Bugged Locations

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 5:29 pm

Hey all.

My Courier Letters and Treasure Notes no longer list the locations. Instead, they cut off exactly where the locations should be stated:

Courier Letters read "To our respected investor, it seems our expedition to" and Treasure Notes read "I have almost found the " respectively. (The first should list a location, the second an enchanted object).

Maddening, but I'm more concerned that it'll cause more bugs since the map doesn't update either.

I reverted back to 1.3.10 just to make sure my save wasn't corrupted (and disabled all my mods and scripts, of course), and it wasn't the save. This only occurred on 1.4. I even tried opening a save-game from post patch 1.4 with the 1.3.10 TESV. I ran into the same bug.

Funnily enough, the miscellaneous quest journal still has all the records (i.e. Explore Blizzards Rest and find the Axe of Respite). It's just all my collected Treasure Notes and stuff in my inventory that doesn't. I've tried spawning new treasure notes and courier letters, and they all have the same problem. I only noticed it because I pickpocketed a Courier Letter from a passing courier and discovered it was almost entirely blank (so getting one ones in the "official" way is also broken; my map didn't update).

I did have a lot of mods I used, but I didn't have this problem with these mods in 1.3.10. Not to mention I disabled them when I tried to figure out what was causing the problem.

Is this a problem from Patch 1.4.21?

Yes, this seems to have been introduced post-patch 1.4 final. I've seen other reports of it and it's where the would be that it cuts off. It was reported in the beta forum before it went final but seems to have been missed.

It's... iffy. I've had truncated notes, yes, but I've also gotten completely coherent letters of inheritance and courier letters since 1.4.

All right, thanks. I wanted to make sure that it was due to the patch, and not due to mods possibly corrupting my savegame.

If it's just a scripting error then hopefully Bethesda can solve this in another patch? Until then I'll stick to 1.3.10 so it doesn't carry over into my savegames.

There is no page to turn. (At least for Courier's Letters). Other than that, I've tried.

Could have been a display problem. What about posting a screencap?

What do you mean a display problem? :S

The map doesn't update. So I'm kind of dubious that the message is just not being displayed.

How often do you get notes of these types? I ask because, in over 400 hours of playing, I have not received a single example of either type!

I actually get these fairly often. I pickpocket passing couriers for the letters, and I find treasure hunters along the road.

I like to avoid fast travel if I can. Also, I'm using Wars in Skyrim - dunno if that increases the likelihood of couriers, but who knows.

I reported this in the beta after 1.4.21 was made available on Monday, January 30th. It was not addressed by Bethesda and they went ahead and made that version of the game live on Wednesday, February 1st. I have also http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1331118-unofficial-buglist/page__view__findpost__p__20210209 it in the Unofficial Buglist thread.

These letters/notes are radiant quests and they possess and entries that are dynamically filled in. For example, if the dungeon is Redoran's Retreat, the hold would be set to Whiterun. Since these letters/notes are getting truncated right where the first entry appears, it seems clear that the dynamically assigned locations are breaking the contents of the letters, essentially breaking these radiant quests. I don't know why this was not fixed in the beta, as there was little to no communication from Gstaff or other Bethesda personnel regarding issues that were reported and confirmed. I have send a PM to Gstaff outlining the issue and citing reports that I know of. Other than that, I don't know any other ways to bring this to Bethesda's attention.

Thanks for both the explanation and the notifications to Bethesda, Kastagir.

It's reassuring to know it's not just something with my system. Sadly, it looks like 1.3.10 will have to be the patch of choice for now (at least for me). I can't ignore patch 1.4.21 breaking the radiant quest system - that's a significant part of Skyrim's fun.

It's not accurate to say that 1.4.21 breaks radiant quests. Most of them work fine, it's just this particular kind of radiant quest. It's a regression, though, so that is bad. The improvements offered in 1.4.21 far outweigh this particular issue. In fact, many spawnpoints that are locations where random encounters could occur will break under certain circumstances (usually related to corpses not cleaning up properly) under 1.3.10, but the same spawnpoints will be fixed by 1.4.21 due to the changes to how corpses are cleaned up.

I reverted back to 1.3.10 though because 1.4.21's breakage of these radiant quests was carried on through the savefiles. That's to say, even if I used the 1.3.10 engine on a 1.4.2.1 savegame, the radiant quests would remain broken.

I don't want this to persist with my main character, so I've gone back for the time being.

We're looking at this.

This occurs if you have the letter in your inventory that you didn’t read prior to Patch 14 and thebn read it after installing 1.4..
