Coping with the very large cohort of people over the age of

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 10:35 pm

As America ages (the demographic imperative), what will be the required adjustments needed by our society in order to cope with the very large cohort of people over the age of 65? What changes in retirement policies, Social Security, health care, and housing will be needed? How will our view of growing old have to change?

This.

But, on topic, since it was the Baby Boomers who screwed this country up in the first place would a bullet be fitting?

*nods*

There are a great deal of answers to that unfortunately that I cannot say due to them being quite political in nature. However I will counter that saying that right now as people like myself age the demographic will move where 50 and 70 becomes the new 25 to 35. What we will see is more people living to be centurions possibly older to where they live to be 150 years old. At that point it will become quite difficult to maintain their health as well as being quite expensive.

I support euthanization of elderly criminals not regular elder people. :swear:

Sorry. I'm just angry at the US's current situation. Especially since I'm stuck in a hard place and a rock with my mortgage company and have been backed into a corner with no good options.

Obviously, the proper solution is compulsory mars colonization.

I think he supports hunting season, but I could be wrong..

soylent green tastes crap apparently, so that won't do.

Personally, since space flight tends to have proportionally less of an adverse affect on the elderly, and they would tend to cope with long flight times better than younger people, and some would be used to eating paste out of a tube..

can we send 'em into space?

advantage:
it would give people something to look forward to later in live (adventure of a lifetime, final frontier, that sorta thing) and I might then still get to go to Mars :celebration:

to go hand gliding off of Olympus Mons has to be the ultimate -brown note- experience in my life, best to pack extra diapers

cant believe Darth ninja'ed me on this...

Not extending our lifespan, but extending our usefulness to society and ourselves would help a lot. Who cares if you can last 120 years before you die if you can't remember who you are during the last 30 to 40 years. This isn't political, is it? We just have a duty to remain fit or look for ways to be fit for as long as possible.

The baby boomers are what is going to give me a well paying job!

I think the medical field is going to keep booming until that generation dies off, but then you have to think about this, most of them had kids as well. I know my dad was a baby boomer and he had me and my little sister. So that just means that the medical field is going to keep booming, which in turn makes for better job opportunities for me!

I think as far as healthcare, it's going to change to being extremely focused on things that afflict the elderly and how their cared for.

That is a true to life conversation I had with my great grandfather, God rest his soul.

Of course, I feel as though a senior citizen should be cared for by the government if they wish it so.

Without getting political:

We have culturally moved away from being a society that cares for our elderly relatives to one that is glad to have someone (ANYONE) take them off our hands (be it Social Security, a nursing home, or just ignoring them). I see it as a societal deficiency that will lead to the collapse of American society in the relatively near future.

I should also point out that it isn't the Baby Boomers who are breaking Social Security, it was the people who thought a large-scale ponzi scheme would make a great retirement plan.

Imagine a Mars run by Baby Boomers. The domes would be full of yoga classes and wine tasting bars.

ELderly people who paid into medicare deserve it.
IT was not elderly people who caused the mortgage crisis, but speculators in the finance industry, and hedge fund managers.
As for the national debt, what both poltical parties want is for everyone to bicker, polarization works in their favor. They like being re-elected for failing do their jobs in a timely manner. Because apparently politicans are so much more special than we are.
IF all the unpaid taxes that were due had been collected, we wouldn't have nearly the debt crisis we have. Everyday Joes, who have their income tax deducted every paycheck, (it's adjustable in your W-4) are not by large, not defaulters. Over 400 bilion USD in taxes is out there, and should be paid by the corporations, business, and self employed who know they owe them.
Pension plans, retirement, and medicare went smoothly along for years, it is not what has caused this country's debt fiasco.

This is so gonna get locked.

The humans were never intended to live past 40. :o

But, unfortunately or fortunately, depend how you look at it, we live a lot longer.

I honestly do not find a good solution that doesn't hurt one of many things.
