Console version NEEDS weapon quick swapping!

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:30 am

The one thing really missing from the console version of Skyrim is the ability to quickly switch between different spell and weapon sets in combat.

What we need is the ability to save our current Weapon / Spell / Shout as a "set" and bind it to the left right or down directional keys.

I know a majority if not ALL of the Skyrim developers play on PC (understandably so), but trust me guys, THIS IS THE REAL IMMERSION KILLER on console right now. Having to stop combat just to switch between a healing and destruction spell is a total mood killer and gets insanely tedious very quickly. It is a really easy fix resource wise since its entirely a coding / UI adjustment and doesnt require an art team. Please don't take for granted this issue just because you play on a PC and don't have to deal with it.

I know you guys value the flow and feel of your game more then other companies. Please consider this adjustment, while it seems minor in reality it is the very crux of gameplay and a major tone changer for console players right now.

Thanks for your time in considering the suggestion.

I play on PC, but you have my full sympathy. That dragon shout kinect thing that was previewed in the gamejam video (and a mod of that has been made for PC - by all accounts it works well) I was actually thinking that the best way to go would be to have voice recognition for the entire inventory.

Problem with consoles is that there is only a limited amount of leftover buttons that you can use for shortcuts, and besides, we already have the Favourites menu. Still, it would be a nice touch if it was implemented.

Favourite a weapon, open favourite menu, highlight your weapon, hold down left/right on D-pad.
Each time you click left/right on the d-pad you will equip that weapon. Click twice to dual wield.
You have 2 quick slots(left or right).

I would be alot better if we had more than 2 slots...

You can to a point. I currently have a three loadout system. In your quick favorites menu, hold left on the D-pad and you get a 1 by it. Alternatively, you can do the same for right.

The way I have it set up for myself, is for my first set I use a bow, for the right on the d pad I use my 2 handed weapon, and if I double tap either of them, it switches to my sword and shield. Love the versatility. You can do it with spells too.

Well put OP. It really does kill the flow. Even the favourites menu brings a halt to combat and ends up being a massive scroll thru - especially for something like a battlemage.

Favourite a weapon, open favourite menu, highlight your weapon, hold down left/right on D-pad.
Each time you click left/right on the d-pad you will equip that weapon. Click twice to dual wield.

That's how it works but it's a PITA if you want to toggle between sword & board and bow. When you switch back from bow to sword you end up with nothing in your left hand so you have to go into the menu to select shield anyway. I'd be in favour of making left & right hand sets in the menu then being able to cycle through them using L & R on the d-pad.

Actually, not! :D you just have sword and board NOT as the quick change. Equip shield and sword, then use left (or right) on d-pad to switch to bow. So when you hit the same direction to UNequip your bow, it goes right to the combo. Trust me, I do it every day :)

Agree as long as they keep the scroll through favorites when hitting the up dpad. I didn't like the way fallout did it because corner ends you could save weapons too are hard to press so pretty much your stuck to only three favorite items.

Get in a real-life fight.
See how quickly you can switch weapons.

Honestly, even with Skyrim's crappy menu system, you don't know how good you've got it.

Well if we're comparing Skyrim to real life, does TIME FREEZE because you decide to put down your cell phone pull out your pocket knife? No, it doesn't. Having to freeze gameplay to switch from a spell to a sword is tedious and unrealistic.
I really wouldn't mind a delay animation to switch weapons if balance is something you are concerned about?

This is already a feature available to the standard PC version, it should also be on the Xbox and PS3. I'm sure Bethesda understands and will consider this suggestion with the intention of improving their game for all platforms.

I like the favorites menu a lot, I like putting what I use frequently in my list and there is nothing wrong with stopping the game to change what you are hawing this is a game after all and it only takes a few seconds anyways.

I would think it would be pretty cool to add Kinect support in the console version. Kinda like in ME3 instead of commanind a squad you can call out spell names. That would be a really cool option. Mid fight you could switch from conjuration to destruction to restoration to alteration without opening a menu.
I'm just not sure how you would get around it with the regular weapons. Maybe saying something like sword would default to picking the best sword in your inventory, or you could use a combination of the fire + sword and it will select the best weapon of that category in your inventory. Just a thought.

And no I think having to actually shout to use the Dragon Shouts would be pretty dumb.

Agreed. The 8 direction hotkey system of Oblivion was a lot better than the abomination of Skyrims favourite menu.

Left and right on the D-Pad are used, but why not the other 6 directions? They did it for Oblivion. Did they think we suddenly lost the ability to push U, UR, UL, D, DR anf DL or something?

This.

I try not to change weapons too much in combat because it takes a while to switch over (much like it would in real life), so it's not too bad most of the time, but I really notice it when I play my mage. I would think that a skilled mage would be able to switch spells in no time. It does get a little tedious scrolling through a list to find a spell that I might use once (like a conjuration spell) then have to scroll back again to get another spell.

There are 2 hotkeys (d pad left and right). More couldn't hurt though.

I learned a trick. I assigned my bow to left and a two-handed weapon to right. But what you can do is after that equip a dual-wield setup: two melee weapons, a spell and a melle (like healing and a sword), two spells (or a master spell) etc. What happens is the game will remember THAT setup. And you can access that set up by pressing left or right twice.

This trick doesn't work for pure mages though.
