Can you theoretically play this game wrong?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 2:31 am

I should not really care, but my friend (who loves this game) does not want it to end.. he has over 100 hours and has spend days upgrading his perks/abilities. To the point where is has dragon armor has not even started any main quests (returned the horn to grey beards) or any side quests...

Instead he just wanders the land defeating each and every dungeon that he comes across. (filling his inventory with quest items). He has the kind of personality where he will probably max out everything before long...

And more power to him, if he enjoys the game he should play as he wishes... But could this theoretically catch up to him and in fact ruin the game?

Or did bethedia do such a good with scripting events that this will not/could not possible happen?

Nothing is perfect. Theoretically of course he could screw up the game, but in actuality he should be fine. I waited till i was a high level before starting the Main Quest.

He will break quests by clearing dungeons if he didn't pick up the quest leading to that dungeon prior to entering it. It happens all the time to me. Makes exploring annoying when it should be awesome. One can only hope for a patch but I seriously doubt it'll ever be fixed.

There is no wrong way to play these games. People can play however they choose and if someone doesn't like it that is their own problem.

when i play games, i definitely feel like i play them "wrong" at different times.

i then try to correct my "mistakes."

of course, you can't tell someone they are playing wrong. for me, that's not the point or issue

however, with beth games you definitely can play the game in a way that screws the game up. like, for example, what the above posters stated.

If you are playing the game in a way you hate then I would say you are playing it wrong. When I played Oblivion I did one character and did everything.. with Skyrim I am limiting what I do each character I create. Both ways were the right way to play for me.

There is no wrong way to play the game, as long as you are having fun.

There are a few bugs. Most can be fixed, even on the PS3 or Xbox, once you encounter them by googling the bug or consulting the UESP. My recommendation is to keep many save files. Once the bugged quest becomes apparant, it may be necessary to load a prior save to fix the problem in some circumstances.

No, you cannot play this game wrong. As long as you're having fun that's all that matters.

Some people like just wandering and exploring, never getting involved with the MQ or guilds. Maybe you like RPing, really living the life of your character. Depends on what you like to do.

As you say each to their own... But that seems a rather full way to play for me? ... would you if in the real world just do every dungeon or only go when asked?

No, you can't play this game wrong because nothing you do effects anything, you have no real choices in the game either. No matter how you play the game the same stuff happens.

If he been playing for over 100 hours it sounds like he's enjoying himself. Even if his quests are ruined by clearing every dungeon, he still got a lot of play time out of the game, and can always start again.

He might, MIGHT, break quest. I played a character who clear as many dungeons as he could before doing any quests. I never ran into that problem with him. I wish people would understand that because something happens to them that the game isn't always like that. Anyways rant off, I think they will fix it, it will just take some time.

As for the OP no, there is nothing wrong with the way he is playing. In fact that's the whole point of the game. Soon as you leave Helgen you are left to do what ever you want. No need to focus on quests.

There is no wrong way to play this game, play it how you want. Everyone enjoys this game in different ways. So people like a roleplaying perspective and play by realistic rules like eating and sleeping etc. Other people like to power level smithing and own everything XD some people fast travel, some don't. It all depends how you want to play it, but none of them are wrong.

Having said that, as someone said above if you choose to explore lots of dungeons then you will break many quests... As I have witnessed.

I don't think you can play it wrong. It's a world and you can do whatever you like. I'd think though that you have to be more laid back about any quests that might not want to work after you run around and move everything in the world...you can't be all Type A about something not working later. That's not for every personality type. I've still never done the MQ and I'm having a great time. I'll probably do it eventually though. People should do what they enjoy. :tes:

I think hes doing just fine. I had a character like that once I pretty much only wanted to explore and did quests when I was bored. Ive never had an issue with breaking quests unless I killed someone who was quest related and it would tell me I failed the quest. Every player gets bugs (not always the same ones)that they have to deal with, I was lucky enough to only get the lag, bookshelf, and weapon rack bugs which have already been fixed.

When I read this kind of stories of people finding quests items and not being able to give them to the quest givers, because they found the items before being given the quests, I always wonder "do they really talk through to the people, clicking on each line in the conversation?".

A long time ago, I found the Dragonstone (in Bleak Falls Barrow) long time before being given the quest by the court wizard and I had no problem giving it to him. Recently, I came across Finn's Lute. I travelled a lot with it in my luggage but when I arrived at the bards college I found the person who needed it (Inge Six-Fingers) and was perfectly able to give it to her. So...

You can't play the game wrong. You can be whoever and do whatever you want. That's the point of Skyrim.

I don't see what it matters in an individual player game as long as you are having fun. I figure if I've played a game and enjoyed it and had fun for a 100 hours then if it screws something up it's no big deal. I start a new character and play it a different way.

We each play our own game our own way. I would imagine if someone were a completionist it would bother them and such folks may be disappointed in this game anyway as there is no way to even get every quest available in one play through since some decisions we make change what quest might or not be offered. I think those who must complete everything needs to stick to more linear and games.

I also save often and save saves so if something glitches or I screw something up I can go back and do it differently. Some may have no interest in the quests but I'd say it rare...if they are having fun anyway who am I to judge their approach? Game and let game!

Now how does one break a quest... I imagine.. you have item X before they tell you to get that item....

Walk up to them, they say find item X....
You keep clicking and it gives you option to give item...
they say Oh you found it!!! Here is your reward...

Do some quests not do this if they become broken?

You could turn your monitor around so that it faces the wall and try to play... I guess that would be wrong.

That's just the ultimate immersion method for RPing a blind character.

And I haven't yet seen much of a problem from exploring dungeons too early and grabbing quest items - only in one case was I unable to properly complete the quest, but then I found it had progressed enough to allow me to drop the item so I dropped it and pretended I had finished it as the quest had gone away apart from the objective anyway. But no, you can't play the game wrong, that's a rather silly claim, I don't think technically you can play any game "wrong" just sometimes you'll fail to achieve maximum enjoyment, which is subjective. There might be one person out there who really loves crashing pacman into ghosts.
