Yes, absolutely. My past two play-throughs, I've not bothered with the College at all, now that I know where to find dear old Septimus. Of course, the reason for visiting the crazy old coot is two-fold, right?

Reminds me of Fallout 3. Just wander west, find the right garage, and lo and behold you've skipped about 15 hours of the main quest. :P
