Buying the DOOM games

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 6:04 am

Where can I buy DOOM 1 and DOOM 2 for the PC? I've looked but can't find them. About how much would one of them cost? (Separately, not total)

You can find them on Steam for $10 each. They are also available on IDs homepage store, but they are more expensive there.

OK, what about Plutonia and TNT? Where can I find those?

Damn you, Steam, for becoming relevant to my life!

Final Doom is also $10 on Steam. They have a Doom Pack for $40 that includes The Ultimate Doom, Doom2, Doom3, Final Doom, Master levels for Doom2 and Doom3: Resurrection of Evil. To play the Doom and Doom2 games with your preferred front end, simply copy the wads from the Steam folder.

Good to know! I had bought the Final Doom pack years ago and it was later stolen out of my car (they stole a lot of other stuff too it was'nt just my Doom they took) and I was never sure where to go to get my hands on another copy. So for the past 8 years or so I've just been copying my Doom folder from one hard drive to the next each time I upgraded my PC.

Oh well. I've gotten a lot of play from it. :D

Doom is the original game developed by id Software.

Doom II is the followup released about a year later. The look and feel is the same, but the maps are all new and the game has a new weapon (double barrel shotgun) and some new creatures.

Ultimate Doom is a redo of Doom that includes a new episode and the Doom II double barrel. I can't recall if it had the additional Doom II creatures. Beuller? Anyone? Beuller?

Final Doom is actually a pair of megawads of Doom II(The Plutonia Experiment and TNT: Evilution...consider them mods although they run as standalone games) that were created by a couple of teams of Doom fans using the editing tools of the time. id scarfed them up and released them as an official product. Both megawads are considered tougher than either of the original games.

My preference is Final Doom, probably because I only got it a couple of years ago and it's still fairly fresh. Recommendation? All of them. If you really pressured me, Doom II or Final Doom.

I still prefer The Ultimate Doom most of all, mostly nostalgia since it was my first DOOM purchase. I really enjoy Episode 4 which was not a part of the initial DOOM release but which has a respectable difficulty level and the story bridges DOOM and DOOM II nicely.

The reason I chose Doom II is that it was the first (and last) game that had me pacing the floor in anticipation. Doom kind of sandbagged me. I got the demo (from a BBS I think), loved it and got the full game. When Doom II was announced, I and a buddy of mine had long discussions over lunch about what it was going to be like, playing co-op via modem and "when the hell was it being released".

Um, Yasgur, I've been playing Ultimate Doom since it was released, there is no doom II double barrel in it.
Maybe if you loaded Ultimate Doom with the Doom 2 Iwad as a Pwad, in Zdoom, you could use the doom II Double Barrel in it.

But I have never heard of anyone actually using the Doom 2 Double Barrel shotgun in Doom.
I've seen a mod where the demons in Doom 1 are replaced by blue archviles...but I've never seen a supershotgun out of a weapons mod.

Thanks. I realized that today when I fired up my Steam version. I guess this means I'm only "almost" perfect. :P

Hehe. I figured you just confused the two games, and not that everyone's played a very elaborate joke on me. :)

The Steam version works fine on my Win7 64. You may want to poke around the Steam forum to see if they modified anything, but my guess is, you should be okay.

BTW, your sense of time seems a bit dilated. It was released 6 years ago. :P

They once were sold together thanks to a Collector's Edition ("Doom Collector's Edition").
I'm not sure if this CE is being commercialized.

I have nearly 1000 Doom and Doom2 wads. One of my most prized possessions.

Most of the Complete ones Mometto Morte etc. Nearly all the competition wads H2Hmudfest etc and a host of single and a couple of level amateur creations.

Thought about buying the newest versions a few times, but there is just something nostalgic about loading up DOSBox and running the original DOS version, well, version 1.2 anyway, close to the original. Still has the original maps before things like the additional secret passage in E1M1 was added and the little change was made to E1M4.

Just for curiosity's sake, I checked Amazon.com. It appears they have some copies available there at a decent price. I'm actually surprised that such an old game is still available for purchase.

Thankfully I already have this so I don't have to worry about it.:)

Do you know if the CE(I don't want to dig out my copy out) had Master Levels of Doom II on it? My memory is a little fuzzy on this.
