If you go to the North West of Solitude and go past all the ice bergs you will see a shadowy gaunt island in the distance. Was this added with Patch 1.6 or was it already there.

I actually found a very likely path that will lead to the castle. Its east of the refugee camp located on the NE of the skyrim map. Its basically an open road but it does not allow you to continue down it. If you look closer the road is covered by an avalanche which is also mention by some NPCs in towns.
