Can I delete my WOW account?

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:44 am

So, for the third time I've had an email saying my account (that I thought was inactive) has been hacked and subsequently frozen for abusing the ingame chat.

So really at this stage I really want to just delete the whole blooming thing. I've Googled it and got a Yahoo Answer but unfortunately the link specified is out of date and I just can't figure how how to delete it?

Never played WoW, but I'm sure you deactivate/freeze your account...?

I can't even really figure out how to do that? I thought it was inactive. And every time I get this I change my password etc but don't really know what else to do? Surely if someone can hack in they can reactivate the account?

Those sound like phishing e-mails. Not much you can do to directly stop those, but you can forward them to hacks@blizzard.com

Word of advice for the future though: use multiple e-mails. For my WoW account I use an account that I use for absolutely nothing else, a regular e-mail that I use for general stuff, and a spam dump e-mail that I use to sign up for websites.

As to your original question: you can't delete a WoW account IIRC, only stop payment on it so it becomes inactive.

Its most likely spam from a Chinese gold farming hacker outfit trying to get you to "log in" to a suspicious website disguised to look like a Blizzard/Battlenet link. Just ignore them - Blizzard doesn't work that way. And no, you can't delete your account. You can cancel the subscription, but your account info and characters will stay backed up on their servers for who knows how long. They are banking on you coming back someday.

You could possibly try calling Blizz customer support. Good luck though.

I played and downloaded the WoW demo (never paid) about five years ago and I'm receiving those e-mails. I just ignore them. It's annoying, sure, but it's not harmful.

Odds are, that those aren't real emails from Bliz. Most scam emails pretend to be official ones, but if you click on the "reset password" link (or whatever other one they give), they actually send you to some fake site like usbattle.netBlizzard-WorldOfWarcraft-Cataclysm.net/?=asdjkag...

...which really, really, isn't an official Blizzard website.

Especially if your account is inactive.

(I've even gotten completely official looking, with all the background graphics and everything, "Come back for a free week!" promotional offers.... but, again - the link they send you to is fake, to get you to type your password in for them.)

Phishing emails make me happy that Firefox lets me just mouse over a link and see what it actually is. Most of the fake ones, the actual link doesn't look anything like the one that's typed in the email.

Yeah, someone posted one of them a few weeks ago. It looked almost convincing but if you looked closely, one of the domains was a subtle misspelling of the legitimate site. Although big companies are trying to deal with the various lookalike domain names, there's always a few that'll get through...

Thanks - I have had phishing emails but the last three have had my username on them and have been in perfect English. When I logged onto my account today it did confirm I'd been suspended due to breach of rules. This one also had the Hotmail little authentic tick thing next to it that confirms its a genuine email.

I've no payment details on the account so assume I should just ignore them all? Is there any way for them to reinstate previously added payment details? I'm fairly sure at the time I paid via CC.

No, they'd have to have your card number and security code, ect.

Anyone got the link for deactivating it? I know you guys were really helpful but I'm not really any closer to deactivating my account. :(

They don't allow people to delete it online cause you got so many nerds who get emo all the time. They would delete their account every day and phone up to restore it.
You have to call customer service to completely delete the account.

However, those emails you have been receiving are NOT from Blizzard Entertainment, they are fake mails that are trying to get your login data. There is no way to stop receiving these kind of emails.
Even if you delete your account, they will not stop coming.
I am on Gmail and have never ever received those kinds of emails, I do notice them in my junk folder though. You are probably with Hotmail or one of the other providers.

The only solution to this is to switch to Gmail since they have one of the best junk filter.

PS: I totally ignored the name of the OP! So what's your response to my question? :D

Thanks. :)

I've had phishing scam emails before but really believe these are genuine - they're completely different to the dozens of fakes I've had. They've had my username etc on them and have had information on my account like character name etc. They also have come from a specific Game Master. I've had loads of phishing scams over the years and really do think theyre genuine.

Getting hacked over and over again is pretty weird though. Don't you have a smartphone you can use to get an authenticator?

Even if you don't login people are gonna struggle hacking you if they can't get the authenticator code.

You didn't answer the question in your profile :(

That doesn't really mean anything. The easiest way is to check the header of the e-mail (not the "from" box. That's easily spoofed.) This article should help: http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=25133

Thank you. That was VERY helpful :) Turns out the email was genuine - the header is from a Blizzard.com account.
