Are we seriously nitpicking this badly?
I fail to see how complaining about something that changes the atmosphere of the game qualifies as "nitpicking". Nitpicking would be something like complaining that the tone of Marcus' skin is slightly different from what it was when he was first introduced or that the proportions of power armor are slightly off, the in-game lighting, adding weird tints to the graphics, and other such things will impact the overall feel of the game, so it seems a pretty reasonable thing to complain about to me.
Perhaps. But it's not just petty criticism against FNV is what set me off. It's that I've heard this argument against many, many different games now. It seems that whenever any game that takes place in a war zone or a similarly destroyed or desolate environment (Borderlands, Gears of War, Mercenaries, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Wolfenstein, etc), there will always be a critique (even professional ones by people who actually get paid to write these articals) who always point out that the game's environment has too much brown, gray, or whatever. Well... it's a war zone, and a war zone done up in multicolor psychedelic pastel colors looks horrendously out of place. Thinking back on it now, there was actually a World War 2 era game that came out a long time ago that actually did find excuses to bathe the battlefield in weird multicolor lighting as if you were in a disco. It didn't work, at all, and sure enough critics jumped all over that.
There's a very big difference between giving objects realistic colors, or at least what game developers seem to THINK are realistic colors (I guess game developers don't go out much considering that they seem to think that brown and gray are the only colors that exist in the real world, and red too, I guess, but only in blood...), and adding an entirely unnatural tint to the lighting in the game, the former is what most of the games you mentioned do (Except maybe Borderlands, but the graphics of that game are intentionally unrealistic so it doesn't bother me if the color pallete doesn't entirely fit reality.) What Fallout 3 did. I don't expect New Vegas to have bright pinks and greens everywhere, no one asks for that, I just want normal, realistic colors, not some kind of magical unnatural tint to the lighting. You can talk about atmosphere all you like, but if the character designs and such are all designed in a realistic style, I expect this in the choices of colors, lighting and such as well, after all, i
War zones don't magically cause an unnaturally colored haze to appear on everything.
Luckily I will have the PC version and someone will make mod to get rid of the ugly ass colour tints and bloom.
You don't need a mod to get rid of bloom, the game DOES have graphics options...
