Bonfire night /Guy Fawks night/fireworks night/the gunpowder

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:34 pm

How is it now a controversial holiday? It is about religious and political terrorism. I have no idea how the British think about it , but celebrating an attempt or failure of the guy just sounds ludicrous to me.

One could use the same argument against US independence. It's been a nationally celebrated event for centuries, it's hardly controversial in terms of contemporary politics.

Doing a historical renenactment of trying to blow up Parliament.

You know for historical reasons.....not because I like blowing stuff up. Even though Guy Fawkes failed by sending letters to all Catholic members....... it still be a "what if" question answered.

No?

Ok.....

I'm from America so... we don't celebrate Nov. 5th I think.
I'll be wearing a Guy Fawks mask, and screaming at the PO-LICE... js.

well the night the plot was foiled the king ordered bonfires lit in celebration of the plots unravelling hence how the night came about in celebration that the terrorists failed

I don't think discussing a religious/political holiday about terrorism in this forum is good idea in general.

I don't think anybody asked for your input on that. Thanks for trying to be forum daddy though.

I dunno, normally my mate puts on a party and I go to that, but he's in Yankania right now so idk. My village is too small to have a display of its own, so I'll probably hop round to another village and watch their one, preferably avoiding the village that's full of cretins.

You haven't done much to challenge my established ideas about Norfolk.

All stereotypes have some truth in them.

Okay, here's a crash course in Broadland Village politics (or at least the bit east of Naaarwich, south of the A47 and north of the river Yare):

I read a story a few days ago about a train crash in Norfolk caused by a farmer parking his tractor on the railway line while he faffed about unlocking the gate. Unsurprisingly, the train hit it since it's tricky for them to swerve out of the way. The only surprising thing was that it found its way into the news: it's a regular occurrence, apparently.

Wow, you're just a whole barrel of fun, aren't you? Might as well say we shouldn't discuss what we'll be doing at Christmas, which features all 3 of your no-no's there. Or maybe you could research what you're putting down before writing comments.

I've only been to organised ones, although a small one to toast marshmallows or something sounds nice. Here's the bonfire I normally go to:

My family used to celebrate it but then we got our dog and well the two don't mix.
So most years we stay in with the music/TV up loud, the curtins and windows shut, Its also the one night I can play with the drums without needing to contain myself and this is all so the dog doesn't get upset by the noises...still does though.

Doesn't help that the chinese people have a garden joined to us and they celebrate every event with fireworks, Bonfire night, chinese new year, The New Year and some other ones I forget at this time.

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...

We had a joint Bonfire night/Halloween night at the theme park I work at the other day. It was pretty fun, since we all got to close the rides during the fireworks and just watch.
