Clearing Out Quarry Junction

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 5:37 am

I used Armor-Piercing Rounds with the Sniper rifle and Light Machine Gun. When the alpha female came, she found how painful three high-explosive missiles from Annabelle are. I used a mod to have all companions except Boone and Rex as meat shields, so I guess I don't get full credit. After the fight, I found that I'd forgotten to put on my armor, so that means I killed 10 deathclaws with a DT of 0!

So how did you do it?

Guns characters: Sneak-sniping with the AMR loaded with Match rounds with a Riot Gun loaded with Slugs in reserve just in case one actually got close enough to be a problem. Took zero damage.
Energy Weapons: Sneak-Sniping with the YCS-186 loaded with MC rounds with a fully-modded Gatling Laser loaded with MC rounds for emergencies. Again, took no damage.
Explosives: Annabelle loaded with modded HV rounds and having all 3 ranks of Demolition Expert. Had no backup weapon and never needed one, as they never got anywhere near me.

Have not tried with a perked-out Melee or Unarmed character, but the results would likely be similar save for dealing with the Mother, as she has 3 more Deathclaws in attendance.

1 - All Boone, I never fire a shot.
2 - Me & silenced Sniper Rifle from distance
3 - Me w/silenced 12.7 pistol and Boone at my back

I've read you can do it with the Unique BB Gun too, so...y'know...all depends on tactics and planning/any foreknowledge. One day I'm going to try it with a lot of C-4 and mines or something. For the giggles. :)

I don't use companions because I prefer to be the lone wolf. They just die all the time or run off and do stupid things and make me have to reload my save. I use em when I need to do their quests but that's all...

Anyway, I went to the quarry with my AMR with Match ammo, got hopped up on more chems than the fiends, and started head shotting the first 2 I saw. I worked my way along the right side of the quarry and went up on top of some sort of machinery that you can walk up. I put frag mines along the walkway in case the Deathclaws made it to me and I even had some C4 right underneath me. The C4 was my plan C, if they were going to take me out then they were coming with me!

I started sniping all that I could see in the quarry, killed the alpha male and female pretty easily but then the babies and 2 or 3 regulars came out me. I pulled out This Machine with .308 JSP loaded and kept firing until there was nothing left. Didn't have to use up any of my frag mines and I fortunately didn't have to blow myself up with the C4.

The Deathclow Promintory is a whole different story though.....

I've only managed to do it with an AP-loaded suppressed sniper rifle and normal-mode companion-meatshields. My hardcoe-mode unarmed guy never did manage to pull off quarry junction, even with the ballistic fist and uber perks (Super Slam et al) I couldn't pull it off.

Boone is and always will be a hero for saving me from the Alpha Male during my first succesful crack at it. It leapt from high off a rock and was an inch from decapitating me when the most wonderfully dramatic VATS slo-mow framing I've ever seen kicked in (I wish I had a screenshot) and Boone took its head off with his hunting rifle. The man comes alive in quarry junction.

I think the Quarry is somewhat overrated... on my first playthrough I went there with the AMR, ordinary ammo, and headshotted everything from stealth. I did have 100 guns and sneak, but I didn't even know there were such things as a 'deathclaw alfa' and 'mother' etc. until I started searching the bodies.

Although I don't know how it would go with my current character with his 12 or so sneak. Gotta go find out, I guess.

Trail Carbine and SWC rounds. Sneak attacks to the head at range. If you don't score the head shot on the sneak attack, the other 7 rounds you have loaded will drop the target before he gets to you.

Hunting Rifle with JSP rounds loaded will almost pull off the same thing. Need a backup weapon to finish off the angry wounded deathclaws. A Modded Cowboy Repeater loaded with JFP ammo does nicely here.

Scoped laser rifle with focus optics. Ed-e and Raul helped too I guess...

Just did this last night. Only thing that got me was a baby.
Scoped Trail Carbine for sniping.
Brush Gun for close quarters.
Thump Thump against the babies.

Level 32, 100 guns, explosives and sneak. Easy-peasy.

