Burned Out on Skyrim

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 4:00 am

Recently in the last month or so I started playing Skyrim again. I actually completed the Stormcloaks questline. I have also found new locations I have never discovered before. Over all I feel satisfied. That is were the fun ends, though.

Lately I've made about 10-15 characters. I've only played each for about 10-25 hours each. I would say the biggest gripe I have about Skyrim is lack of classes. I mean you could argue that, you don't need the game telling you that you are an assassin, when the skills you are using assassins would normally use. That said though, I still like the game recognizing that you are a specific class. It makes you feel like the specific skills you use matter more. That's is just my personal opinion.

Another issue bugging me for a while is the lack of attributes. It really bugs me that don't know how strong or how agile my character is. Skyrim's character system is one dimensional which is really shallow imo, two dimensional character progression is way more deep and rewarding.

Those are some really big glaring flaws I have with Skyrim. There are more, but I'm just too lazy to list all of them. I think Skyrim is amazing game, but when it comes to actual RPG mechanics, its lacking heavily.

I feel your pain and agree with your statements. As an RPG, Skyrim is actually a really shallow game.

I agree also. There really aren't many differnt ways to solve things, and I feel what choices I can make have little impact.

Although I have been playing New Vegas again recently. I just finished Old World Blues for the first time and I honestly cried... It just felt very emotional.

Also another thing that bugs me a lot is Bethesda's heavy dependence on perks instead of the ACTUAL SKILLS!

But in essence they're similar, no? Instead of "One-handed comprises of XX skills, its now XX perks." And yea, perhaps skyrim is lacking in the usual RPG mechanics, but im quite fine with skyrim's new approach. The health/mana/stamina mechanic allows for some wacko builds though, hah :D

Hmm you're probably right. It's more of a FP action adventure game. That said I preferred the game to Oblivion (though I liked the world of Oblivion better), just wished they'd included an image of what your character looked like in the journal, that really annoyed me that they removed that. I liked the abolition of classes, didn't everyone just restart and pick a custom class anyway after like 30 mins ?

Skyrim is a terrible RPG, and a brilliant action adventure game.

These were my thoughts as well ~before it shipped, based on description alone.

I can't offer an opinion on shallow or not, as I do not know this first hand.

That's not the point of classes; even custom classes can be supported, so long as they are balanced classes, and have class based restrictions.

As an aside, removing classes deals quite a bit of damage to replay-ability IMO.

Thats what sells games to a wide audience these days. You either live with it or dont buy it. Vote with your wallet.

Well how many specific classes would you have liked them to put in the game? Six? A dozen? Fifty?

As it is there's a limitless amount of 'classes' and builds that can be created in the game, precisely because they removed named classes - freeing up the player to be whatever they want.

It's also how they described the game before it was released, "In Skyrim, you are what you play", so you can't exactly accuse them of false advertising. I guess it's just not the RPG for you.

Yes. Given my obsession with the world of Elder Scrolls I'm likely to buy every kind of game they release. I'm even seriously considering buying ESO... I HATE MMO's. Only one I could stand playing was WoW..

But the chance to visit every province, with decent graphics, is just mouthwatering.

That is actually the only interest I have with it. One of the things I enjoyed about WoW was exploring the world. Though I wouldn't buy it just for that, I really do want to see all of the exotic places.

I'll need to play a trial first before I make any decisions regarding purchasing ESO.

I agree with your 'onion' it was a sad dlc, funny.. but sad.

I feel the way Fo has done it with the special system made me progress my character in different ways everytime I played again. In skyrim seeings as there are a lack of story changing events I'm always playing the same way.

In Fo:NV I could side with 4 different people and do dramaticly different things within the same story. If I lacked the speech I'd have to kill everyone, If i lacked the weapons I'd have to run etc.

I play on console and I'm still playing, ON THE ONE PLAYTHROUGH !! 300 hours, still haven't completed the Main Quest (about halfway through) or any of the Guild Questlines (haven't even started them).. In saying that I took a long break, mostly down to waiting for patches.

Yeah i feel like there isn't many ways to go about differently with quests. The first 150 hours you get on a character are amazing, and have me completely svcked in. But after creating a new character and trying to play differently, its really not all that fun when your forced to do a quest the same exact way as before. I can't complain though, i've never had a single player game keep me in for 200+ hours long and i salute Bethesda for it. I'm just ready for the DLC now.
