Can one's house be robbed? : V

I've seen talk of house robberies over the net, but in 209 hours of gameplay I haven't been robbed once.

Is there anything to substantiate this claim or is it all BS?

It seems everything that can happen in this game is documented to some extent but this isn't.

It can happen, but it won't happen if you have a housecarl (or wife, not sure about that) guarding it.

You see thieves at night wondering the cities after doing the thieves guild quest line. All they do is sneaking around until caught by guards or by the hostile population. (A battle ensues afterwards and usually the thief is murdered with no trial). The only way an uninvited guest enters a house is when the player enters a cell when a NPC is talking.

Sometimes guards or hostile NPCs, if they enter a house, may decide to pick up a better weapon: this is possibly what some people report as 'NPC stealing' though it's more like a glitch or unforeseen behavior.

This is what I understand to be the case, however there are too many reports of house robberies to simply dismiss it.