I forgot to do it at an earlier level, to be honest. It's a lot more fun if it's challenging. Did it at level 10 once and it was epic. At level 32 it's just sort of workmanlike.

finally got around to it at level 30 with 77 sneak 100 energy weapon with a fully modified holorifle with scope and all fully repaired with about 700 energy cells or micro fusion cells, cant recall what it used. I two shotted the deathclaws, one shot sneak critted them from a mile away. Alpha male took maybe a clip and died on approache. Female took 5, maybe 6 shots? also died on approach. Took all her eggs and went on to wipe out the blind deathclaw nest. I'm going to have to decide which factions I'm going to kill off soon.. I'm running out of targets lol.

I used the Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle from an extreme distance, they never saw me. But I was really short on .308 rounds for the rest of the game.

My wife used the Ratslayer to get an individual Deathclaw's attention then switched to the Q-35 matter modulator when it got close.

It is rather overrated- if you're a ranged-weapon specialist of some sort. Not much challenge when they can never reach you up on your clifftop (or in this case crane-top) perch.

Trying it with Melee or Unarmed is a vastly different story, though, since they actually get to attack you back and can do a metric crapton of damage with each hit, especially the Alpha and Mother. Even the best Power Armor won't help, as they get bonus damage (it's resistible, but you can't get enough resistance to actually matter) that bumps their output high enough to overload even massive amounts of DT. Personally, I wouldn't even attempt it with a Melee or Unarmed character unless he/she was perked out and packing a Ballistic Fist (Unarmed) or Thermic Lance (Melee) and a whole pile of chems and healing supplies. Stacked +HP food items could also work if your Survival skill is fairly high, although you need to time their consumption so as to not waste the benefits.

All it takes is a brush gun. Quarry Junction isn't even the biggest deathclaw camp.

It's only dangerous if you're not prepared. But I think that's the point.

Actually, now that i think about it, it could be done with the ratslayer. I remember cleaning up the big group of strays down the long 15 after Sloan with it. As long as you only aggro one at a time and leave enough distance to plink away at it before it reaches you.

Cleared the whole thing out with the gobi and hand load rounds, it was pretty cool but it wasn't exactly the challenge I thought it was gonna be.

Lets face it once you get high level go guns or energy weapons and get a good sniper rife anything in the open is pretty easy save for those spazzy cazadors that move so much. Most things can easily be sniped without incident.

True, I just used a silenced sniper rifle and got sneak critical headshots everytime. Even if you miss with the silencer you can take em one at a time

First time around was almost straight out of Goodsprings, sniping with a scoped Varmint Rifle and a ton of 5.56mm Surplus. It took about three days game-time. Almost died of thirst, it being Normal hardcoe difficulty. What a schmuck.

Last time, punched them all on Very Hard hardcoe with a Ballistic Fist, jumping onto the dragline for occasional safety (and the odd nyer-nyer.)

Stealthed in, laid C4 explosive, frag mines, got to high ground and used the good old Brush Gun to finish off. (Left my companions outside the quarry).

I went in with a Super Sledge and a crap ton of Stimpaks, psycho Med-X and 2 companions, one was Boone. Whenever I face fast Opponents, I always swing my Sledge but run backwards. I was a fairly high level with a lot of endurance. I hid up a giant thing so the Deathclaws had to come up and get me while Boone would pick them off. It is possible to pick them all off under level 10 by hanging out near a cliff on the far right outside of Quarry Junction trying to run to the Strip, as long as you have bullets because the Deathclaws can't get up the cliffs.

I'd highly recommend the Anti-Material Rifle with .50cal Incendiary Rounds. MANUALY aim for the head from an elevated/concealed position.

I'd recommend having the upgraded ED-E as a follower. The rest are simply to weak or die too fast.

Even though .50cal BMG bullets are expensive, using a different weapon will require a sh*tload of ammo, and thus, it will maybe even be more expensive.

Again, AIM! Try to not use V.A.T.S. In medium to long range, you're better off using your own sticks, as the targeting system fails 85% of the time, even at medium range.
Maybe at close range, but that's a situation you should try to avoid.

You guys seem to complicate things a little too much. I just ran in there with This Machine around level 25. Did the same for the promotory. Never got around to Wind Cave on the first playthrough.
