can't purchase a home in Markarth...

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:02 am

Vlindrel Hall. The steward Raerek in Markarth won't sell it to me. In fact, when I try to interact with him all I get is general comments in response. No dialogue options. Anyone know a fix for this? I didn't even want the house that badly, I just want my thane title.

Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone know a way to fix this? By the wY I'm on the Xbox version, no console commands. :S

What level are you? The quest to become thane of the Reach doesn't become available until around level 20 or so.

I always get houses by
Spoiler
Winning the major hold in the civil war
or by
Spoiler
Giving Riften (Honeyside is my favorite house) to General Tullius in the peace council during the Main Quest.
However, if you do that, you are only given permission to purchase the house and can't become the Thane of some of the holds, even if you do the Thaneship quests.

Answer to your question:
Spoiler
Markarth is always put up on the peace council. So if you get that far in the quest, you are guaranteed to get permission to buy the house.

It's the only town where you have to be level 20 before you are sent on the quest that opens up the house buying for you. I just bought it today actually. Very pleased with my purchase.

I've had this problam before and i think i solved it by doing to dragonborn questline(i killed the dragon near whiterun in the after you are sent to request guards for whiterun.

I'm level 53, I've completed most of the game with this character, and own Breezehome and Honeyside.

I've had the "Purchase a home in Markarth" in my MISC list for awhile, but I didn't want to spend the money on it back then, so I figured I'd come back to it...

I was thinking about the solution Lime said above in the spoiler boxes... I was hoping to do the MQ last with this character, just to avoid the random dragon fights. I guess I have no choice now.

Thanks for the suggestions.

That's for Whiterun. Not Markarth. Markarth requires you to be at least level 20 because you can even unlock the quest to become Thane of Markarth

Just curious, when you escaped from the prison, did you do it solo? Or did you help Forsworn escape, slaughtering half of the Markarth guard in the process?

It's alright, every character I make gets bugged horribly in some form. I'm getting used to it but it still svcks. At least this one isn't game breaking (I hope).

I think this should have been in spoiler box, I'm not sure how to even make one on the mobile version of these forums.

But I just watched. And I think I did the Jarl's quests after that.

I don't have a clue why he won't let me interact with him (the steward), I even tried killing him but he's flagged essential so that didn't work either.

I just stood back and watched. My character was pretty anti-forsworn up until she was thrown in jail by the Nords. Forsworn did a pretty good job without my help, and I wasn't going to help the people who tossed me in that hole.

How do you make these boxes? Do you have to type that command in brackets? Let's see.

I want my damn thane title! I hope doing the MQ will give me the option after the diplomatic meeting thing

Edit: It worked! Cool!

It worked!

Spoiler
I advanced through the main quest, finished the peace treaty, and not only was I able to purchase Vlindrel Hall, but the new Jarl Thongvor named me Thane of Markarth!

I thought I'd update you all, to let you know this was solved. But of an inconvenient work-around, but I got what I wanted. Thanks ;)
