So today I encountered a bug that I've never encountered before. I tried to get a follower and she said "Looks like you already have someone..." or something to that extent. I didn't have any followers and was confused as to why she would say that. So I tried asking her again only to get the same response.

I figured that it might have to do with the bugged quest I tried to do a few weeks ago, Purity. Basically, I messed up and tried to cure Vilkas first. I figured that he might not have been dismissed properly even though he had left my service. So I went and tried to get him to follow me, so I could dismiss him. But no luck, I got the same response that I had earlier.

So in short, the game thinks I have a follower when I really don't. Has anyone encountered this before and if so, do you have any suggestions (other than reload a save, which isn't possible for me...)
