It looks absolutely hideous. Is there any way to make this place look better? There is nothing in it...

You can buy stuff for it--go back and talk to the guy you bought it off.

Buy the upgrades and if you still don't like it spend ~36k for fully upgraded Proudspire Manor.

i could care less what it looked like, it was cheap lol. in these types of games, (oblivion, fallout) i find it hard to get gold or money. i know i can sell a bunch of crap, but 5000 gold for a house was good enough for me. its just a place i can go to, to store things when i have extra

You can buy decorations from the steward, such as an alchemy lab, kitchen, bedroom, etc. You can also buy other houses in different cities.

Kind of like when you buy an actual house, you have to buy furniture separately.

Go back to the guy who sold it to you, as others have said, and you can buy furniture packages.

Just don't store stuff in any containers when you buy new upgrades - they may disappear.

I'm pretty sure the chest next to the bed is safe.

And to the OP, I think a full upgrade of Breezehome is an additional 2.5k

I disagree, with mild gameplay I find the method of commerce (caps, $$ money, gold etc...) in any of these type of games is easily attainable.

Yes, I think the chest remains - a lot of the barrels get removed, though, with anything in them.

I got to ask, how did you not hear or read the Jarl's Aide when he explicitly told you you could upgrade them and gave you a book explaining the details of the upgrades?

I tried talking to him and I didn't see any options to buy additional stuff. This is the same guy I bought the house from. The bald guy in Whiterun.

When you bought the house. Right after you get the key.

by playing the game? LOL Or in my case, its due to enchanting. Enchanting cheap stuff like daggers with paralyze or stamina damage gives a good load of money, even for petty soul gems.

Loot all the high end pieces from every dungeon crawl you do and sell them in town. That's how I got mine. Alchemy is another way. Some potions sell for quite a bit of money and the mats are pretty easy to pick up as you travel about. And if you want to know how to get the loot back to town, get a horse. Once the dungeon is cleared ride the horse back there or fast travel, which ever suits your play style. Walk through the dungeon and pick up everything you want to sell. Once you're overburdened it's a slow walk but you only have to do it once this way. If you have the windsprint shout you can use that to speed up the process. Once back outside get on the horse and you can ride at full speed or fast travel even though you are overburdened. Get back to town and sell everything. Whiterun is great if you fast travel because there are 3 vendors right inside the gate where you appear that will purchase armor and weapons, the girl outside, the guy inside, and the elf in the Drunken Huntsman.

Breezehome, fixed up, is actually my favorite house. It's right inside the main gate, it has tons of storage, everything is close together, and it has a very nice look to it. There's a blacksmith right outside the door. The only thing really missing for me is enchanting but I don't do that very often so I can live without it being right there. Several things bug me about Proudspire. For one they didn't put any storage areas at the enchanting and alchemy stations. Why? Donno, but it svcks. The back door will not unlock from the outside even though I have the key. it's too big and spread out for my taste. And the worst thing is that it's too far inside town requiring a fairly long run to get to it every time you teleport there, even longer if you enter at the gate. I also don't like that the mannequins won't hold weapons even though modders have had that function for a long time now on theirs. And none of the weapons display racks work correctly although that's not just limited to Proudspire. Bethesda really could stand to take a few tips from the modders where housing is concerned. The modded houses are always so much better.

He didnt give me a book.

Go up stairs there should be in a look located in the chest. If it's not there it should be laying some where around the house.

On a related note....

Where can I buy a desktop computer to put in my home? I want to play skyrim with in skyrim.... lolz...

this house is sooooo bad. since i am already in the 40s i get endless gold thrown after me and so i was like: "just buy and decorate it"

sooo bad. i prefered to stay in whiterun. bought and decorated the house in markarth, which costs something around 12-15k after completely decorating it(idk i really just buy and decorate everything directly). also much better than the one in solitude. the solitude home just feels..... heartless. whiterun home still the best for me.

I had that problem for a little while. I discovered through testing that he won't let you decorate your house if he's in certain locations. For example, he goes out on the huge balcony at the back of Dragonsreach to eat sometimes. He won't talk to you about decorating if he's there. Try him in the throne room.

Like all merchants, he will only do business from 8am - 8pm. You can wake him up at 2am and talk about grey beards, but he won't offer anything for sale.

House from Whiterun is much better than Imperial CIty's apartment. It was stinky shack! :-( Good they kept this buy your furnices-thing. Too sad after this new patch on PS3 you can't use bookshelves anymore, gotta store all those books to bags etc.

What a coincidence - I have ~36k to spend(well it's actually more like 80k by now, I stopped caring).

Where do I get the manor? I ran out of place for books in Breezehome.
