What is the deal? How many quests in Riften do I have to do before I can buy Honeyside.. geez!!

yeah, I got that part of it .. my question remains.. how many of these quests does one have to do before you are considered thane? I have already done quite a few, including killing two dragons for Anuiral already/

There are exactly 2 quests you have to do, and both of them are mentioned in the above linked wiki page, read it.

and I have completed both of them.... plus a few others.. so I am not sure why I am unable to buy the house.. is there a known bug?

Do nice things for the people, the blacksmith, the food vendor in the market, the wife of the alchemist and the argonian in the pub. Those will do, then do the skooma quest (find a women by the docks, argonian who wants a potion).

What I do, is the quest for Sadr(sp?) to settle his debt with Sapphire. Then I go to the Hall of the Dead and do the little quest for Allesandra. Then I get the Jarl's son's sword for him. Then I give the Argonian a healing potion and do the Skooma quest and the house is mine.

Yeah if you did the others, after you do that quest, it should pop up saying to visit the Jarl again. That's an easy quest too. All you do is take a dagger to Whiterun.

^{I thought you had to do about 5 sidequests for Riften NPCs? I did Bolli's, Balimund's, the alchemist's, the Argonian jeweller I think... And the adopted stall holder. There wasn't any prompt when speaking to the jarl, that's what threw me. I expected it would tell me to go do quests to buy the house. But there's no prompt; you just go back to the jarl afterwards and there's the thing about becoming thane and buying the house.}
