Breton can have black eyes, what is that?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:21 pm

I'm in the character creation, checking out Breton as a race and I notice they can have black eyes, what is that about?
I know the white eyes are for blindness, so it's not that. Do anyone of you know why Breton can have black eyes?

When I see the black eyes, I think about the demons in Supernatural (tv show) - so is that it?

(Ops, a second question that I almost forgot about; if you become a vampire in Skyrim with black eyes, do they change at all?)

Black is an eye colour, it's extremely rare, but it IS an eye colour. Think that's just it.

I think that the op means that the eyes are completely black, including the part that should be white.

Bretons have Elven blood, so that is why they can genetically get all black eyes.

I see.

Hm, do you think Bretons with black eyes or Wood Elfs with their unique eyes will get glowing eyes as the vampire in the trailer has?

All human races at least can get totally black eyes. It is listed in the Creation Kit as "demon eyes". I believe it is also used a couple of times ingame to indicate when an NPC is taken over (like during Boethia's Proving quest).

The Bosmer had black eyes in Morrowind, if I recall correctly. May be related to that?

Yes, any Meshes or Textures or other graphical elements that can be applied to NPCs can be chosen during character creation for the PC. So, if you want all black eyes, go for it. If you don't want all black eyes, choose something else.

Do you know how the black eyes changes when you turn into a vampire? Do they change at all?

A genetic abnormality can cause the iris to become deformed. I have seen people in real life with an iris that is not completely circular, more an oval shape. If that can happen more frequently, who is to say that over generations, the iris will completely cover even the sclera (white of the eye). Asians have a black iris so, if it happened in an Asian race, they would have totally black eyes.

I don't see a problem with it.

I remember when I was a young Breton... fooling around with conjuration... I saw a vision of Sheogorath NAKED! MY EYES!

They've been black since that day....

Unless the character has heterochromia eyes (two different colour eyes). The way the game handles eyes it doesn't take heterochromia into account, because the other colour eye is added ontop of two eyes of the same colour. If your character has heterochromia eyes or one blind eye, only one of the eyes will become vampiric. It is an annoying limitation, but there doesn't seem to be a way around it.
