Buying a new Computer

Post » Sat Jul 09, 2011 8:17 pm

Im looking to buy a new computer somewhere between $400-$700.

I found a decent one on the http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo+-+Ideacentre+Desktop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i3+Processor+/+8GB+Memory+/+1TB+Hard+Drive/2677303.p?skuId=2677303&id=1218343868441#tabbed-customerreviews website.

Im not looking for a super-high specs computer, i just thought this one was good. Not to sure about the Graphics card. Im just looking to the ordinary stuff on the computer, also maybe buy some decent games that i could run on it :P

The specs are:
Intel Core i3 processor (3.1GHz)
8G of Ram
1 TB hard Drive space
Intel HD Graphics 2000

Im not to good with computers so any help would be appreciated.

You won't be able to play any modern games with that. 8 GB of RAM is also a complete overkill for that build. I and the majority of forumer's are going to suggest that you build your own. Can you do this or are you dead set on buying a pre-built model?

Yeah. If your max is $700, you can build yourself a fairly nice desktop. And if you already have things like a mouse, keyboard, speakers and a monitor, that'll give you even more options.

EDIT: It's not hard at all to do it yourself. Youtube has plenty of how to videos, not to mention the internet is filled with helpful forums and people. It's pretty much just matching up words, colors, and shapes, and knowing how to use a screw driver.

Newegg did a really great series covering how to build a PC:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPIXAtNGGCw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls
http://www.youtube.com/newegg#p/u/4/RxaVBsXEiok

As for the parts recommendations I'm not up to date enough to actually build one for you, I'm sure someone here will offer you recommendations though. If no one posts some head on over to the tech thread and say your budget and that you are buying a tower and someone will help you out.

Here is a build I just put together for $684. (About $634 with the Mail in Rebates)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130576
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231274
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136216
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=samsung_spinpoint_1_tb-_-22-152-185-_-Product Use promo code EMCKCKB22 to get $5 off
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.663113
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986&cm_re=windows_7_64-_-32-116-986-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147120&cm_re=Smart_one-_-11-147-120-_-Product

Now that is a pretty good build for the price, however if you want to spend a bit more, you could jump up to an i5 CPU. (But thats $50-60 more)

I didn't know how until yesterday, it's really easier then it seems. Newegg is a good place to shop for parts, but make sure you check that the parts are compatible with each other on these forums or some other resource.

All you need is a Philips head screw driver and a brain. If you got the proper parts, its literally a matter of snapping them into the correct slots, which are clearly designated. Honestly, the hardest part is getting the operating system installed, and even that is easy.

I would suggest AMD, Gigabyte, Corsair, OCZ, Antec and LG.. These are good names that stand up to time as far as I'm concerned..

$700? This is what I'd do...

CASE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811322035
CPU+MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.686721
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231313 ...get another later. $10 off code there.
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185 ...$5 off code: EMCKCKB22
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139017
GPU: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-PCI-Express-Graphics-01G-P3-1370-TR/dp/B003ZMTPEW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1310120945&sr=8-2
DVD:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204
OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116986

That should be around the $700 mark.

If you're a student, you can jump on this Windows 7 Deal to save $60:
http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/windows/buynow/default.aspx

With that extra money, pick up a http://www.amazon.com/XFX-Radeon-DisplayPort-PCI-Express-HD687AZNFC/dp/B0047ZH7GE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1310197452&sr=1-1 or http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-PCI-Express-Graphics-01G-P3-1460-KR/dp/B0050I1PHO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1310197295&sr=1-2 instead for a video card.
