CharacterWeaponEct Model Corruption

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:03 pm

Character/Weapon/Ect Model Corruption is really the only way I know how to describe my problem.
I have gone back and forth with Steam support and all they can seem to do is copy and paste guides already posted on the forum as replys.

The problem seems to be with characters / buildings / weapons / map. The menus seem to be working just fine, no text is distorted at all and all sound/voice works as it should.

I have uninstalled all mods and even removed them completely. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Skyrim and Steam several times now. All my drivers are updated, I verified the game cache files, and I ran the three recommended Installers.

(dxsetup.exe\dotnetfx35setup.exe\vcredist_x86.exe)

I am on Windows 7 if that is important.

Though my grapics issue is very pretty, I would rather play the game on how it was/is intened to be seen lol.

A few things:

First and foremost:

1) Try uninstalling your graphics driver completely and then installing the latest stable version of the driver after a fresh download in case the one you have lying around is corrupted.

2) Wipe out the INI files in ./(My )Documents/(My )Games/Skyrim (Configuration Files with "Show file extensions" turned off) and in ./Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim/Data

3) Please post a full dxdiag in a spoiler tag and provide your PSU information as it could be an issue with your GPU.

1) I had to do that the other day, but I just tried it again. Most recent version is now installed.
2) Files are gone now.
3) I //THINK// this is what you mean lol...

Next steps:

1) Keep all your mods (yes, even texture replacers) uninstalled.

2) Run the launcher. Go to the Options pane and set everything to the lowest settings.

3) Run the game itself and start a new game. See if the problem is there.

1) All mods are uninstalled and deleted just to be safe
2) Game running in ugly mode - check
3) Even with a new game I am still getting the same problem

Yes, this is the only game that buggs.
I'm in the middle of playing Dragon Age 2 with a graphics boost and tons of mods and it works fine.
The Sims, Oblivion, MineCraft, and Dragon Age all work fine on high resolution.

Even other games on Steam work fine.

Can you run a stress test on the GPU? My gut is telling me there is something wrong with it.

Unfortunately, I don't.

However, I did find this thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1223566/best-gpu-stress-test

Not really sure which one to use out of the ones mentioned there, though.

I'm going to try Futuremark - 3d Mark 11

I just don't see how the GPU could be the problem. It was working fine one day, then the next day it was like this. The only modifications that were made to my PC in that time was adding more ram.

Ill post what results I get after running for a while.

It happens with everything. Sometimes things are defective. You just never know.

Yeah, that looks like a RAM-related prob. Like if your gfx card RAM was overclocked too far, or your system RAM was not reliable. Do you ever get BSODs? You have to have "Automatically restart" on "system failure" disabled to really see the BSOD, otherwise the computer just reboots; it is enabled in Windows by default. If the only areas in your memory mapping that was bad was in high memory addresses, you might not get the BSODs (exc rarely); just gfx corruption. I have seen this effect in my notebook (before Skyrim) that I had added expanded memory to. What's more, if is is system RAM that is the culprit, it could also corrupt all subsequent Skyrim saved games!

No problems.

Edit:

Another thing to try is to run Memtest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memtest

I'm sorry, but that just broke my brain lol.
The ram I installed only brought me up to what my computer has as listed as the max it will accept. I didn't change any of the bios or change any settings at all when I installed the ram.

I have not seen the dreaded BSoD in a looooooooooooong time.

I don't really care about the saved games. I can always get back to where I was. What matters is I can't play the game at all. If there is something wrong with my GPU or ram or anything else, why is it only effecting this game.

You can't assume the RAM you added is good. Just because it is new does not mean it is good. Prob about 0.1% (one in 1000) of all new purchases are defective. Run Memtest v4.2 http://www.memtest.org/ burn it to a CD and boot to the CD, and let it run all night. If no red on the screen in the morn, your system RAM is good. What's more, I don't know how you determined your RAM model, but if it has different latency timings or voltage it still may not run properly, unless it is installed by itself, without the old RAM. I am a hdwe guru. I have helped hundereds of ppl on the EVGA mobo forums. Computers is my middle name.

http://www.evga.com/forums/search.aspx?author=HalloweenWeed&top=500 4475 posts in that forum alone

You see those two computers in my signature ("sig") below? I built those from scratch myself, I specd out the parts myself. And I even had a bad NEW stick of memory, which I RMAd for replacement; and just a month ago I finally had more prob's W/that same set (2yr old) and retired them for a new replacement set - and haven't had a BSOD on that computer since then.

For an even better test, I would suggest LinX. If you want to try that, PM me and I will give you a link to a LinX download W/ the newest LinPack binaries (from Intel). It is basically Intel Burn Test with a slightly different interface. If you use it correctly, it gives both your CPU and memory a real workout with all the available CPU threads, and will error if there is a problem. We use it when overclocking (CPU and memory), to help certify the OC stable.

Sometimes the prob goes away just by reseating the memory. You should consider trying that too. Often ppl find out the memory was just not quite snapped in all the way, other times just the action of reseating it fixed the prob. One time I was looking at the pictures I took of my build (as I cropped them) and noticed one of the memory clips (at the end of the sticks) was not snapped in all the way. It happens to the best of us sometime.

The PC itself told me what RAM I had and what to upgrade to. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01463060#N267. If you check under the memory upgrade section it tells you exactly what to use. I went with 4 2gig PC2-5300 (667 MHz).

If this turly is a problem with my RAM or anything about the PC itself, I higly doubt the problem would isolate itself just to Skyrim. Skyrim does not alwasy have the graphics corrupted. When I load the game the graphics are fine for about 1-2 minutes then they slowly start to change this way.

Reading over stresstests focused on GPUs I have noticed that if run icorrectly or without a close watch, could cause harm to your system. The problem is isolated to Skyrim, I don't want to mess anything else up just for one game. Honestly I think I am not capeable enough to deal with such tests and should probably take the PC somewhere to have it looked at.

The tests will help tell you if you have a bad GPU.

Different games put different loads on different parts among other things. Just because an issue is in only one game doesn't mean that your hardware is good.

We've pretty much ruled out everything but the hardware itself, I do believe.

Well then, you still could do a quick and easy test: Remove the memory you added. Try running Skyrim again. If the problem does not develop, then you have determined the problem is definitely the RAM you added. Also, Memtest is NOT a stress test. You need not watch the computer for overheating or anything. It is so easy anyone who can burn a CD and set their BIOS to boot to their CD drive (if it is not already) can do it safely.

If you had requested my link to LinX (I am not pushing that), I would have given you adequate instructions and suggested you watch your temperatures with another utility. But that is fine, I understand, you don't want to, don't need to.
