Build your own gaff.

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:59 am

Anyone else wish they could 'build their own gaff'?

Forget those houses in the various cities and towns, I wish you could buy or annex a plot of ground and earn money to 'build my own gaff'.

Before I did so, I'd have to:

Do a quest for a builder.
Earn enough money to pay for certian things to be built.
Hire a seamstress to design an outfit for my guards.
Hire guards to fend off bandits and giants and whatnot.

Then I'd like to be able to:

Build a manor house for me.
Build an Inn.
Build a couple of houses for a select number of friends I make on my quest travels to live in.
Choose an occupation, horse breeder, dog breeder, mead maker etc.

Beth would have to:

Limit the size of the smallholding I could build.
Give the game a kind of ingame modding toold, controlled by the game but picked by me.
Send some radiant AI travellers my way.

I think this would be ace. I'd set up a high mountain small holding and give it a name like 'Shelob's Lair'.

I'd despatch allcomers and deal in books.

-snip-

If you took the time to explain that a gaff is a house, why not just call it a house..?

Otherwise, people might assume you mean the usual meaning of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_gaff

That would be sweet, perhaps even your own pet heh?
And with that i mean like a tamed sabertooth cat, that vampire girl has a large spider. So this would do fine IMO

It's more than just a house. It's a village that the OP wants to build. So, if you think about it, it cost like 28,000 gold septims to buy Proudspire in Solitude, so depending on which style of village you wanted to build I'd imagine this costing a fair amount of gold. This is a good idea. It could be the perfect money sink. I would imagine the cheapest style would look similar to Riverwood or Dragon's Bridge (log cottages), and the most expensive could rival the look of Solitude (more of a castle feel). It'd be interesting if you could do this with caves as well or even in some trees. It'd be neat to be something like the ewok village. Maybe you could clear a ruined castle of bandits and claim that spot of land to build a new settlement. This would be such a great money sink. I love the idea.

I like the idea of building your own village, but I think it would probably have to wait for a new expansion rather than DLC.

What I think could make it into DLC is the ability to chose any "available" dwelling as your own and then "decorate" it.

What makes something available? Well, complete X quest, kill all it's former inhabitants, or have it simply be "not owned".

I would love for this to happen. The only problem I could think of is how would Bethesda incorporate this new city into their lore?

Good question. Perhaps it becomes a "Forgotten City". I would imagine that, if it were to be incorporated at all, it could be done with as little as a sentence or a paragraph about the dragon born starting several villages. Something non-descript could suffice.

Something like: "During that time there arose many new villages and hamlets. The peace was kept and the lord on that land was said to be just and mighty. It is said that the founder of these places was the Dragonborn... yadda yadda yadda.. Forgotten in the sands of time... Bob's your uncle."

I don't think I would like to build my own house, it would be too long winded and annoying. Plus this is Skyrim, so I'd probably get a house with no roof or no stairs to my top floor. I would like the option to buy any house in the game, a bit like what they did in Fable.

Ah yes, but would you have to continually make tea for your builders or else they will grind to a halt and just stand around talking about the footy, thats what happens in my experience at least.

The gaff you built wouldn't have to be i he Lore as it would only be a small settlement. I just think we have got this huuuuggee expanse of land which is basically free roam, why not start to add more and more depth to the game.

Gaff originates from Ireland and is slang for house by the way.

And pied a terre is posh talk for shagging gaff.

OT : A nice round tower, on the mountains overlooking Whiterun. That will do nicely, thanguverahmuch. With tunnels, natch.

I don't see why a town would have to be in the lore at all. Do new settlements not spring up every once and a while..?

I'd love to defend my 'gaff' from marauding bandits. AI driven like they are when you spot a bunch being swotted by giants.

This! Bandit raids would be cool if they were factored in on all the settlements.

(But then they'd have to actually stick to their word about "sabotaging an economy")
