Boone - best of both worlds ?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 7:23 am

Boone AKA " Kill Theif " i find so far is best with Metal Armor, Reinforced and the Paladin Toaster. i dont think you can do anything to his rifle or even pick it up when he dies, But with the Toaster and his Sniper rifle and his armor hes ready to go i dont even worry about him i just do my thing and he does his and we meet up after a fast travel. If you have teamed up with boone what was your favorite armor/melee combo ?

Occasionally i will accidently hit someone i dont wanna and they'll turn red and boone will go into vendetta mode causing me to reload which svcks, still number 2 in the svck list, number 1 is the occasionally brand new system freeze be assured its not your babies(console, tower) fault its the game trying to give you to much and your system has a brain fart.

Plus my boone is in ranged mode and defensive but still prefers his paladin toaster i took it away from him once and he wouldn't cover me properly and always took the kill hit from me, finally i said fine you big cry baby have your toaster back !, some sniper you turned out to be. This is me playing fallout, "hey were did that raider come from and why is he running straight at my enemies ?, boy he's tough, WAIT! that's boone dammit (pull out shotgun) gotta go back him up in his fist fight". but boone is a sniper at the times when it counts so i keep him around.

Boone just loves the All-American. He said it was out of ammo in the middle of a fight the other day and he switched to a Sniper rifle we found for him. I know he has his own rifle stashed somewhere though. I'll often see him wearing the Power Fist and that's what he used on the Chairmen at The Tops. It seems to be a favorite. He's on ranged all the time but he'll still use that Power Fist when he wants to. He keeps switching between the Combat Armor and his 1st Recon Survival Armor.

I've had Boone with me the entire game, along with ED-E, and it's been great. If I overload him, he gets mad and says he won't be able to cover me if he can't move his legs. I like having him cover me......

Boone is alright for the perk if your blind as a bat. Still he's not exactly up to Cass's, or Raul's, level in both combat ability and dialog.

Boone and ED-E are my compainons of choice.
I am on the my second time through and they have the best perks.
Also, i no longer give Boone any extra weapons, I let him use his own since he gets infinite ammo.

Boones perk is always usable. Even with a ton of whiskey, which eventually runs out, that perk isnt always available.

Veronica is pretty much the single best companion for melee combat. Plus she can wear any kind of Power Armor.

And I loved his story...very compelling. I was thinking I should try other companions on the next game and may try Veronica with Rex and use them in the closed spaces like Vaults and the sewers I never visited. I've never done their backstories and want to try those. I've read good things about them both and will try to use them right. I won't promise I don't go back to Boone and ED-E though. :) I agree about the weapons, we'll see how that goes. I do spend a lot of time and caps getting him bullets. I use energy weapons though so I'm not using them; he can have them all to save my rear. :)

I have no problem seeing a target at night without his perk...at maximum render distance on PC. Everything moves around out there like hyperactive children and that movement is easy to spot.

I like Cass because she is exactly what I need. CQB specialist when armed with a Riot Shotgun+Slugs. Anything that wanders too close gets a storm of 12 Gauge Slugs sent it's direction. Raul can do the same thing minus the 100 sneak.

Arcade has been the big surprise for me. I thought he would be completely hopeless, but that's not the case. His default weapon seems good enough and he can make use of a Gauss Rifle better than Veronica at least. His perk can be useful to those that catch every bullet fired in their general direction....twice.

After trying out all the game's companions It was nearly a coin flip between Cass and Lilly. Cass is a no-brainer of course. Lily for the +10% Sneak Attack damage that's a big deal when firing a Ranger Sequoia loaded with HP ammo, or similar weapon that's able to roll huge damage numbers on a sneak attack. I ended up playing it safe and rehiring Cass, she'll take me to the end of the game no problem.

Boone's Perk only help early when I was relying on Ratslayer, the "night scope" actually make it harder to see at night......anyways because of his "shoot first, talk later" attitude I tend to keep him at Novac.....

Arcade come with the best default equipment, but his health is just slightly higher than ED-D

Veronica can't shoot, period.

Cass would have been THE BEST if her skill is calculated correctly for once...right now with 2 of my characters her skill is still on 39 despite I start "Headache by the Number" at level 20.

Every companion has 100 skill in the weapon you're likely to give them..how exactly does their combat prowess differ? Do they have other code to make them better or worse? Or are people just basing judgements off anecdotal evidence?

Cass get 15% guns damage so technically she would be the highest DPS companion. Unless she doesn't wear Boone's hat. If she doesn't wear Boone's hat, then the 25% crit advantage for Boone puts him on par.

Anyways to answer the OP, I enjoyed Boone with Remnant Armor, Sniper rifle, and Oh Baby! Honorable mention All-American, but the Sniper Rifle simply puts out more damage.

The companions are currently somewhat bugged skills wise because of script errors. JE Sawyer made a post about it a while back. Some of them generate with skill levels lower than they should, and Boone generates with 100 in guns no matter what level he is/you are when you recruit him. At least that's how I understood it. Thus at least in the early game, when you're still lowish level trying to kill bandits, Boone is more overpowered than he was intended, and the others are somewhat weaker than intended. By the end, tho, it balances out between them. Beyond the issue that some companions do have different highest skills and stats, I think most people's preferences are based on first impression and whether you like their "personality" or not. :)

I only found Boone weak in melee early on. Once you put combat armor on him and give him Pushy or something else high level, his survivability/viability in melee was just fine, even against Deathclaws. Unless major mobbed, of course. By late game I find his default rifle a little weak, so I just load him up with ammo and two weapon options...so if one gets broken mid-fight (rare), he'll automatically switch to the 2nd one. Works out well.

I give Boone metal armor, Shishkabob, .44.

I was mad at first when he would still my karma but I would laugh till I cry when he runs off to battle with the flaming sword. I loved how he would decapitate someone and say " Guess they got away"

That's three worlds, actually.

Melee, ranged and armour. One, two and three.

"Both" means "two". ;)

I have found that Boone loves the All American. He even picked it up off of the floor when we went into the vault 34 armory. It is his weapon of choice. I give him the sniper rifle and he uses it sometimes but most of the time, he equips the All American. The one thing that annoys me about Boone is that when I am sniping, he comes right up on me to see what I am shooting at (even when he has a standing order to keep back), then I sometimes shoot his weapon and destroy it. When you find that Boone no longer has the weapon you gave him to use, it is because he got in your way and you shot it so he threw it on the ground. If you hear him say "I can't use that weapon anymore" look around for a broken weapon on the ground or load a last save. Another weapon Boone is good with is the YCS/186 Gaus Rifle. Try that for fun.

You take Boone or Veronica and Rex for the damage, IMHO, you take ED-E and either Cassidy or Raul for the perks.

I found Raul's perk to be mostly pointless, I never lacked for caps and caps = weapon condition pretty much once you've found a decent repair NPC. No dungeons in FO:NV are long enough your weapon will degrade in the course of one solid run front-to-back, UNLIKE FO3. Honestly Cassidy's perk was okay, it was nice to always have some bonus stat fuel on me. ED-E's perk is easily the best in the game, just because it saves you SO much frustration. Learning a few basic patterns can save your bacon: Like fast-moving groups of red dots anywhere near anything that looks like a mountain, cazidore city.
