Companion entering interior cell problem

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:02 pm

i made a little house near the 188. usually i tell Veronica to stay put outside when i play test it cause i don't want her bumping into things and getting in the way. this last test i forgot to do that and she followed me, only she didn't.

she follows me up the step to the door. i enter the interior cell and shes no where to be found, but when i leave shes not outside the door. while sitting there puzzled as to what happened she came running over a hill. after more testing i found out that she doesn't come into the interior cell with me, and when i leave she somehow appears about 200 meters away near some cliffs.

theres no doors over there, and my teleport references are good, so this has confused me.

anyone got any ideas why this is happening?

thanks

First thing is, make sure you've done the basics right. Your door has to be linked into the navmesh correctly etc. to have a chance of it working right. Do you know how to do that?

followers + load doors can be... troublesome.. so yes I have lots of sense of what COULD be happening, but, if you didn't go through the motions of correctly linking your teleport door etc it won't work period.

*blink*...crap...i forgot about navmeshes entirely, and i made my interior by duplicating another interior and ended up just scrapping everything in it and rebuilding it from scratch, so there was a floating random navmesh off in the eather.

thanks for that. mustn't forget about Navmeshes in future

I'm going to steal your thread because I have a similar problem :)

I made a small vault with 2 doors, navmeshed it thoroughly (well, 4 times actually, I kept messing up!), and finalized it.
When I go in the front door, my followers appear right next to me as they should. But when I enter the back door, they are nowhere to be found! They aren't in any part of the building. If I wait for an hour, they appear next to me.
I've got 2 green triangles near each entrance, which I understand is the point where the followers spawn, is that right?
Is there anything else I need to do beyond finalizing?

Did you finalise the exterior near the back door again after changing the interior?

Hmm, I think I did, but I'll double check.
I hadn't, but it hasn't fixed the problem. The problem is inside the building, not outside.
It also only seems to happen when all the doors are open between the front and back doors. When I first go into the Vault, and all the doors are closed, they spawn right next to me where they are supposed to.

@Azmodeus
Your problem sounds like the navmesh on the !outside! has no new door information (green triangle near the new door) . As Talkie already wrote try to finalize it on the outside.

Nope, it didn't fix it. I had to delete at navmesh that was already placed there by the developers, and then put down my own navmesh triangle before it would accept it was the closest and make it turn green. Followers are still not turning up in the right place though.

If I understand you correctly your Vault is one cell that has two doors to the same worldspace? While working on DCInteriors, I found having two doors that enter the same cell or, worldspace can cause issues with followers. They seem to always use the first door you've entered, run off or get themselves lost. I never found the reason for this. The only solution I've come up with was to break interiors up into two or more cells depending on how many exits you want or, need.

Try adding a small airlock type room off of your back door to see it this solves the problem. I haven't modded much in FNV yet so I don't know for sure if the problem sill exists but, it's worth a shot.

Actually, that could very well be the problem. I originally had my Vault broken up into 2 cells (the main part called 'Personal Vault', and storage area). The problem was, the back door entered into the storage area, so when you look at the 'door' (in this case a manhole) out in the world it showed up as "Weapon Storage and Firing Range". To stop that, I put it all in on cell.

Maybe use a small peace of metro tunnel a ladder to access the manhole and, a door to enter your vault as your second cell. This would feel right since your entering a manhole anyway.

Are you still having the freeze issue from your other thread? If you want a second set of eyes send me a PM and, I'll get you my email address. I'll try to reproduce the issue and, check your navemeshing.

The idea of having the back entrance was so it could be right next to the storage room, for quick dropoffs of weapons etc. It's a constant battle of style vs practicality.

The freezing problems have been fixed. I found out that selecting 'Automatic Door' was the cause. I don't know why, but I guess it just means my doors won't be automatic :(
