Post » Mon Apr 11, 2011 8:46 pm

Hey, as the topic says I cant load games or start a new one, I recently had to format the computer and reinstall windows 7, however i opted for 64 bit this time around. this is the only difference from when the game worked, as far as I can tell.

After a while of loading i get this:

When you reinstalled the OS did you also grab the latest Visual C++ 2008 SP1 redistributable?

So it was working? Your able to get to the main menu? Could you explain the issue more?
Does the intro video play after you click new game? When does it crash after load, new game?

Sorry let me elaborate, the game works to the main menu, when I press for a new game, the video starts playing (and I skip it after a few seconds :P) the loading screen starts running and after a while and then the game crashes and i get prompted to search for a solution online or just closing the game. Same thing with the loading, minus the video of course.

PS: Windows update prompted me to update to C++ 2008 SP2 and it still doesn't work.

Sounds like a driver, or codec issue.

I noticed the sound drivers are from 2009. You may wish to update them.

The quick and dirt way to see if it's a codec issue is to use http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35868 to reset Windows to a default state of codecs. Make sure it, or you make a restore point first to undo if it doesn't help. This will break 3rd party programs that rely on the ones removed. Simply reinstalling them will fix that, but may break the game again.

Good luck.

You state the game was working. So it was working well (you could start new games and load recent ones) and play them?
Up until you reinstalled windows 7?

Thats right, since I had to reinstall anyway I went from Windows 7 professional 32 bit to the 64 bit version, the game worked on the 32 bit version.

Also, using the tool to remove all codecs didn't help and the audio driver is the newest one available.

Just a quick question, when you update your drivers your using 64-bit versions correct (you probably are jsut checking).
Are you having issues with other games?

I get most of my drivers from HP's homepage where they've listed them for the Windows 7 64 bit OS, based on my laptop. That and windows update, so I assume they are the correct ones.

Look in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam->GameValidation file. The failed file should be Installscript.vdf.
This is a known issue and nothing to be concerned about.

As far as your video card drivers are concerned I would go to ATIs driver download site directly.
Download their latest catalyst drivers for mobility devices. Sometimes manufacturer drivers arent always the latest.

Is your sound card onboard or expansion? If you have both then one should be disabled. Usually the onboard is disbled if you added one.
If you have just onboard then try disbling it in bios and trying the game.

Something else you might try. Change the compatibility mode for fallout 3 new vegas. Find fallout 3 new vegas in your steam directory.
Right click the main exe (falloutnv.exe) and goto the compatibility tab. Click the checkbox and try windows xp service pack 3 or other modes.
Then right click falloutnv.exe and select "run as admin".

Also you have a laptop. You have it plugged into the wall while your trying fallout 3 new vegas? Make sure there are no obscure power saving feature as well like adaptive etc.

I have the newest video driver, always did :) I have an onboard sound card and nothing else, and new vegas is designed so you cant start the game with it turned off in the bios. Comparability mode didn't work and I always play in high performance mode with a plug in the wall.

Are you installing any programs that came with the laptop - media center, media players etc.?

If yes, try unistalling these.

There havn't been installed any third party programs as far as I know, while I applicate the advice I am given on this forum and still desperately need it, I am giving up hope, and can you blame me? Over the last week or so I have been told to install the newest ATI driver, which the DxDiag file I sent them show I have, and do a clean boot, which i told them i already tried.

I recently decided to download Fallout 3, it has the exact same problem, so the issue wont be resolved by patches either I think.

I am seeing nothing in this thread other than constant miscommunication. For instance, instead of a proper 900 - 1000 MB of "Used" Page File, the DxDiag showed twice that, at 2,263. But has that ever been corrected? We don't know, it is a valid point of error. What *WAS* done while following Microsoft's directions fo using a Clean Boot to do trouble shooting? All we got back was that it "failed", not that any of that unnecessary background stuff was ever removed, or tested by itself.

It's been my thought that the game engine relied on an older version of C++ and yet when I looked through the contents of both DVDs (including Fallout 3), I didn't see any C++ runtime files at all, so that comment was apparently wrong (I don't know where my Oblivion DVD disk went, so couldn't see if there was a C++ included there).

HP (or any manufacturer) seldom makes any effort to keep drivers up to date particularly well, so we don't really know that the audio drivers really are the newest after all. In other words, the problem may have been solvable, had the thread author followed the advice instead of making excuses?

It's a laptop, and an HP one, at that. The video card may have been so badly crippled it barely worked, and something has now pushed it completely over the edge (very few laptop manufacturers adhere to the standard that AMD and / or nVIDIA offers in their tech guides, and with their sample reference cards).

Why are you worrying about all that I dont work here but I dont mind posting suggestions. Of course you cant verify that what you suggest is ever correctly or accurately performed but you can suggest it at least.
I think alot of people fail to understand that these forums arent bethesdas official tech support. They post here thinking that bethesdas own techies post here. I post suggestions and if they dont work then im sorry.

This game uses the C++ Runtime 2005, not 2008.

Fallout 3 new vegas uses vc 2008 run-times (x86).

Miscommunication sounds right - where are you getting that info from? The game disc includes the 2008 installer.

I am in the blessed situation that I dont have to ask for help with support issues very often, hence I am not very good at it, in addition I am a person with the bad habit of cutting writing to the very bone.
However, when I refered to Tech support in my last post I ment the Actual Bethesda Tech Support Team that I am also in communication with about the issue at hand.
I did not mean this forum and i would like to apologize for the misunderstanding, I assumed that people would know what I meant. I am fully aware that the help I receive here is on a voluntary basis and I do truly appreciate that people take time to provide it.

As for the "Used" Page file thing I have no idea what you're talking about.
I performed a clean-boot successfully and what I ment earlier was that doing so failed to resolve the issue.
The company who makes my sound card has denounced any and all involvement in distributing Drivers for the hardware, saying that this will only be done through the Companies that sell the hardware, HP in this chase.
Also, it is the same sound driver I used when the game was working.
And my Video card works, I play games daily which has been stated earlier.

Is there anything that anyone needs clarified?
