Confirmed level cap increase in DLC?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:27 am

The reason Im capped out already is because I got the DLC bug on my character that had over 90 hours, and my only non corrupt save was 25 hours in. So at first I decided to just wait for the patch. But then decided I shouldnt wait because it isnt confirmed yet that the patch will actually recover the saves, and might just possibly prevent it from happening again. So I bit the bullet and started playing the 25 hour save being very careful to stay away from anything that might even have a .01% chance of corrupting another. So for the most part Ive been just wandering the wastes, exploring. And just from that Ive capped at 30. So it would be nice if the DLC raises to 40. Ive read an interview with Senior Designer Chris Avellone about the DLC, but it didnt mention it.

There are already mods out there that raise the cap to 100.

Wouldn't it be better instead of raising the cap, to just reduce the rate you level? Like not give you such a huge amount of XP for every little thing.

What do you think is better?

I would certainly go for the latter, since it seems that level system in both F3 and F:NV is way faster then the system used in Oblivion . . .

I think that in future, Beth should consider a EXP control, so that players can determine how fast they level. I will definitely be installing an EXP reducing mod as soon as I find one I like.

Hopefully not.
Broken Steel unbalanced Fallout 3 with it's increase in level cap.
Would not want the same thing to happen in New Vegas.

Agreed, Broken Steel or as I tend to call it Borked Steel shattered the already not quite balanced level cap in Fallout 3 (I use Borked as you really had to work to even try to make sure your different characters didn't all end up with almost exactly the same skill load out each time).

Personally I view being able to hit the level cap before the end of the game as a 'reward' for your hard work and dedication.

Me too, I have no idea why people feel it's like a punishment or bad thing to reach the cap.

Reduction of awarded xp is defiantly the way to go - a simple "divide all my xp by 2" switch on the settings page would do it.

Raising the cap in Broken Steel is what brought back to Fallout 3. It was the best decision they made regarding that game. As it stands, I'll probably do the same thing I did with Fallout New Vegas that I did with Fallout 3. I'm going to get all the achievements and then shelve it until the dlc drops. Then I'll get all those achievements and reshelve it until more dlc comes out. Without additional leveling, Fallout becomes purposeless.

Sad to hear that. Perhaps this style of game isn't for you.

(My first play of FO3, I hit the cap in under 20 hours. I played another 55 hours before I started again. I played Broken Steel once, for the story. I eventually stopped even installing it, because it broke too many things about the game - it just wasn't an improvement.)

I believe, given how Obsidian made FO:NV, there won't be a level cap increase. It would screw the game balance completely.

Well with New Vegas, you can (or at least I can) have just as much fun trying out differing character concepts as well as doing the varying factional sides of the main quest line and not to be forgotten trying out different solutions to the plethora of side quests. I would not say that Fallout is purposeless without levelling.

Personally I would say that raising the level cap with Broken Steel was the worst decision they made, but that said it's my opinion and you are just as entitled to yours as I am to mine.

Fallout 3 wasnt balanced to begin with. Raising the cap just made it even worse. FNV is still too easy at max level.

You have to be the most ____ RPG player i've ever seen.
Honestly, What kind of a ____ says "________ __________ _ _______ __ ______ _____ _________ __ _____ __ "

Should probably edit that, not very nice way to speak to people on these forums.

Yeah New Vegas becomes a cakewalk at highest level, hell, I'd like an optional feature to have the level cap at 20 instead or to only get +HP every third level instead of every level.

It has been stated in interviews and news releases that there will not be an increase in the level cap. The only way to raise levels above 30 is to add a mod that increases the cap.

Although these games are released for consoles they are basically PC games ported to these platforms. If you play on a console, you are assumed to be willing to accept the limitations your system brings to your experience.

I assumed there wouldn't be an increase because the cap was already 30 when it came out, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. It worked last time. I tried creating a new character with a different strategy and it was fun, but I was invested in my already established character. I don't particularly enjoy the looting aspects of the beginning of the game. My old character was sufficiently wealthy and I was just walking around doing quests and enjoying the story, but I couldn't help thinking if I could keep leveling I could start acting extremely ridiculous. I really wish I could strip down to my scivvies and fist fight a deathclaw, but I can't because I'd die. Wanting to play a game in a style suited to me doesn't make me an idiot. That just how I roll.

I fail to understand the penchant for wishing for a level-cap raise, the game is completely irrespective of the levels you gain except for the bonuses of the perks/SP, because I can still complete the game at level 5 or level 30. I'm at Level 16 on another replay and I already have lost interest in my levels and perk choices, or lackof, except for the +SP each level.

More levels only means +SP/+Perks, nothing else in my view.
+SP means higher/maxed out SP but we all know F:NV was "nerfed" to reduce this possibility - I can still max out the majority of my skills by simply ignoring crude ones that aren't applicable to my build.
+Perks is pointless in F:NV, FO3 I understand, because there is not that much choice and they produce a minor effect in comparison to the possibilites of FO3 perks, like all the ones that increased SP in a skill.

Please elaborate on why you need more levels, the game is the complete alter-ego of a grind.

I agree. I think if the "top" was lower and it took longer to get there it would be a big improvement.

At a guess possibly because if they are not gaining anymorelevels, then they can't get ever more powerfull or it is the levelling that keeps them interested as in they can no longer 'strive' to reach the next level and once they hit the max level the game is effectively over for them. It could also be that they want to 'perfect' their character or at least the concept behind the character and if they've not managed it by the level cap, then it looses its appeal.

I admit this is a guess/presumption on my part, as I'll happily keep puttering around regardless of whether I'm still levelling or not.

I concur with everyone that has provided an answer, I wish to answer this specifically:

I am at Level 16 currently and I have something around 94Science, 86 Lockpick, 90 Guns, 50 Repair, 90 Speech, with the exception of ERG Weapons, Melee, Unarmed, everything else is around 40. I think with a little work you can create a near-perfect character, while I know you want a perfect character is not the same, can be conceptually the same. In Normal Mode I shoot, don't need survival, don't need hand-to-hand combat or explosives, and can still create in my opinion the best SP-based character. When I reach 30 I will post my SP - if this is still going - to see if I can help people reach this point.

LOL. He obviously played through the game and dlc and enjoyed it...how can you say this style of game isnt for him? Im glad they raised the cap and added more perks too. If you hit the cap after 20 hours, obviously youre rushing right through, being that it took me about double that time. When i explored point lookout i was glad the level cap was raised. Enemies were tougher and a higher cap gave more purpose for exploring and killing enemies. If i want to be enthralled in a really good story ill read a good book or watch a movie. I play games for the constant rewards of exploring and killing enemies and even just roleplaying, but i dont think id want to play on if its just for story.
