If you start a new character and never continue to main quest you will not have to deal with the dragons, at all. That's how I play.

You can still do everything else, including guild quests, daedra quests, side quests, radiant quests, etc.

That is pretty much Bethesdas calling card.
If you never go to Balgruuf dragons never appear in your game.

Yeah i've never actually had 3 dragons back to back, that's crazy. For me, I've only really had trouble with one particular elder dragon, but I beat the main quest because it has some pretty awesome shouts that you have the power to do. Up to you really.

And yes, you can play tons and tons of hours without doing the main quest.

Right now I'm just exploring. I only manage about 2 hours a day playing Skyrim and right now up to about 26 hours this play through. I've gotten to a certain point with the quest (the horn) and advanced the civil war up to a point, but mainly, I just explore dungeons and build up my character. I'm building up the enchanting, alchemy and one hand skills right now - and that for me takes a while.

I could see many more hours before I even start on the main quest. One thing I've noticed - game play does get easier (on Adept settings, so this may change). You become pretty powerful. So if you were to start the main quest straight away - it's a lot more difficult rather than doing a whole lot of exploring, leveling up and then starting the main quest.

So yeah - you can play a whole lotta hours without starting the main quest. That's more or less what I'm doing (with dragons). Now you can get to a point on the main quest where you can own the Whiterun house but not encounter the first dragon - just don't go near the watchtower. That seems to be the trigger to start dragons off. If you never do that - you can basically explore all you want without dragons.

I thought of doing that this play through, but I wanted the dragon bones and scales to create armour and then sell it off. And also wanted the Shouts - they come in really handy. Trade off I guess for encountering dragons. Before a dragon attacks a town - I always save the game, just in case they kill people I need.

And the dragon encounters seem to be triggered via ingame time. When I walk everywhere, I encounter dragons in random places. If I fast travel - they always appear in cities.

Yes you can explore & do whatever you want, you dont have to do so much of the MQ that you get Dragon attacks every 5 hours or so.

I'm experimenting atm, i've done enough to get the house in Whiterun, but i am not going to do anymore of the MQ. Hopefully i dont have Dragons chasing me, if i do, well , meh.

It's a massive game world with tons of stuff to do outside the main quest.

102 hours, level 52. I've only done like 5 quests along the Main Quest Line, don't see dragons very often at all.

Edit: Expert difficulty, if this matters at all.

Yes they do, there are still random encounters and the dragon nest places,

but if you dont do the the main quest then you will not be forced to fight them if you want to progress the story, just run away.

I just did that tower near Whiterun. That got me occassional dragons appearing. I'm not going any further in the main quest until I've completed everything else I want to do. The dragon level seems tolerable like this.

I played a character to 39 before starting the Main Quest and never had a random dragon encounter. I also avoided the places marked on the map as having a dragon.

The main quest is a very small portion of the game... Maybe 10% of the content at most

I've even gotten words off the word walls at the Dragon marked places without coming across one.

Not sure if this is a spoiler, but tags anyway.

Spoiler

You can't be the thane of Whiterun, but you can own a house. I played like this the first time - I never went to deal with the first dragon, but after you do a certain quest (which is a main quest) you can buy the house. And this is before you go to the watchtower. Just talk to the steward - the conversation from the Jarl will indicate you can buy a house at some point.

Basically a whole bunch of people will rush over to the tower to deal with the dragon - leave them alone and never go there. If you leave the main quest at that stage, you can still own a house and never deal with dragons.

Just don't half start the civil war quest (Jaggered Crown) then do the main quest fully - it doesn't break, but the story becomes a bit distorted and makes no sense at all.

But yeah - as the other dude said - you can be the Thane and owner of other houses. I prefer White run because of the stalls around it, proximity to everything and people around that can level your skills up to a high point.

I always delay the main quest. I go to Whiterun to ask for reinforcements for Riverwood, but when the Jarl's Housecarl interrupts my conversation with the Jarl to suggest that a detachment be sent to Riverwood, I back away out of dialogue range.

That way, I've satisfied RP enough by not ignoring Riverwood's plea for reinforcements, but I've not been drafted into going to Bleak Falls Barrow and I can leave to do what I want. I can later kick off the main quest at any point by talking to the Jarl.

Whiterun is the only house that forces the MQ

What I said only applies on a new game - on a current game, you're... well... stuffed.
If you've done that quest, you're going to encounter dragons. Doesn't matter if you collect or not collect items.

Level your skills up - they get easier to kill. I've got two Scimitars and if I get the dragon to land, in a couple quick swipes the dragon is down (just a normal dragon, not elder).

The main quest takes up about 5% of the game, if that.

more like .5%. also, random dragons get incredibly tedious and i would urge you to not progress the main quest at all until youve explored a fairly large amount of skyrim. you also dont want to save the world as the first thing you do.
