I cannot enjoy this game with constant CTD's

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:35 am

It is completely random, I just bought skyrim two days ago, out of the 10 hours I have played I have only just now killed the first dragon..Why? Because the game crashes at completely random times, I have searched the internet and tried many fixes myself but none worked, it is not a crash I can reproduce at will and it is not limited to certain actions/areas, I can be standing still and it crashes, I can be outside running and it crashes, I can be in a dungeon and it crashes..I can be fighting and it crashes..I PLAYED BARROW KEEP LIKE 5 TIMES TO ACTUALLY GET THROUGH IT..

I have tried, Sound fix, 4GB patches, Lowering all settings to minimum, Re-installing, re-downloading files from Steam, Window mode, Lowest Resolution..nothing fixes the CTDs..

The most alarming part is apparently this has been going on since release day for a good number of people and the previous fixes have been disabled by Steam/Bethesda? Really..? So the community finds a fix and the Platform/Devs disable it..

My question is am I ever going to be able to enjoy this game that I paid good money for or will Bethesda be put into the "Never again" group along with Infinity Ward?

I can't get my money back obviously..I bought retail and once its opened under US Federal Law it cannot be returned..yay..and considering its been a few months from some of the posts i've read since these random CTDs started I can assume there won't be a fix within a reasonable amount of time..

I have no other issues, the game runs smooth, I can use ultra graphics fine..its just these random crashes with no error messages..every driver has been updated to latest..directx, gpu, sound..i honestly give up trying to play it..guess my steam account just gained a 40$ worth from buying Skyrim..sigh..

Google "post a DXDiag" put it here in Spoiler tags. Nobody can guess what your system is and cant start to help without it.

You can not use the 4 GB patch ....Bethesda added that to the game for us.
Try a "Clean Boot" it removes all background programs as possible conflicts.
The "Latest" driver might not be the best for your system.

Need your specs to help any farther.......

The CTD issue has been solved by Bethesda for a number of people check the dates on the main crashes during gameplay sticky thread in contrast to patch release dates.

Heres dxdiag, all test passed on it, also when Skyrim crashes none of my games will run unless I reboot my PC, they all have a d3d_error, including old games like CSS, keep in mind only Skyrim is doing this, graphics settings have no effect on the CTDs nor is any other game affected by crashes..GTA 4 crashes once maybe every 4 hours..but i can just reboot it and keep playing, and GTA 4s crash always happens in a car going at high speed so its fairly avoidable.. when Skyrim crashes..i have to reboot pc to play anything..and its completely random, good example I was killing some bandits, ran up some steps..saw a deer..sprinted to it and sliced with my sword..crash.

The most alarming part is apparently this has been going on since release day for a good number of people and the previous fixes have been disabled by Steam/Bethesda? Really..? So the community finds a fix and the Platform/Devs disable it..
The fixes weren't disabled, they were added into the main game code. I haven't had a single ctd since patch 1.3.10 which added the 4gb fix.
I'd suggest reinstalling your drivers, perhaps reinstalling direct x 9c.

Would be helpful if you posted system specs, but from what I've seen on these forums, the main cause of CTDs and general game instability is usually traced to 4 main factors:

1) 32-bit OS
2) low system RAM (tied to #1 also)
3) low VRAM + High-res texture pack
4) Settings uGridstoload beyond 7

things you can do to help your situation in Skyrim and going forward:

1) Update to a 64-bit OS, the waters just fine.
2) add more system RAM (3GB+ if you upgrade to 64-bit OS too).
3) Upgrade to a faster GPU with 1GB+ VRAM (GTX 460/5850 or better, imo) OR disable High-Res texture pack.
4) Reduce uGridstoload to 7 or lower.

Important to note with lowering uGridstoload (if OP indeed has done it) is that it renders your savefiles unloadable.

There's an easy fix to this, I forget the exact steps but it involves:

1) loading game with higher unstable ugrid setting
2) alt-tab out of game, change .ini to lower ugridstoload setting
3) alt-tab back in, open console with tilde `
4) reload ugrids command to the new lower settings from .ini
5) save game

then just exit, re-load that game and verify everything is working.

Had a look thru your DX...ummm I would expect you to have crashing on a system that is what 5 years old?

These issues....

1) Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.111025-1629)....32 BIT ?
2) Memory: 3070MB RAM Simply not enough ram.
3) ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series Display Memory: 512.0 MB Just not enough VRAM and or Horsepower to run the game.

