Cities Lacking

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 2:35 am

Cities just don't have that special feeling like the Imperial City. I love how it had the different districts and the Arcane University is nice as well. Everything just felt "bigger" to me in Oblivion.

Well, on one hand that would make sense. Skyrim is a harsh land and a province(spelling?). On the other hand... It can feel pretty sparse. I haven't been to every hold capital yet. Whiterun is still my favourite so far. It's so friendly.

The Imperial city wasn't that impressive.
It was full of useless NPC's and houses with bugger all in them. Solitude is a much better city in this regard and probably on par size wise.

Vivec, was a good city. The hardware at the time was a big limitation but they did Vivec really well.

I think the love for the IC stems from allot of people who played TES with Oblivion for the first time.

Solitude isn't close in size. It was cool having all of the districts in the IC.

But only really two of the districts were of any use to the player the rest was fluff that you need NEVER take any notice off. What is the good of that?

And I'd argue that Solitude is pretty close size wise.

And yet you seem to squeal praise over possibly the WORST edition to the series?

The probably has to do with Imperial city being... well the Imperial city, the main hub of the empire, it's capital, probably the biggest city of all Thamriel.

If anything it looked too small for that.

What do you mean? Check my history. I've had nothing but good things to say about all of the previous games. Daggerfall is my favorite. I just don't "squeal" praise for Oblivion. Where'd you come up with that?

I agree.

For the capital of the continent, it was tiny. And had nothing in it. A half dozen shops, tiny arena and ONE temple?
The white gold tower was a joke too IMO, Half of it was inaccessible by normal means.

@Main event - I appologise, I'd mistaken you for another member. Its quite late here.

Dude, you're doing it wrong, if you are a vet, or just played the old games you must hate all the new ones.

It's a law or something.

I like the cities. They all have different architecture and feel to them.

You're trying to justify a design limitation by the use of lore... that's cute. The truth is that they're trying to do the best they can do with a outdated engine and an outdated platform.

Cities in Skyrim make me think more of the Lord of the Rings, especially Jarl quarters being Edoras throne rooms.

You forgot the bit about the horribly optomised coding too. Its almost a Bethesda trade mark. (I remember when Morrowind wind butt secksed top of the line PC's for no apparent reason until it got a couple patches.)

Once you've seen one Jarl, you've seen them all.

Beth should introduce generic NPC's, like Citizen of Solitude etc., roaming about the cities with some generic houses that might not be accessible where they all live(Something like what daggerfall does is tell you that there is nothing of value in the house when you inspect the door). Part reason why cities are so small and lacking population is part due to every NPC being unique aside from the guards. Personally I wouldn't mind some more life even if it means that there there are more generic NPC°s. But Skyrim itself is a pretty small province so adding oversized cities might not be that good after all. .. Just something to consider for next TES.

I dont mind the cities that much, they're could've been more stores added to them but i understand its not the Imperial City where there should be dozens of stores lined up. I truly love Markarth tho. probably my favorite place to be out of all skyrim. Side note tho about the little villages. they could've diversified them a bit more.

Obviously.
What's wrong with trying to make it make sense 'story-wise'?

Nothing 'cute' about it.

Solitude has as many shops as the IC did. Not counting double ups in the IC (who needs four traders of totally useless garbage?)

Same place the rest of the Magic in Skyrim went. (straight up its own coitus)

As for the book shops - That is one thing that is missing from Skyrim in general. I don't think there is a single library in the game.
