As far as I've seen you're right, only Gunnar's forge gives me the option to craft them.

Sorry I'm new and I couldn't firgure out how to do the spoiler thing so *SPOLER* (and I tried to gray out the spoiler at the bottom of my response as much as i could. If someone could tell me how to do the spoler thing it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You actually do get the ability to block out the sun for a period of time.

I've found a TON ... well not ton but over 100 just from one Dwemer ruin.

Dwemer bolts, not steel.
