Boone = SuperSniper?

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 3:35 pm

When you look at Boone's and Raul's stats, it shows that Boone's GUNS skill is 48. Raul's GUNS skill is 92. I don't understand how this could be when Boone's class is SuperSniper. His default weapon is his Scoped Hunting Rifle and the skill requirement for that is 50. How is it possible that an NCR Miltary Sniper after serving his stint, wouldn't be qualified to use his weapon? Am I not understanding what these numbers mean? Could someone help me understand? Does this contribute to Boone being broken?

And does anyone know how I can get this patch off of my game? I crashed 7 times last night before I gave up...it was better before.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the companions scale to the level of the player so the stats you're seeing are probably for level 1 characters - and if you encounter Boone at any higher level he'll likely have a higher Guns skill.

I gave him the AER14 Unique Laser Rifle and he steals my kills like 70% of the time. So you see, even an energy weapon makes him godly.

Hungry Donner, thank you. I don't know about that. I only looked at the numbers through the GECK so I don't think that has anything to do with my level, does it? Boone's Guns number was 48 and Raul's number was 92 and I looked at them at the same time. The game is new; my knowledge of it is new and hopefully growing. Boone's fighting has changed so much and he's not the sniper he was. He keeps grabbing his melee weapon when set on Ranged. I don't know why it was changed since it was so good before. I'm really trying to keep this General so it can be here. Maybe he keeps holstering his weapon because he's not qualified to use it?

Hmm.... I guess it varies for everyone. Strange that the game is like that, makes it special in a way. The Boone in my games is a rather mighty and with the new 1.02 ED-E they seem to do all the work for me.

That's the exact opposite of how things were when I used him. For me, my enemies were all too often dead before I even had a chance to hit them when Boone was in my party.

As for Boone having a lower skill in the G.E.C.K. than Raul, I don't know, because I'm not too familiar with how level scaling works for companions, though if they have minimum levels, which I don't know if they do or not, maybe Raul's is higher than Boone's, since you're likely to be able to get him later than Boone, and maybe the G.E.C.K. only shows their skills at their lowest possible level, I don't really no how it works though so I'm really just guessing. Or maybe the latest patch weakened Boone somewhat because he WAS kind of overpowered before, but if in the proccess of toning him down they made it so that someone who is supposed to be as skilled of a sniper as Boone is supposed to be cannot even properly handle his own gun, then I'd say they went a little overboard.

I hate Boone.
We are in the middle of a firefight with the Legion, and the NCR troops just had to run in the way. He ended up killing all of them, from an accidental shot, costing me him as a companion, and my NCR rep.

Was this after the patch? Because Boone has been messed up since the patch.

When you look at Boone's and Raul's stats, it shows that Boone's GUNS skill is 48. Raul's GUNS skill is 92.

I believe Raul is set to be a minimum level that is higher than Boone. The numbers the GECK shows is the starting skill for their lowest possible calculated level. So Boone can be lvl5 when you first get him, and his guns will be 48. But Raul is supposed to be at least lvl12 when you get him (cause he's harder to get), so his skill is higher.

I could be wrong, tho...I just woke up.

Edit:I checked ... in version 1.1 at least, Raul is supposed to start out at clvl14. I'm not sure about in 1.2, maybe they lowered it a bit.

Boone's hat and merc outfit are what make him so good. If I go to the console, click Boone and do a
GetAV Critchance
right now it's 26 for my Boone. 26 Percent. It goes up by 5 (from the hat) every time I access his inventory. It's a well known bug (I guess not well enough) and I'm surprised that they still give followers armor and weapons with enchantments. I'm not sure if that number translates directly to one in four bullets making a critical hit, but it can't be good, as I see that value for the player rarely goes above 6 or so.

Another thing that I think is a problem is that both melee and guns skills are equal, and it seems like there are problems sometimes when there is a decision as to which weapon to pick. There are times when the machete is equipped even when told to use Ranged weapons. If he's a sniper, I would think guns would be favored, so for my Boone i've done a
ModAV guns 20
on him. So starting out I'm at level 2 or so and Boone's values are 48 and 68. Plus with the Merc outfit adding +2 for both guns and melee everytime I access his inventory ;)

Edit: When I do the modAV guns on him, he puts away that machete.

Boone's melee & guns values have always been equal, and he did not act terribly buggy about switching back and forth before patch 1.2 I mean, he would pull out his knife, but then switch back to his gun 3 seconds later (without charging in to melee combat first), but it was no worse than the other companions, who would also do this quite frequently. The incidence where Boone (or others) would actually get stuck in using a combat mode I didn't set them for was fairly rare.

I know some people have a big problem with companions choosing the wrong combat style, but I never did. So I'm just saying I don't think his two skills being equal is a specific cause of that behavior. There may be something else that combines with it that is a problem, tho.

The really annoying thing about Boone is that he won't carry Legion armor. He wants to kill them but he expects me to carry his loot? What am I, his squire?

Why do you carry around legion armor?
It's item weight/value ratio is not very profitable.

Because in the early game, anything that sells for caps is good.

It is most likely there are a couple of factors at work here.

I am not too familiar with the GECK but it is probable that you are viewing the Base Skill Stat. In game you can go into Console Mode and target the NPC. enter: getav and get the current value.

According to the Wiki Those are the base levels for the respective NPCs (48 & 92). Probably because (if you follow the MQ storyline) you encounter Raul much later in the game. They both will scale with you.

As others have said, it appears they diddled with Boon in the latest patch. He has less of a tenancy to run off after enemies, he's even more taciturn and he is displaying some AI glitches.

If you repair a bunch of the legion armor on the go it makes the looting worth it. Sometimes I have 4-5 fully repaired pieces of armor after fighting legion

RickerHK: I took the machete away from him in the GECK but he still keeps holstering his weapon during a battle. Thanks for those commands...that was a blast to watch those numbers go up. :)

Edoard: I am trying to learn the GECK and it's fascinating. It's like Lady Crimson said too about the levels. Boone and all the companions have a MIN and MAX level and Boone's starts at 5 and Raul's at 14 so he would be stronger but 92 for Guns and only 48 for the Sniper?! It just seems like Boone has been damaged by the latest fix. I can deal with a sniper who isn't god-like but it's the No Headtracking that is really hurting my games. The Developers work hard to make the NPCs seem alive and real to us...even having them blink and making it look like they are breathing and for Boone to just stare ahead like a Zombie now is awful. Original Boone was much better...so glad to have known him. :( I hope that he will be fixed along with the other problems we're all trying to deal with in another patch. I crash all the time now too. Cheers for the holidays.

I've posted a bug fix for Boone's combat and head tracking on the Nexus. It was his dialog quest script performing an evp on him every five seconds.

Oh, this is awesome. Thank you soooo much for putting the time & effort into figuring out what was wrong.

The one last thing for me try for (non-Boone) related patch issues I'm having is to uninstall/re-download the game from Steam (again...), to check if the updater maybe corrupted anything. I don't think it's tooo likely but never know.
This should inspire me to have the energy to actually do that, so I can see if your Boone fix works for me. Thanks again!

Game reinstalled, your new fix mod in there along with the few self-made and dance/multi companion mods I use. Loaded up recent savegame...Boone's all better now. Plus the Nipton glitches I was having seem to not be there this time. Maybe the reinstall did do something. I'll have to play longer to see if anything else I noticed crops up or if they're gone too.

I'm so happy all around. Big hugs, thanks again.
