Building a New PC for Skyrim

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:43 am

Hey everyone, first off let me say this is my first time building a PC. I am sure I dont have all the listed components nor have all that i need yet im still researching. Also I am unsure of where this thread should go either. Seeing as this PC is getting built for Skyrim and all I assume here due to there not being an official tech thread for it yet.

Also i am aware that the system requirements are not up yet. At least i have not seen them...

Now then onto the computer its total cost will put it to about 1000 to 1100 after i deduct the comp case i want. here is what i am going for spec-wise

Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Superclocked 1280 MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 2DVI/HDMI/Display Port SLI Ready Graphics Card(($357.99))

Motherboard: ASUS P6T WS PRO LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Core i7 / Xeon Intel Motherboard (($279.99))

RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model (($99.00))

Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive ((69.99))

Sound Card: Creative 70SB088000004 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Express 1x Interface PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium ((99.00))

Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ((99.00))

I would really like to find a way to cut the price down on this and still be able to play Skyrim on full settings so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John :)

Ok so you have an Intel motherboard with a AMD CPU, that is not going to work.

16GB of RAM is way overkill for gaming. Unless you are doing server virtualization or video editing there really is no need to have more than 8GB right now. (4GB is even fine, but 8GB is so cheap there really is no reason not to get it)

The Spinpoint F3 is a good hard drive, I use one in one of my PCs. Sound card is nice, but you have onboard sound if you want to keep costs down.

Remember you also need a PSU, an OS install disc and a optical drive.

I would recommend sticking with an Intel Core i5 2500k if your budget allows (you will need a socket 1155 motherboard for that)

$358 for a graphics card and $280 for a motherboard? Holy crap

I suppose you could cut down on the RAM, remove the sound card, and maybe go for a GTX 560Ti or AMD 6950 and then get a better processor i.e. i5-2500K or one of the new Bulldozer AMD processors (although I'm not sure how well they have been reviewed, I have heard positive and negative things about them).

For CPU go with i5. Most bang for the buck. Real easy to overclock.

For GPU, Go for AMD 6 series or Nividia 5 series

OR you can just copy my sign and you get a nice PC.

What they said + I would suggest to invest in an SSD, it can work wonders with load times.

Oh snap i didnt even notice the board and CPU error... this deployment is getting to my head.
Ok so let me see here

New Board maybe :
ASUS Sabertooth 990FX AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Then for the RAM

Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model

That drops about 120 bucks

As far as the video card goes would that be some overkill as well?

I didnt even know what SSD was to be honest

General Hardware Questions belong in the Comunity Discussion Section. Don't worry, there are plenty of geeks over there too. ;)

I will move this now.

No mention of PSU. Don't try and save too much here, so make sure you get a good quality one and have power to spare. Especially if you plan to overclock.

Here is a build that I would put together for under $950 not including a case.

Ok I already have the OS back home so that saves me some dough. As far as that build Star would that be a med-high running capability based off of the speculations of the system reqs for skyrim

It should allow you to max it, of course if you want you can go to a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130684. But a bit more expensive. A GTX 560 TI will allow you to run most games perfectly though.

That comes to $832, which leaves you the rest to pick a case, and buy any peripherals you might need.

You dont need a sound card as you have a built in one on the motherboard. You can add an extra one if you want, but it is not needed for a basic build.

You will have onboard sound which is perfect for anything except sound editing/production. You could get one, but it's an unnecessary expense. My onboard sound has been more than sufficient for my gaming needs.

EDIT: Beaten to it.

Nah, you don't need one. They are integrated.

Sound card.

Anyway, Integrated sound-cards on the mobo is good enough. So no need for an external.

Creative has a brand of Sound Blaster sound cards. Onboard sound is fine, but if you want to get a sound card they can make the audio quality a bit better. I use a HT Omega Striker sound card and it sounds very nice. Though unless you plan on hooking your PC to an expensive sound system or a pair of high end headphones you really wont notice a difference between onboard sound and a dedicated card.

Ok i got you, they were just considerably cheaper so i figured its wasnt a full card but rather a addon.

Now Im trying to figure out was a SSD is but it seems to deal with load times?

A SSD (Solid State Drive) is like a standard Hard Drive as in it stores your data for you. Unlike a traditional hard drive, it has no moving parts making boot times and loading times extremely fast. It is nice to have, but they can be expensive. Price per GB is coming down but its still around $2/GB or higher.

I use a 60GB drive for my main programs and boot drive. Like I said, its nice to have them now, but they are not needed for a gaming system.

An SSD is a solid state drive and hold memory on microchips rather than spinning disks and movable read/write heads which is how a HDD works. An SSD transfers data faster therefore can help load times, they are however alot more expensive and to be honest not worth it at their current price

or as Starforce9 said^ :goodjob:
