Burned out on Skyrim a bit, should I play Oblivion or Morrow

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:06 am

Title says it all. I have spent ridiculous amounts of time playing Skyrim, I've played Oblivion very very little and never tried Morrowind, so which one?

If you're burnt out on one beth game, play the complete opposite of a beth game. Get serious sam or batman or something. Something linear, action packed and well written (maybe batman over serious sam.) My 2 cents

Meh, Im probably going to start playing through ME and ME2 to prepare for ME3 when I tire of skyrim. Idk, maybe just me but oblivion would be too similar to give me a "break".

I really want to play one of these games badly. I just don't know which one I should immerse myself completely in first.

Yep... change genres entirely. They're rumored to be announcing Diablo III's release date tomorrow.

then do Morrowind - I don't know what mods the kids are playing these days, but I remember some great ones for adding extra wildlife, harvest flora was a must, along with the free beth-made ones.

There are very strong feelings going around on Oblivion and Morrowind. And there have been immense numbers of verses threads. I hope this doesn't go in that direction.

Both are good games. Oblivion is obviously the more recent, so the graphics will be better. If you play Morrowind you may need to mod it a lot to get acceptable graphics and also you will still need to read the dialogs (mostly it's not voice acted).

For Oblivion I highly recommend OOO and MMM which are huge mods to change gameplay and monsters etc; Quarls retexturing and Natural Environments makes major graphical improvements, in some places the game is comparable to Skyrim (except NPCs), also the nGCD mod for improving a weird leveling system.

For Morrowind, this is a good source of mods:

This is very, very subjective but I'd recommend Oblivion, since to me it seems closer to Skyrim in several ways. But that is just an opinion based on taste, and also that Oblivion is the more recent game.

One thing you may want to consider is Fallout 3 (or Fallout New Vegas). They are actually similar to Skyrim (and Oblivion and Morrowind) in that there is a huge open world to explore. Completely different environment (Fallout 3 is a nuclear devastated Washington DC in a 1950s future).

I'm sorta with the "if you're burned out on one TES game you should switch genres"

but at the same time I see the value in going towards Oblivion or Morrowind, Both offer a grand selection of mods and both are tunable to your tastes.

Fallout 3 or NV?

Myself, I looking forward to Diablo 3 and Guildwars 2. Both should come out this year.

If you're interested in trying out a new game, I might recommend taking a shot at playing the Mass Effect series or taking a stab at Witcher 2. I enjoyed both immensely, and they're a nice change of pace. If you want to make a radical change, you can search around for the Total War series which is comprised of turn-based/real time strategy games.

If you want the one that differs the most from Skyrim then play Morrowind. You may find certain aspects of it frustrating, though, if you're used to Skyrim. The combat is based on dice rolls and class building is more complicated than it was in Oblivion. Both are good games, though.

If you do play Oblivion make sure to get the mod that has a quest line to rebuild Kvatch. That was a really good one that eventually restores the city to usefulness. In the original game it stays destroyed which I never did like. There are also some really nice ones that add wildlife, fish in the water, better plant life, enhanced graphics. Those help the apperance of the game immensely. And I can't remember what it was called but there was a mod that changed all the wierd faces to look much better. They ended up looking more like the ones in Skyrim which is a huge improvement. There are some really wierd looking noggins in the original game.

Fallout is pretty good but since that wasn't a choice I'd say morrowind would be the better choice. Oblivion has broken level scaling.
