Over here we are more likely to say Oblivion, since it is the Oblivion forum. But I shall try my best to weigh up both.

I personally have the Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition, and to be honest, I really do prefer Oblivion. I just don't like the game in Fallout, I find it too hard and there's no real excitement for me. Everything seems a bit grey and brown in Fallout, and I know it's supposed to be like that, but when you've wandered in the Great Forest or swam in Lake Rumare on Oblivion, nothing else can really compare.

Obviously if you like both games, you need to decide which gives the best extras for the money. I bought Fallout 3 GOTY pre-owned from a shop called Gamestation, and it was fairly cheap, about £8-10 I think. The GOTY version and the normal were the same price, so I went for the GOTY. I didn't think the price for that was bad at all.
You probably won't find Oblivion for the same price. I couldn't get vanilla oblivion for less than £15 in the same shop, and I've just looked and I can't find the 5th Anniversary Edition for less than £20 if you're buying the disk (I don't really know how steam and things work to be honest.)

So to sum up- I prefer Oblivion and I really like it so I wouldn't mind paying a little extra. Have you played both before (even the vanilla games) and if so, which one do you like better?

I think your poll will be slightly skewed in this forum.

My vote is for Oblivion. It's not the fact that I think it's a better game than FO3, but it's the alternate world that BGS has created. I find the history and lore (however obtuse and obfuscated it may be) intensely fascinating.

Buy Oblivion, and by the time you become "bored" with it, you'll have enough money for the Fallout series. The first three games should only run about $40.

If there's any way to do both, do so. :)

They're not really comparable, even though they superficially appear similar in gameplay. FO3 is a bit more technically perfected, meaning that they've gotten more out of the game engine, and the player development system actually works as intended. Unfortunately, it works so effectively that ultimately all characters end up pretty much the same. It's harder to develop really unique characters in FO3, given that the story line forces you down a canned "back story." Balanced against this is the fact that FO3's Main Quest is better written, with branching possibilities for "evil" or "good" characters, and it has more interesting and meaningful side quests.

On the other side, Oblivion is a more perfected "world" in which to play. It has some bugs and some design flaws (the most notorious being that the entire world "levels up" when you do, so that naively designed characters tend to get weaker as you go along, rather than stronger.) But it also has infinite replayability, because dungeons always respawn with new loot and new challenging enemies to face. FO3 fails in this latter regard, because most interior locations remain empty once "cleared."

Oblivion wins hands down as an RPG "sandbox." FO3 is probably the better "story." Get both if you can!

Fallout is an excellent game, but the game never pulled me in quite the way Oblivion did.

I would definitively say buy the The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 5th anniversary, because the Elder Scrolls series has a lot more value than the Fallout series. It has been part of what has made Bethesda's great RPG series and in my opinion greatest RPGs ever made. Fallout does not have as much of a significant value as Oblivion and what has pulled Bethesda to be such a great company. It may be fact that they made lots of money during the release of the Fallout series, but most understand that Bethesda became known as a great RPG maker from Oblivion. Although some of the longer veterans of the Elder Scrolls have played previous versions they didn't bring off sells as well as Oblivion had.

OP: do you have Oblivion GotY already? If so, then there's no need (aside from collector compulsion) to buy it. It has only SI and KotN included in the box. Same exact thing as Oblivion GotY.

Poll doesn't seem to favour it... But I'd say Fallout is the superior title. I've found a far greater level of replay in FO3 than Oblivion. At the very least I can play Fallout without feeling like levelling up is ruining the experience.

Oblivion, because I like the setting better. Although I did think that exploring in Fallout was more interesting.

Fallout 3, hands down. There is nothing like seeing the Capital Building in ruins for the first time, while hearing 50's music. It's quite chilling.

Also, the first time I heard an 8 year old tell me to [censored] off, it was also extremely gritty, chilling, and reminded me in what a horrible state the world was in. Fallout 3's atmosphere beats Oblivion's hands down.

Get Oblivion 5th Ann. Fallout 3 is a great game, and the DLC were mostly good too, but it never lasted me as long as Oblivion did. *sigh* I miss the days when I was new to the elder scrolls...

It could depend on how much of the DLC and expansions of each game you have played. Get the game with the most DLC you haven't played in this case.

Everyone who voted for Oblivion:

Did you play it before you played Fallout 3?

I was talking to some of my friends, and every friend who thought Fallout 3 was a better game, played Fallout 3 before Oblivion. I think the first time you experience a massive RPG it has some kind of effect on you, and you are closer to all the great times you've had in that game. I played Fallout 3 before Oblivion and Oblivion just doesn't feel the same. Everytime I hear 50's music I get nostalgic and remember all the good times I've had with Fallout 3.

I got them all for £6...

Also, I'll never understand some people's compulsion to buy games that they already own.

I'd rather suggest to instead save the money for the upcoming Deus Ex.

All the brown and grey in fallout 3 was depressing and I felt as if there was less to do. Get Oblivion.

Or better yet, Morrowind.
