Choosing a new character for my third Skyrim playthrough.

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 1:29 pm

Since I bought Skyrim in December, I've beaten the it twice.

The first time being with a male Khajiit named Mashalar (Don't ask) and the second with a Nord assassin named Roggi the Swift.. and guess what? I'm still not bored!

So the question I'm asking you guys is, what race should I choose next? My Khajiit character was a ''Jack of all trades'' really, as it was my first experience of an Elder Scrolls game and I wasn't really sure which path I wanted to follow until later on. Now my second character was what it says on the tin, an assassin. I maxed out enchanting, smithing (for daedric weapons), archery, and sneaking, with light armour, lockpicking, pickpocket, speech, alchemy and one-handed all ranging between level 60 and 95.

Now I want a change, so do you have any suggestions?

I used magicka quite a lot with Mashalar, focusing mainly on the destruction and restoration schools. I've become very interested in Illusion magic though, so perhaps I may give that a go next playthrough. I'm not sure whether I like the idea of being a Warrior. It just seems too easy really, hacking your way through a cave or ancient ruin. Having said that, I'd like to hear your thoughts on being a Warrior in Skyrim and whether it would be a good choice.

Now, to races. Which ones in your opinion are the best? I personally think bosmer and dunmer are really cool races, but I hate the altmer and their snobby personalities. Redguards also look pretty cool, being the only black race in the game. I'm still unsure though guys. I need to make a decision!

What I've played thus far:

Anya Surilie. Female Breton. Pure Mage. College of Winterhold. Bards College.

Daral Berethi. Male Dunmer. Rogue, DW Daggers. Dark Brotherhood. Daedric Quests.

Dular. Male Orc. Warrior 2H Sword. Main Quest. Blades. Orc strongholds.

Onyx. Male Khajiit. Rogue 1H Sword and Bow. Thieves Guild.

Raven. Female Breton. Forsworn DW Sword and Axe. Markarth. Imperial Legion.

Svenja. Female Nord. Warrior 1H Sword and Shield. Main Quest. Companions. Stormcloaks.

Eric. Male Nord. Warrior 1H Axe and Shield. Light Armor. Companions. Explorer - been everywhere.

(old list actually so you can add a few more)

As you can see I generally role-play a more focused character.

I actually like the Light Armored, Sword and Shield, Nord warrior type in Skyrim. Shield bash is fun. Just Perk it up a little and I'd rather bash something than use my sword. It certainly makes playing a warrior more interesting.

I'm playing a Heavy Armored, Two-Handed, Nord warrior now and ... yeah it does get kind of boring. Combat is basically run up and smash. The occasional kill-cam makes things a little more interesting I guess.

Your decision is your own first off. And all races are cool to me and you can be aby race with any class. Redguard get a stamina regen for their racial power so thats something to note for a warrior. If your thinking melee warrior then dunmers arent bad becuase they have a flame cloak. IDK its really up to you how and who you build.

Wow man that's a lot of saves! I take it you play on PC?

What you said at the bottom is what I'm afraid of, I don't want to put 4 or 5 hours into something completely different such as a heavy armoured, warrior build and end up hating it. I find the rogue build much more exciting, because sneaking through an ancient ruin can be quite challenging and enjoyable at the same time, though once your sneak is high enough, you can basically walk right through a cave without alerting or harming anyone, which gets kinda dull. Gah, I don't know!

Which race specialises in Illusion magic by the way? That's something I really want to try this time

They don't.

Bretons and Altmer have natural magic boosts but whatever race you play will be able to evolve into a successful illusion caster.

It's how you spend your leveling points and perks and the decisions your character makes that shape their destiny.

You should do a Stealthy Mage. It's a lot of fun, and very playable at higher difficulty.

I'm playing a Breton that's skilled in Illusion, Destruction, Conjuration, Alchemy, Sneak, Marksman, and Light Armor.

- Illusion gives me Invisibility, Muffle, and Quiet casting. This is important because if you're playing on Expert or Master you need to get the drop on your enemies. Also, quiet casting plus Frenzy is supremely awesome!

- Sneak... see above.

- Conjuration gives me Bound Bow, which is as good as base Daedric with the Mystic Binding perk. Also, a Summon spell plus Invisibility has saved me a number of times.

- Marksman enhances Bound Bow

- Destruction is much more effective with quiet casting, plus I use a Fortify Destruction potion for the more intense battles.

- Alchemy mostly for healing and fortify skill potions, I poison for certain enemies though.

- Light Armor, because I would always forget to cast Mage Armor, or it would run out when I needed it most.

Right now im doing something similar to Nero Joe. I am a dunmer that is less civilized than an imperila born dark elf. My main focus is evil magic. Comjuration, illusion, and specifically fire spells. Im eventually throwing in enchanting. I use a little bow ann sneaking and when i get found i use magic in my left and a sword in my right. Its fun so far.

Yeah I know you can max it out anyway, I just wanted to know which race is naturally gifted in Illusion, you've answered that for me anyway, cheers.

That sounds interesting, I think I'm going to go with a stealthy character again, with the inclusion of Illusion spells! Best get to it then!
