Everytime I tell my follower to go to the sacrafice pole he just stands there and does nothing very frustrating!

I had no trouble with this quest, I assume you are asking them in dialogue to do it, then clicking on the pole while in that mode yes?

Are you standing close enough to the pole so that it is glowing in a spiral around the base?

Yeah I have tried everything I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

I'm having the same problems

i get the glowing spiral, tell my sacrifical bait to touch the pillar "It shall be done" he cries then does nothing.
not sure if this is because i'm using a generic DB follower or not.

any ideas?

I had the same issue below is the fix :

SOME followers are effectively NO!death.

Go hire the mercenary in the Bee and Barb in Riften, that should do it for you.

I used an Orc from the Orc Daedric quest.

Not all followers can be used. For example Lydia, not sure why anyone would want to kill her though. As said above, best way is just to pay a merc follower. The mage from Bee & Barb is a good one, has a nice robe you can take off the body and sell for what you spent to hire. Plus he's annoying as all get out.

I tried a merc, and he kept saying it shall be done, but he doesnt even move into the circle lol.

I think your follower need to be a someone that can be KILL, I tried to get one of the Orc from the Orc stronghold and it work just fine.

This quest must be glitched or something. I have brought many followers to the pillar and asked them to "do something", then clicked on the pillar....nothing happens. I tried bringing the merc from Riften, as well as other mercs, but nothing happens. Grrr.....

[Xbox] Ok, I figured out my problem with this quest, thanks to someone on this board (don't remember who...). I had to reset my controller mapping to the defaults, then it worked just fine.

Even though the official guide says you can use a Dark Brotherhood Initiate, you cannot. I hired the Merc from Windhelm and was able to do it.
