Breaking Bad Season 4

Post » Wed Jul 20, 2011 7:41 pm

So, Breaking Bad kicks off it's 4th season tomorrow night on AMC, 10PM. I'm looking forward to this program more than any of the other current offerings from HBO, Showtime, or the like. The 3rd seasons startling conclusion left many of us wondering what would come next, panting and wringing our hands with anxiety as the next season was teased to us, even delayed by several months (which unfortunately has precluded Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul and cast from any Emmy nominations this year).

Spoiler

Did Jesse really kill Gayle? (Interviews I've seen and read with Vince Gilligan would indicate that he was surprised by any of the murmuring that people thought Jesse moved the gun at the last second, so I'm thinking Gayle is indeed dead)
Will Walter be able to negotiate his survival now that he's in Gus' clutches? (A preview in a television mag mentioned a story arc through the first 3 episodes that covered Walters attempts to screw up enough courage to KILL Gus!)
Will Skylar become part of Walters deception by becoming his Danny?
Will Hank recover from his shooting enough to resume his pursuit of Heisenberg and the Blue Meth?

I can barely wait for tomorrow night, and I know I'm not alone out there.
So here's a thread to discuss televisions best crime drama, Breaking Bad, as it returns for what's bound to be a nail-biting fourth season.

Thoughts, hopes, theories?

And remember how much joy you've gotten discovering all the secrets of this show, so use those little spoiler tags to hide anything that the casual observer won't want to know.

Have you watched the rest of the series?
I don't use Netflix, so I don't know if they have any of the previous seasons.
I know you can find the dvd sets for pretty minimal costs (I've seen season 1 and 2 for as little as 10$). Plus then you get all the behind the scenes content and creator commentaries ( I love commentaries on films and television)....
I would normally wait for a series to finish so that I can watch all the episodes in a single shot, without commercials or the week off between epis... But for Breaking I'm not sure I'll be able to wait another few months for it to conclude.... I will definitely be sitting down to watch the premier Sunday night.

As for season 4 theories:
Spoiler
I think this year we see the end of Jesse. Vince has mentioned that originally the character was meant to die at the end of the first season, but decided to keep him around when there was a positive response from the public. Today I think he's a character that the show can continue without (not that I wouldn't miss him). Killing Gayle is bound to send him into a downward spiral. I can see him going back to the drugs and making some very poor desicions about either Hank or Gus in a wayward attempt to rescue Walt.

I'd definitely reccomend it.
Great production values, beautiful camera work, fantastic acting, stellar writing.... Show doesn't miss a beat. Every episode is exciting and keeps you coming back for more. I don't know what you're already watching, but I'd have a hard time putting this behind many (or any) current shows.

I'm eagerly waiting for Sunday night to see this show. I absolutely LOVED the first two seasons & thought the 3rd was pretty decent...(the plot-formula of the show can start to feel a bit old after a while)...can't wait to see what they do for the 4th.

Bryan Cranston is the awesome. Giancarlo Esposito as the druglord guy is awesome. And I love that lawyer character, so funny.

Adding in Odenkirk as Sal Goodman was a brilliant move for the series. As dark as it can be, some hilarity is needed to keep people from feeling too depressed by the content. I suspect that Walter White will be far 'blacker" this year. I'm not sure that I've heard of a possible end for the show (both Sopranos and The Wire had finite runs that were announced when the shows first aired) but if we assume a similar length to othe HBO style shows, 6 or 7 years would be about right. Unless they intend to hold back Walter-As-A-Villain for the final season, we are likely gonna start seeing some truly evil behavior from him. "Run!"

If Jesse were to be killed off, I can see him ratting on Walt in an attempt to save himself. How many times have they "broken up" in the past? Bunches. As far as I'm concerned, Jesse doesn't care about him and their friendship is a charade.

I never really liked Jesse anyway. He breathes so heavily when he talks he sounds ridiculous.

Jessie was initially interesting (and sometimes situationally funny) as a foil for Walt, but over time he's become less and less so...and definitely harder to like, for me. More and more just a whiner [censored]-bag.

Amazon is going to have http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005CKPQHA?pf_rd_p=1305938562&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=2864549011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1PN942NH03YB3335WSAD up for $1.99 each once they start airing. I've been interested in watching the show for a while, but I never got a chance to start until now. Do you think it'd be okay going into the season without watching any of the previous episodes?

I think you'd catch on pretty quickly, but I honestly wouldn't suggest it. You'd be missing so much great stuff. The general jist of the show is pretty simple: High school chemistry teacher is diagnosed with terminal cancer and makes the desicion to leave money for his family by producing the worlds purest crystal meth. If you don't want to pay for the discs (which I've seen for pretty cheaply for the first 2 seasons, about 30 for the 3rd), there's always the download options... Start watching them now and by the time you've caught up there'll be 5 or 6 episodes available from this season.

Do you have a favorite season or episode?

My favorite episode is
Spoiler
Fly, from the third season. There are a lot of people online that dislike that epi, but I think it's brilliant, from Walters obsessive behavior attempting to CONTROL the fly and contamination, to the creepy, weird ending with the blinking red light and the fly trapped inside.

