Buying a Gamepad/Controller

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:48 pm

It has come to my attention that KB&M is not the best control scheme for Skyrim on PC

So. I am going to buy a controller. The last time I did so, was the best part of 13 years ago.

I want something cheap, but I'll go for quality before price.
Should I just go for an xbox 360 controller? Or are there better alternatives on PC?

Edit: I live in New Zealand. Skyrim costs $110 NZ, which equates to roughly $90 US. New, an xbox 360 controller costs $60 NZ.
I've already looked at the combo together, and cannot afford.

I prefer the 360 controller simply for ease of use.

Any GFW branded PC game has native 360 controller support. I just plug in my wireless receiver, it loads the drivers without going online, and just works in games.

P.S.

Oh, and Valve games, you just type exec 360controller into console for their games (HL2. TF2, etc.) and it works.

Then exec undo360controller if you want to disable it.

Sweet...

The only problem with that is price. I guess I'll have to trial mouse and keyboard until controller is valid option.

K. I'll have to wait til I can afford it then. Budgeted $140 for Skyrim, and 110 of that will be required to buy teh game itself ($NZ )

I've got a logitech chillstream, and Oblivion didn't recognize one of the anolog sticks so I couln't turn around. If you want to be sure then you need to go for a 360 pad, if you have patience, I might be able to comment how skyrim handles with a logitech gamepad sometime tomorrow (it's 0:29 here).

I picked up a Logitech F310 gamepad

it feels like a hybrid between an xbox and ps3 controller

EDIT: it was only about $25 at Best Buy, cheaper if you order online and have it shipped

Sweet thanks, that would be appreciated :) I've got loads of time. Exams don't finish til the end of the month.

Sweet thanks. I found it for $37.30 NZ on the internet, and freeshipping, so that is good :) Will you let me know how it goes?

Now the second question is this: I have the opportunity to borrow an xbox 360 controller off a friend, but it won't happen til this summer. It's quite a few years old, and one day they may expect it back. Would you recommend that I buy new? Is the logitech f310 better than an xbox 360 controller? I obviously don't want to buy the wireless connection.

Are you looking at the correct 360 controller? They make one specifically for PC-only and it's very cheap. The Xbox version will be more expensive.

I'd recommend a wired one so you won't have to buy batteries every few weeks.

P.S.

Works with most Windows Vista-based PCs

Works with Windows, period.

Both the xbox version and the pc version of the controller work with the pc - get the wired version, whichever is cheaper. You're probably sitting close enough the box anyway, no point in wasting money like Stardog said, on batteries etc. I have one that I got for Saints Row 2 and Batman and I love it. I'm sorry to hear that keyboard mouse isn't as good but whatever, it's nice to play with the controller for games that use it well.

Wired one - that's a given :) Recharging batteries is a pain in the neck, my mouse is bad enough.

I think so.. Here's the link: http://dikesmith.co.nz/product/YG2738/xbox360-wired-black-controller-controller-for-pc-gaming, and heres the search: http://dikesmith.co.nz/dsnz/search/dsnz_search_results.jsp

Remember: These are New Zealand Dollars.

I've had a 360 controller since back before I even owned a 360 (got it mostly for playing the NHL games on PC, it was a while before I found out that PC ports of EA Sports games are terrible compared to the console versions). I've got just the wired, built specifically for the PC version (works on the 360 too obviously) but it feels exactly the same as a regular controller, minus the weight of having a battery pack on it. I've used it for playing some PC games that were also released for XBLA and it works great; going to give it a try with Skyrim instead of the mouse and keyboard.

I just tried to play with my logitech (chillstream) gamepad and I can say that it worked exactly as intended; all buttons, triggers and thumbsticks are recognized correctly.

Wired 360 controller. No button mapping required, the UI will match the 360 version, and native rumble support.
