Confirmed Bachelor/Cherchez le Femme

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 11:58 pm

So far, my best experiences in NV have been due to the Confirmed Bachelor perk. I was able to get Manny to open up more about his...relationship with Boone in Novac and I was able to ask a NCR trooper at the Mojave Outpost if he wanted to be my...friend. Unfortunately, the NCR has a don't ask, don't tell policy (jerks) but maybe we'll meet up in NV when he's on leave. As a gay gamer, its always been a challenge to find characters and story-lines that I can really get into because most games are written with a hetero-slant. Its difficult for me to really care about the love interest in most action games these days because its some busty, curvy chick but at least in the Mojave Wasteland I have the opportunity to find pixellated love. Along with most everyone else, I am having my share of difficulties with the game too. I've had crashes on loading screens and even on barter screens and one time a nightkin with a minigun tried to riddle me with bullets but apparently forgot to load his weapon. The animation and sound for the gun firing played but no bullets, no damage. Made for an easy quest but not very realistic. But despite these issues, I will press on to see who else out there in NV I might be able to have....friendships with.

I'm all for this and am glad to hear not only that it's included in the game, but that it's appreciated by gamers of all persuasions.

Going a step further, it might be fun to test the mettle of a lot of straight gamers by asking them to um, play for the other team, (and vice versa of course) in the hopes of advancing a quest, unlocking something, etc.

OMG, that'd be awesome! IIRC, there's a guy in NV who's confirmed as gay, maybe he has a....proposition for all you straight boys out there. :)

I'm straight, but I'll do a playthrough like that :)

Glad to hear they thought of putting things like this in the game. It's so overlooked these days!

I'd do it. But just once. You know, just to see what it was like.

Don't miss Dragon Age, then. Straight and gay options for both genders...

Oh I know, Zevran and I are well acquainted with each other. I really wanted to get it on with Alistair though, especially since a lot of the dialogue options you have with him throughout the game are flirty or flattering, but alas no. I played on ps3 so I wasn't able to flip his switch with a mod.

"Have you licked a lamppost in the winter"? I took that literally, not symbolically :P

Anyway nice of them to include stuff like this too, but why as perks? Shouldn't they be traits ;) I'm straight but all of my characters aren't. Of course they're all women, so it's :hubbahubba: either way :D

I agree completely - we had a a similar thread about this on our Alpha Protocol boards awhile back. While it's easier for me to 'project' into a prebuilt (as with many action games) male avatar with a female love interest or whatever, in an RPG where I develop my own character, it becomes much more difficult, and downright impossible if my only romance options are male.

Don't miss Dragon Age, then. Straight and gay options for both genders...

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that "gay" characters in Dragon Age are not actually gay; they simply have romance options regardless of the player's gender?

Fallout: New Vegas has characters that are actually, well, gay - there's something very superficial to me about having all characters be either straight or "bi" (in the gameplay sense) simply so all romance options are available (equally so when 'gay' characters don't exist in the world outside of romance options). While I understand and appreciate this with regard to player experience, it reduces the meaningfulness of the character's personality to me as someone who is actually gay.

Anyway, glad you guys like those perks - Cherchez la Femme is without question my favorite Fallout perk. :) (Here's a tidbit for you - when Josh and I were discussing the 'gay' perks, he originally thought of calling it "Practical Shoes.")

Thanks for the input Mustang, always nice to get developers on our side. Ya, about Dragon Age, Zevran and Leliana are bi (Zevran especially so) and there isn't any indication of meaningful gay/lisbian relationships in the wider world. It will be great to find those in NV. I like 'Practical Shoes' for lisbians; maybe 'Girls Gym Coach' was too obvious? Then o'course we would have to be 'Male Hairdresser' or something suitably camp.
