Hi everyone...First sorry for my english...I have the bsod problem from day one with skyrim.The game was running fine until i exit the first dungeon of the game and moving to riverwood, then boom black screen.I had this problem only outdoors as the game didn't crash in dungeons or caves.So i tried everything from 11/11/11 i got the game that this forum and nexus provided without success.So after so many hard crashes i downloaded msi afterburner that someone suggested in nexus forums...I have the ati hd 6770 gpu and it has clock speed 850 mhz and memory clock 1200 mhz.So i underclock the memory clock from 1200 to 1000 mhz from the program because ati ccc couldn't do it and i run the game fine for three days now without bsod or crash or anything else, i only reduced the memory clock speed a little...I don't know if this will help any other i hope so.I also have the 4 g patch and enbseries patch 9 installed but i had them before and the game was crashing so it is clearly the memory reduce that solved my problem.I will continue to post here if the game continues to play fine...I also want to add that i don't have any other problem with games this happens only in skyrim...

It dont sound like a fix, more likely issue with your specific card is a fault on the hardware or bios.

But if you dont experience this in other games i guess its a good tip, im not going to be negative about it

Fourth day now without a single hard crash the game is running fine after the underclocking...

ok i want to share that i play fine now for a week at least 3 hours a day without bsod or crashes anymore thanks to the underclocking...I also use the game booster 3 program, the 4 gb patch and enbseries 9

That's awesome to hear, I am actually going to save this thread in case I run into a similar problem when I start playing.

I'm sure this might work for some. However I am suspicious that the real fix is it's just running cooler due to being under clocked / under volted.
So if running cooler is the issue, has just cleaning the fans, vents and heatsink been done first to rule it out.
It's a common issue with pc's and laptops once these start to get dirty, fluffy and dusty it ends up the whole machine running hotter which in term ruins stability.

Lethos i don't know what the real problem is but i know that many people have this exact problem maybe some pc expert can give some thoughts...I have also cleaned my fans , vents etc and my gpu and psu was one month old when i got the game so they couldn't have so much dust...Ok now i continue to play the game fine after the underclock i am 44 level now and 75 hours in the game and i am bsod free for over two weeks now except one time i installed 12.1 ati drivers so i rolled back to 11.11 c and i'm fine

As a Games programmer and someone who has been building their own computer (for over 15 years) and tweaking them for about 10 years, thats why I said the above.
Inadequate cooling would explain the issues most the time if anyone came to me asking for my advice.
But hey if it works when you've tried everything else, it svcks but it might be the only option for some.

ok guys i want to share that the game is very stable after the underclocking i play fine now for over a month i am lvl 58 and put over 100 hours in the game i hope this helps someone.I also open the game with gamebooster 3...

I'll throw in that I experienced the same sort of situation back with fallout 3, my at the time pair of 8800GTXes were the OC2 editions and I was hitting instability in FO3 but not in other games, reverting the memory speed down to spec resolved it entirely. Bethesda's games just use vram in a fashion that not many other games do and its quite sensitive to speed/timing of it that isn't 100% stable. I can certainly believe that underclocking the vram can be a fix for some people's cards for sure in Skyrim.

/Word to the wise though: Later on down the road I found that one of the 8800GTXes was dying and indeed needing to underclock the memory may be a sign that your own cards are on their way out as well if this does fix things for you.

My ati hd 6770 is two months old and i have played many games with it without any problem ever...I finished mass effect 2, I play battlefield 3, gta iv, saints row 3, a little assasins creed revelation, witcher 2...This particular problem happens only in skyrim i don't know what is this...Maybe it's the drivers i don't blame the game only

Crashes usually aren't the game's fault per say, just the way it interacts with your pc and the software running. The game isn't crashing in a sense, because it's not designed to, but sometimes it just clashes with something.

The developers should test on as many possible software configs as they can, but at the end of the day every single game will always have problems for some people. And the more units a game ships, probability dictates that more people will experience problems.

Sounds to me like the problem that you have fixed is that your power supply is not providing enough juice for your graphics card. In a cpu intensive game like skyrim, you're going to be stressing your power supply more than usual. Add to it the insane amount of power that todays graphics cards use and most stock power supplies just can't keep up. By under clocking your card, you have probably lowered the watts drawn by the card.

I've seen some graphics cards that need the voltage tweeked, straight out of the box (2GB 560 ti for one), in order to run stable. I wouldn't suggest anyone try this unless you know what you are doing.

My psu is an lcpower 550 watts with one 6-pin and the recommended psu for hd 6770 from amd is 450 watt at least with one 6-pin...I dont know maybe this is the problem but my psu is also new i bought it with the gpu...Why skyrim needs so much power??? I can play battlefield 3 perfectly without problem and so many new games...

What should i do with the gpu should i give it back to the store i bought it to check it if it has any problem???? I have the warranty paper...But i don;t have any other problem with any other game or application...

You know if they'll take it back for an exchange you may as well try it, call first though before pulling the card out and trying to bring it back to them and see what they can do for you. Its probably too late for such a thing though and very likely they'll just refer you back to the manufacturer of the card. If that's how it goes then you'll have to make your case with the manufacturer's support people but usually they're pretty good about getting a description along the lines of "When I run the card at normal clock rates I get artifacts and eventually it blue screens but when I underclock the memory the card can play the same stuff for hours". If they can offer something like an advance exchange that'd be a pretty good way to do things (you put up your credit card as collateral but they send you the replacement card first, then you send your current one back in the same packaging, very convinient).

I know I'd be bugged if my cards at reference spec clockrates were unstable and led to crashing.

Well guys i decided to give the gpu to a tech to test it...As i said above i bought my card ati hd 6770 two months before and it played many games excellent except skyrim which gives me black screens.I manage to fix my problem with underclocking the gpu but i wanted someone to test my gpu in order to see if it is faulty.So they test it with various stressing tests and games and they checked the temps everything is fine and it passed all the tests.So what exactly is the problem with SKYRIM i don't know???

Ok guys i want to share that after the underclock of the gpu i finished the game fine in level 73 i finished all the guild quests i have 150 hours in the game bsod free and i manage to put over 20 mods in the game without problem...The moment i turn the clock to the card normal settings the game crashes the pc...I have not yet manage to make my pc crash like that with other games and i play mass effect 3, battlefield 3, metro 2033, witcher 2, all very demanding games they never hard crashed like skyrim...I hope this hels somebody to play this game cause it is the best game i ever played...

My overclock needed a memory underclock for it to work, kept crashing the gpu drivers!

Did they test the GPU IN your system or was it a bench test?......I would still suspect a marginal power supply as the culprit.

They test it out of my pc...But why this is happening only in skyrim i play so many demanding games never had this problem...The psu is 550w and the gpu needs 450w at least and it has one 6-pin, it could be the psu but don't have a demanding pc i only have one hard disc, an i3 cpu my mobo isn't something special the most demanding is my gpu so i thing the psu can support the system and i dont have any other problem from september that i upgraded.

100W to spare for the CPU, RAM, HDD, etc. etc., plus any USB attachments you have that might be powered solely by the system (ex., a wireless mouse, keyboard, USB speakers) is...not a lot. Especially since, past patch 1.4, Skyrim is working the GPU a lot harder. With my single 6970 I regularly see 60%+ GPU usage.

The harder your system has to work, the more power it's going to demand, especially the GPU. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you're getting up near its limits and, because of its age or because it's just not a very good PSU, it hits a certain threshold and promptly craps out. Might be worth asking the shop to stick a higher wattage PSU in your system and test that out.