I may get the discs on Netflix, but 7 discs with 1 disc at a time is going to take a while. How long is each episode?

Without the television commercials, most work out to roughly 42 minutes.

To date there are a total of 33 episodes. 13 more in season 4, season finale expected on Oct.9 this year.

Great start to the new season, last night. For once I'm enjoying Skylar, who finally seems to not just be wild-eyed and aggro about everything around her.

Spoiler
Could the return to the Gayle's death investigation at the end of the episode indicate a greater involvement of police in the season? Could Gus's glasses still contain forensic evidence around the lens' and screws? Sure he washed off after the throat slashing, but didn't pay much attention to his glasses, and blood evidence can be microscopic. Should a murder investigation of Gayle get back to Gus, could he have signed his own conviction by trying to re-assert his dominance over Walt and Jesse?
And another great moment when Jesse and Walt share their thoughts over breakfast. Walt's a genius, but continually demonstrates an inability to look further ahead. Jesse tells him, "now we're all on the same page...." "The same page how?" "The page that says, if I can't kill you I can sure make you wish you were dead." And Walt looks a little surprised. Well duh, Walter, what did you think, Gus was just gonna let things go back to normal now?
Good to see a little bit with Marie and Hank, also, but I really hope he's gonna be able to recover before the season finishes, he just hasn't been the Hank I love to watch since his shooting.

Anyone else have thoughts or predictions after watching Episode 401- Boxcutter?
Spoiler
Which I think spoiled some of the surprise of the episode, honestly. I knew right from the opening that the boxcutter Gayle was using would factor in as a murder weapon before the closing credits, simply because I knew the title.

I'm currently working my way through the second season, only a few episodes in at the moment. I really enjoyed the first season, but it seems like the second season is kind of dragging it's feet, so we will see if I actually finish the second and get through the third.

Fly was a fantastic episode! My favorite episodes are probably Half Measure and Full Measure, near the end of Season 3. But honestly, I have enjoyed every episode of the show equally, and very very much. I can't really pick favorites :P

As for my thoughts on the season 4 premiere:
Spoiler
I knew right away that Gus would kill Victor, just from the look on his face when he saw Victor cooking. Also, before the commercials ended there was a warning about graphic content that they don't usually show. So that kind of spoiled that part for me.

I also think Jesse has lost it. I don't know. He was traumatized and then at the end he was perfectly fine. I can't help but shake this feeling that he's finally come to terms that he can't be a good person. I've always considered Jesse to be good at heart, and Walt being a cold hearted sonuvabich. But I don't know what to think anymore.

I honestly can't come up with any predictions that would make sense. I'm sort of pulling these out of thin air, but I think that Skyler is going to start going against Walt, so to speak. And I would bet money that Gus is going to try and get Jesse over to his side. Walt has so much marital problems and self conflict that I think Gus is going to lose faith in him and go for the careless but trustworthy and street smart Jesse, but mostly because he wants Walt dead, obviously.

But, I'm hoping that in the end, Gus dies and Mike will become friends with Walter and Jesse. But I don't know. I just can't read this damn show. So many twists and turns I'm always on edge. I can see the series ending in so many different ways, though. I just can no longer see the series ending with Walter alive. I think he'll die by Jesse or Hank's hand. And I know for a fact that Walt Jr. is going to find out sooner or later, and I have no idea how he'll react to it.

Spoiler
I wonder what's in that folder on Gayle's desk that says, "Lab Notes?" Daa daa duuuuum!

Spoiler
At the beginning of the episode, it was shown to include his notes on the testing of Heisenberg's blue meth. The fact that it was a school folder went with how Gayle was dressed (tshirt and shorts) and his general giddy attitude while setting up the superlab (like a schoolboy in a candy shoppe).... So we know WHAT'S in there, but what will the homicide investigators make of it? Of course this is why I question whether the storyline will include a homicide investigation that finds its way to Gus' door. Should they find Gus as a suspect or the like, checking his glasses would likely reveal traces of Victor's DNA. Will Walt have to kill Gus to avoid his own death, or will the DEA manage to take care of Gus for him?

As for Jesse, I am continuing to predict that he is going to die this season. Killing Gayle has clearly unhinged him, and we all know he's a loose cannon to start with. It wouldn't take much for him to slip back to using drugs, and should he truly conclude that he's a "Bad" person, I could actually see Jesse taking his own life. Or, if they really wanted a dark twist, having Jesse's irrational behavior become a threat to Walter ( a genuine threat like the possibility of Jesse telling Hank or some other authority) and having Walter feel compelled (or even stronghanded by Gus) to kill Jesse himself. Walter is a true rationalizer, and if his own life were threatened he wouldn't have to dig too deep to come up with a reasoning that the most compassionate option for putting Jesse down is that he do it. Right? Walt wouldn't want Gus or Mike to kill Jesse, but under the right circumstances could convince himself to.

I got Episodes 1-3 from Netflix today and just finished watching them... WOW, that was really really good. I have no idea how they'll keep that level of quality going for 30+ episodes but I'm excited to find out.
