OK. There are points in the game where you need to brawl. As a mage, I know you can use pots and restoration spells during these brawls without forfeiting the fight.

How do I get back into unarmed status after using healing?

Unequip your healing spell.

Selecting an equipped spell will unequip it and leave your hand empty.

Same here. However, it's the only way to continue the quest I am on. I'm a mage already! I don't brawl. Surely, I don't have to go out get all this armor that I don't wear...to brawl? Using resto is a good thing during brawls. The only thing I can't seem to do is get back into unarmed mode.

I imagine the same way you would switch to a weapon from a spell.

I don't remember ever needed any healing during a brawl, but I had some armor skills and armor on so that may have helped.

I've only ever brawled twice, and that was becaue I didn't like the look of someone's face...I didn't need to pummel them into submission.

I would assume that you need to 'sheath' or unready your spell.

Use the left for it only.

To the others, I can't unequip it. The spell remains there. It appears to just "refresh" it.

Have you tried equipping a weapon in your resto-hand and then unequipping that? Should leave you with an empty hand.

My scrawny unarmoured Altmer healer has beaten the hell out of a whole bunch of tough armoured Nords and Orcs. Now I am in no way a good 'twitch' gamer, so I can't see why you would need to heal, unless you are on Master. Or is it harder than that, and I accidently did something right without realising?

One word: Potions.

Just enchant you some gloves with + Unarmed and beat them to shreds without healing.

Doing this during the brawl fails the quest and the guards come. However, I did this prior to the brawl to to set my right hand up in unarmed status (only way I figured out how).

Nah. I used to use potions during those fights. It takes way tooooo many of them and interrupts the flow of the fight.