Not quite...

Description: Realtek HD Audio output
Date and Size: 8/27/2008 03:22:24, 4754432 bytes

Looks like your motherboard drivers are also outdated...the USB subsystem is also from 2008.
You have enough codex to choke a horse.

Sorry to say , but if all you are having is Random crashing , count your blessings and save for a new computer. The Vannila game can and will ask for 2 GB of RAM all on its own. This is without the HD DLC.

Agreed with above that the game tends to expose other weak point in the system. I used to have crashes of various sorts and it ended up being my ram timings and video drivers. Every other memeory test and benchmark utility worked flawlessly; only Skyrim crashed. Once I resolved those issues the crashes stopped. Looking at your post diag it seems you have several to contend with before blaming the game here. Bethesda cannot fix the issues with your system. Good luck.

So I would have to spend approx. 500$ to upgrade Video card, Windows 7 64bit, RAM and possibly motherboard..just to play a game that actually runs fine aside from random crashing to desktop? Really..and you bolded 32bit with a ?..Windows xp 64bit is known as the circus of bugs/glitches and is what generally gave 64bit a bad name, I have win 7 64bit disc here, 2 more gigs of matching RAM..so upgrading the GPU with adding those things would be enough maybe? 150$ for a modern video card with 1GB doesnt sound too bad..aside from completely wiping my files to install 64bit win 7

You should be able to play it fine on your hardware, just not on ultra. on low or maybe medium, it should work fine without upgrading. But I definitely do also recommend upgrading to 64bit OS and adding more RAM.

this is the way of pc gaming, i dunno why and what are you complaining about.
if this upgrade seems steep for you, because your spec really really under-par, you should stick to console platform.

Use Windows Easy Transfer to greatly simplify the process. This will back up most of your user files, savegames, documents, favorites, pretty much anything that can't be easily replaced via download or disc install: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7349

You will need a 2nd hard drive or an external USB drive however that you don't plan to format for your new Win7 install.

I Questioned the Use of a 32 Bit OS ...Because you have an x64 CPU...why hamstring your CPU with a 32 bit OS
XP = Dead OS
ONE crash is not stable.

Yes, going x 64 , Medium range GPU and 4-8 GB RAM will help get you stable but with that CPU you most likely will still be in the upper medium range for Graphics. Certainly not Ultra.

Make sure your Shadows are not on Ultra , even High ...they are a killer.

I built this computer while Vista was the only option, XP was far better then Vista at the time..32bit because as I said before XP 64bit is extremely buggy

So if I install 64bit Windows 7, or XP cuz I have both here, and adding my extra RAM which I also have would stop CTDS? I don't care running the game on medium settings as long as crashing stops because it would be a month or two before I could put back enough for GPU upgrade and honestly Id like to hold off a while on a GPU purchase..

If I upgrade to 64bit and add my 2 more GB of RAM it would set me at 5GB, would my crashing stop? I have been reading alot on issues of skyrim and 64bit with 4GB users also posted saying random CTD..

tldr: If i upgrade to 64bit and make RAM 5GB would my crashes stop? I also understand the Recommended processor is Quad Core 2.x speed, mine is Dual core 2.7..is this a worry? It passes minimum but fails recommended, and quite honestly I can't afford to purchase a processor anytime soon, unless I catch a break on rent :(

Thanks for the windows transfer thing aswell, save me alot of re-downloading if I wipe everything but I will prob just partition HD and dual boot to save all my files on XP 32bit while having 64bit for Skyrim and w/e else..

I just want the crashes to stop, I don't need the game as 100% MAXIMUM settings, just to be able to actually play it would be nice, what all do I need to do to just be able to play without crashing, I don't mind lower graphic settings as long as the crashing quits and I can play longer then 40 mins and not have to spam the quicksave button

Also its funny that Skyrim keeps auto detecting my settings and putting it at Very High everytime I run launcher..any reasons it always runs auto detect? I have to manually change it everytime I run the game, maybe crashes are messing with save file on launcher?

edit: i fixed the auto detect..I ran launcher, set it to medium overall, ran game and exited game before crash and it appears to have stopped auto detecting graphics now

You probably won't even need to add more RAM, but it will be helpful for sure. The biggest thing is Skyrim will be able to address up to 4GB of addressable space whether that is virtual memory or physical system memory. The problem with 32-bit OS is that Skyrim "needs a bigger boat" than what 32-bit offers.

