I can't get my head around quest script fragments

I'm just not understanding quest script fragments, I really don't see why it was done in this manner. They seem like a hideously dirty and clunky way of doing stuff when what I really want, for example in a quest stage is to simply say run XYZ function in ABC script, is that not a much cleaner and easier way of doing things?

Instead you put some code in the "papyrus fragment" bit and then it starts rewriting your script, i've had multiple instances where its gone and just lost all my changes to a script I was making. And I got the same thing happening when adding properties, it starts rewriting your script for you but then it loses my work.

Sounds like a rant... well yeah it is a bit, everything so far (on the scripting side) just seems really clunky and making stuff complicated for the sake of it.
