Considering buying Skyrim but ..

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 12:18 pm

There is alot of strong opinions here both positive\negative but I have decided to focus on the positive comments as you guys wouldn't be here if this game was so bad.
But thanks for all the quick replies with your comments and information, it did really help me come to a decision, cheers! :woot: So, tomorrow, I will be playing with magic in Skyrim!

Good night!

I didn't say the game was bad. It's a guilty pleasure. You'll enjoy it, just as you do all guilty pleasures. Just don't expect to much from it like guilty pleasures.

bc he's honest, skyrim can be fun but Bethesda should e made aware of things that can be improved look how much better the writing was from fo3 to nv

Well, a different studio, Obsidian, developed New Vegas, while Bethesda Game Studios developed Fallout 3. I do agree though that New Vegas is much stronger on narrative and characterization. Where I think Skyrim shines is exploration - I think the world is really wonderful and full of interesting things to look at.

But I'm not quite sure if this game is for me.
It costs 49.99 euros on Steam. So I will not just spend that much money to figure out this game was [censored]. Right.

So maybe some of you can help me out without giving me any spoilers?!
By the way, I don't want to watch any YouTube gameplay videos you may link to me, as there might be spoilers in them.
Just in case I decide to buy this game.

I can tell you guys this much about me, I have played The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind many many years ago and I did really enjoy it.
Hm, I've seen the trailers for this game and this new one for Dawnguard!? Yeah. It does look stunning.

Could some of you perhaps describe how the combat is with magic? I really like magic in other games.
Also, how is the social interactions with other characters in the game (if you could explain without any spoilers!)?
Is the social interactions deep? Can you get married, have kids, move in a house?
Do you find strong characters in the game you grow to love\hate?

Nothing is deep in this game. So save your money.

This is the worst TES!

I was a die hard Call of Duty gamer. I went to GameStop to get Dead Island. I was looking at the games and I picked up Skyrim dude that worked there asked me if I had played it. I said Nahh he said it won't disappoint you. I bought it. I haven't been back on COD since jan!!!

Definitely.
Of the titles Bethesda has published, Morrowind and New Vegas are the strongest as far as storyline go, Fallout 3 and Skyrim involve more nonstop action and exploration with limited story, and Oblivion lands somewhere in the middle as a compromise.
Go pick up New Vegas instead, seems more your style.

Effort? No. I'm used to writing a lot.
And every single point I made about Skyrim is true, no? Or are you telling me you love the "deep" characters of Skyrim and their tales of working for Belethor at the General Goods Store?
Careful, otherwise you will have a whole load of Skyrim is perfect people on your case. ;)

Buy it.... with its flaws, its still better than, or up to the same quality of fun as any RPG on xbox, including FNV and FO3, which were decent at best. The story lines of FNV were so drawn out, and anticlimactic, its insane. Nonetheless, all were good games.

Trust me, if the people who dont think the game is good or deep, not even a fan of Skyrim, are still on its games forums, then you know automatically its an amazing game. I know for damn sure any game thats shallow and un-immersive is literally out of my entire life. And the only reason why I would waste time on its forums? The real answer is because I would be trolling, or at best, i would need attention, and to be different than the rest of the new "bandwagon" fans of TES, and stand out as a "true " critic and "hardcoe RPG enthusiast", and revel in the public opinion difference to make me feel better, thats the only reason.

Grr... Haven't you heard of Arena? Battlespire? Redguard? They were bad games - Skyrim is far, far better than them.

Social interactions are minimum.
Yes you can get married. Is this deep? No.
You can buy houses.
You do... But they are few and far between, and some of them are only hated or loved because of other aspects of their character, not how well it is written. (e.g. One follower is normally obtained early in a playthrough and takes delight in hurting themselves in interesting and entertaining ways, such as triggering the same trap in a dungeon 50 times in a row without dying)

What a logic!?

Yes, i'm on this forum, but i don't play Skyrim. I can't force myself to play it for a second time.

I'm on this forum to criticize this game. It must be criticized if we want next TES to be better.

If you are coming from Morrowind or Oblivion then magic will be a huge disappointment. I say get the GOTY edition or wait for a sale.

I'm an Oblivion player who prefers Skyrim's spell system to Oblivion. True, magic on Oblivion is superior in some respects, but the same can be said for Skyrim.

OP: I'd definitely invest in it. As someone who's played hundreds of hours on it, I can safely say its worth your Euro - hundreds of hours of exploring, quests, chatting with NPCs and immersing yourself in a huge, detailed, amazing game world. :)

Watch a few lets' plays on YouTube of random gameplay moments. You could also always buy Oblivion or Morrowind which are cheaper (if a lot more dated) games that play pretty similarly. It's a high budgeted open world game from an experienced company. It has shortfalls, but its definitely a quality product.

Wait another few months until the GOTY edition is released for lower price and with the dlc included.

That always happens.
I also have a load of "thank you for complaining about how much better New Vegas is compared to Skyrim and driving me to buy it" people in the New Vegas forums, so it's all good.

People can ignore problems with this game. But facts are facts.

Maybe Bethesda read our posts? I hope so!

After reading your post, I'm confident Skyrim will blow your mind.
I highly doubt you'll regret this purchase.
agreed 100%. but if you put in a little effort by means of roleplaying your character, you'll get a whole lot more from this game.

plus the mods,if your on pc extend gameplay by months and fix a lot of what can be improved. cheers

If you have enjoyed a TES game before, I think it's a no brainer. Although you should be aware that some old-time TES fans consider Skyrim shallow.

I agree with this guy.

I think Bethesda make really fun games and have enormous potential, but they're seriously moving into the territory of thinking all gamers are teenage boys who care about little other than super powers. Skyrim is a really fun game and the gameworld is beautifully made, but the storytelling is shocking - I'd say the worst Bethesda have ever produced. Not only do they treat the player like they're a moron, some of the quests are jaw-droppingly bad.

Welcome to Riften, home of the thieves guild...here's Mjoll going on about the thieves guild...I'm Maul, I'm going to tell you about the thieves guild...Hello I'm Brynjolf, just in case the message about the thieves guild hasn't been hammered home hard enough already, I'm going to harass you - a total stranger - to join the thieves guild. And on each and every playthrough, you will be subjected to exactly the same sequence of harassment. Don't worry if you mess up the task, I'm just desperate for you to join for no reason. And don't worry if you're not a thief - it's mostly a hack and slash questline that makes no sense whatsoever and will leave your head reeling over just how incoherent it is. Just entertain yourself trying to count exactly how many plot holes there are - see if you can collect them all! You can also console yourself with the fact this is actually the only guild you do have to put some effort into being made head of - those guys at Hogwarts in Winterhold will crown you as their boss even if you only know one spell.

If this sort of stuff isn't criticised, TES VI is going to be open world COD with swords. What I mean is, an action game - not a game that's primarily about characters and stories - the supposed lynchpin of RPGs.

Its worth the money :)
I think you will like it,The random elements and radiant story is great. Often really funny. And i am no sure about magic,I have never been a fan of magic,Many people complain about the magic in skyrim,But i think the magic is okay. But morrowind had the best magic in my opinion.Anyway i think you will like skyrim.

I doubt that they added them to please us. It was planned for a long time, probably long before the game was released.