64-bit won't make your game run better or faster, you'll still be limited by that CPU primarily, then your GPU, but it should cut down your CTD significantly. Instead of a CTD you'll just get a variable lurch/stutter as your HDD thrashes trying to load new textures and data. Quad core isn't a significant benefit or concern because Skyrim is limited to dual core affinity; although more cores are useful in general computing, multi-tasking and some other games. Increasing number of cores isn't enough, you want the fastest possible cores too.

Long-term you'll want to look at:
  • 1) Drop-in replacement for CPU or complete platform upgrade (and presumably more RAM).
  • 2) Upgrade GPU with 1GB+ VRAM.
  • 3) Faster storage subsystem, ideally an SSD.

Do what you can within your means/budget or save up for a big upgrade, you should see noticeable results with each incremental upgrade. Skyrim runs like a dream on capable hardware after all the tweaks and patches, 4GB, and 1.4 x86 extension updates. I run this game in stereo 3D with FPS capped at nearly 60 most of the time. 3D stereo is roughly 2x the rendering requirements as normal 3D/2D. The only time I had CTD or stability issues was when I increased ugrids to 9, since I scaled it back down to 7 its been great again.

What about AMD's APU's? Quad core 2.7ghz Radeon 6530 1GB Vram, apparently they are CPU+GPU in one chip. 120$ and they are on a combo deal with motherboards, all for roughly 180-210$ depending on which MB

And like a 16-32GB kingston SATAIII SSD Internal drive 35$-70$?

RAM, I have 2GB spare matching laying here in static case..so 5GB would be plenty or worth spending 30$ on 2 more GB?

Those work? I don't know how these APU's work being the processor and vid card put togather..sounds formidable tho, DirectX 11, 1gb vram, dual monitor support, not bad for intergrated? (i was under the impression intergrated video cards svcked)

I could live with this budget over a month or two..the SSD would be small but for Skyrim 16-32GB be alright? The "intergrated" gpu has me worried but honestly it sounds decent

Game runs great with 32-bit OS and 3GB memory!
But I have a 1GB vidcard and run modest settings (high).
Your 3GB memory must be 4 chips: 2 x 1GB plus 2 x 512MB.
I'll bet anything this is the source of your instability.
If you are pushing this memory (MHz) or accepting the default speed (from SPD) but pushing the timings, it's a bad plan.
Your rig is okay, not hopeless - but ideally you'd have 4GB RAM from 2 matched sticks, run nice and loose.
I had a HD4870 (1GB), good vidcard, too bad you have 512MB.
Grab something like a GeForce 560 or whatever you can afford with 1GB, would be the single biggest improvement you could make.
Don't OC the CPU or system RAM, and clean your cooling.
Try to get the stock game running solid and nice.
Downloading all these wierd internet 'fixes' will not make your game solid, which you crave.

I have tried, Sound fix, 4GB patches, Lowering all settings to minimum, Re-installing, re-downloading files from Steam, Window mode, Lowest Resolution..nothing fixes the CTDs..

Of course it will crash if you install a 4GB patch coming from outside Bethesda

For your information, the lattest steam patch suppoprt 4GB anyway

Now the tricky part. If you attempt to run with setting that are beyond the capacity of your machine, it will behave like you described. You can accomplish that amount of crashing by playing on ultra on a machine too weak for it (my machine is 1 year old, verry powerfull, and still too weak for it, at least with high res pack and max distance)

Now, you can increase the crashing frequency by shooting yourself in the foot, I mean by tweaking your INI files to get unsupported draw distances, trying to get 1 million trees to show up, using textures pack that go beyond bethesda high res pack in footprint (I ve seen some mods using textures 10x bigger !!! garanteed crash unless you bought a new souped up machine worth 10,000 $ recently, like next week or so)

In other words, you might be the culprit

THE SOLUTION

1. uninstall completly, zapp everything
2. make sure your machine is stable, virus free, and check hardware manufacturer for lattest and best optimized drivers for your game (Skyrim). Sometime they do specific release for specific games. check it out. I got one for skyrim on my card.
3. reinstall fresh from disk (check guide)
4. get the patches from steam (automatic)
5. DO NOT GET THE HIGH RES TEXTURES PACK (yes, bethesda pack - not just yet anyway)
6. see what settings the game propose - maybe high. maybe medium. leave it untouched
7. play at least until you reach whiterun, see if it is stable
8. HINT: this mean use the cart guy to visit markath, windhelm, solitude, etc... everything,
and mark those locations for fast travel (by entering those cities)
this also include the small holds like falkreath, morthal, etc
9. this is not a real game, just a stability test run
10. now that you got all markers, travel to each city using fast travel, and run through it as fast as you can. especially markath
do this a couple time, be nasty, like go inside and outside all buildings to increase the stress, and keep running to try to choke your graphic card.
try to hang a candlelight spell arround you or to throw magelights and clairvoyance
11. is it stable ... or is it crashing ....
12. if it is stable you can try increasing the load a bit, like EITHER get hires pack OR increase to the next level (from high to ultra)
high settings + high res testures may look better than ultra settings + vanilla textures
13. some hints about instability: seing purples ghostly colors on trees, mountains, armor pieces ... it means it can t load the texture
this would mean that setting is beyond your machine capability. also if water suddenly disapear and a lake seems to get dry but fishes are swiming in the air.
thats a clear symptom of a chocking graphic card.

That s weaker than what I got. I think that explain your instability.

I got i5 + radeon 6800 series. (mid level, not top level). got the machine for only 1000$ over a year ago. 8 gb ram, 1 terabite hd (video recording quality, so verry fast, meant for home theater), windows 7 ultimate 64bit edition . had to get some fancy drivers for the card and audio to stabilize (oficial radeon drivers, but gamer release, a link was posted in the forum here) . no sure how much vram I got, but I understand it can also use shared memory from my cpu, so it s probably 2 gb native vram + whatever it needs from the cpu. the strenght of your gpu matter even more than its vram (which is usually dictated by the era in which its realeased, and rarely an issue). also get a good boad. I always get asus.

32 gb drive .... are you a time traveler, that seems weak by today standard. even 5-10 years ago, it was already in the many 100 gb.

anyway. the rule with computers. don t be cheap. but dont upgrade too often. and when you do, get a new computer, because performance come from the whole, and pluging a new card in an old board don t do much. and today everything computer-wise is ridiculously cheap, it used to cost 2000-5000$ sometime up to 10,000 $ for crazy peoples. today it s like 500$ - 1000$ and a few 1000$ for crazy peoples. got to try hard to go above 4000$. so don t be cheap. it s an investment. you can recover your loss by using your computer to do your budget 8D

OP just a tip since I have had issues after each patch my deal went like this and I changed nothing in regards to hardware since release:
Release Version to Patch 1.3: Random CTD's
Patch 1.3 to 1.4: Less but still a few random CTD's
Patch 1.4 to Present: 0 CTD's

However after every single patch even the smaller ones I always ran into some issue or other be it graphical or whatever right after each patch. So my protocol for playing is leave steam offline so that the game doesn't ninja patch on me. Back up my saves after every play period. On top of that I do an complete uninstall of Skyrim including my registry and then do a reinstall after a patch. I must say this is annoying but it does work 100%. So before you buy anything I would say do that as well as set your CCC back to default and leave it that way (the only thing I would recommend is to force v sync on if it isn't already). Give that a shot and let me know what happens.

Wow, just wow. everyone going on and on about ppls specs not being up to par, shame on you. If you take the time to read most of the posts about ctding you would see that it doesn't matter what there rig setup is. Hell my wife's rig falls in the under par catagory and she hasn't had a single freeze sinse doing the 32 bit large texture access. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=4192

In my case my skyrim worked just fine til the 1.4 patch. and the 1.3 patch I didn't have one single ctd or freeze. I played up to 375 hours, finisheds 2 characters and modded the crap out of skyrim. now I get all the crap ctding and freezing alot of ppl have been posting about.

Lets face it, these damn patches may fix issues for some ppl it breaks the game for others. Yes this could be due to different systems but damn it, if you spend millions of dollars programming a game it should freakin run on any system that meets there damn requirements.

A gpu is a freakin gpu etc. I spent $2k on a new pc just to play skyrim.

I could go on for hours about what i've done and how much time i've spent trying to fix everything that is wrong with skyrim after patch 1.4.
Sinse patch 1.4 i've spent more time trying to fix the game then playing. That's just messed up.
