[REQ] Craftable Sorting

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:58 am

This is as much a probe as a request; this is something added onto my "todo" list of things I want to mod after I finish a playthrough, but if someone's already on it, then.. yay! ;)

I find the giant list of craftables at the campfire/benches a little annoying to sort through. They are alphabetical, but there's no real way to quickly find a craft that you can even try based on skill level or ingredients without individually going through the list and highlighting them. I suppose you can memorize what you can make or do, but I know SOMEONE is going to be adding more craftables for the game as time goes by, so this might be pretty handy.

Basically, I wish that when you approach a campfire/bench, you could sort the crafting list based on a chosen criteria: Alphabetical, Skill Level, Ingredient, or Product Type (chem, ammo, apparel, food, drink, etc); may be useful to automatically highlight or dim crafts which you can actually complete.

Crafts you can complete are already automatically highlighted (if you've got all the ingredients and other requirements). What I'd like is for all the stuff you can currently make to be at the top of the craft menu, then all the stuff you don't have all the parts for below that, and anything you don't have the requirements for can go below them. Would probably require either a UI overhaul or a script extender with string functions, though.

As for crafts being highlighted, they aren't automatically highlighted for me. :/ Are you talking about the description (stuff in the right hand window) on mouseover or the titles of the crafts (left-hand window)?

As for how things should be sorted, I completely agree. Even if I couldn't get the FULL sorting capability that I'm looking for, what you described would be my bare minimum goal. It would be a lot more helpful than picking through a half-ton crafts that are way over my skill level.

Thanks to Norbingal... I'll take a look at that mod when I get home and get a chance. :)

I'm talking about the name of the craftable. It's either bright white or dark. If it's bright white, you can craft it. If it's dark, you can't for some reason (such as not having the required skill or ingredients). No idea why it wouldn't be working that way for you, other than to say it's either a bug or you're mistaken and what you were looking at you probably couldn't craft for some reason.

Nope, definitely not highlighted for me.

My GUI was left the default amber, so I haven't seen "bright white" anything. Did you change your GUI to that color?

I have to manually scroll through the list and mouse-over them. In the right-hand screen, if I have the skill to craft it, it is THEN high-lighted. I.e, "Survival 40/40" would be bright, "Suvival 24/40" would be dark. But that isn't very helpful when I have to do that every single time I'm looking for things within my skill level to try... I won't even go into the obnoxiousness of cross-checking ingredients. ;)

It might possibly be a bug.

Can anyone else describe their experience with using the crafting benches, and what they'd prefer?

OK, not 'bright white' but 'bright whatever color your HUDs at'. I left mine at default Amber as well. Anyways, here's a http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/2163/screenshot30us.jpg I took a while ago. Prior to bringing my cursor (and the selection box) over it, the Gecko Steak bit was still 'highlighted' in that all the other ones had dark text while it had bright text.

Yep, definitely different.

Booo, I say. :P

I've done 3 or 4 game restarts since buying FONV so it won't be fixed that way.

Think I'll still work on a mod of this sort, but it's good being given the heads up ahead of time that my experience isn't the norm.

Also, it sounds to me like while you had the skill to craft the item, you did not have the actual items required (in that case, the item still isn't highlighted) - for example, see the Dog Steak bit higher up, which has the same requirements as Gecko Steak if I remember right, except it requires Dog Meat instead of Gecko Meat). Are you sure you had the actual items required to craft it?

No; the items remain highlighted regardless of whether I had the items OR the skill.

For example, in a new game, I'd have a Survival skill of 15 and no ingredients, and the item would still be lit up until I actually went to it and noticed the "Survival 15/40" was darkened. This was the primary reason that got me interested in the mod in the first place.

Well, that's just weird. I wonder what causes that bug? *shrug* There are a few other bugs with the crafting menus - maybe Darn will fix them when he makes his UI mod?

I just created a mod for this.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35918

Sorts all non-ammo craft recipes so that those you have skill for are at the top alphabetically, while those you do not have skill for are sorted under them by skill requirement.

See screenshots. http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/images/35918-2-1288403016.jpg http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/images/35918-1-1288403015.jpg

How it does this is by:
  • Adding a condition to the recipes that checks for sufficient skill.
  • Adding a duplicate recipe of the same type with a condition that is true if you have insufficient skill. This second recipe has a skill requirement prefixed to it.

One thing modders can do to help keep it cleaned up is to add conditions to the recipes they add. A nice blend of GetItemCount and GetPermAV can help you narrow down the list to only the recipes you can actually create right now.

If someone took the time and applied this same process to vanilla recipes it would go a long way towards keeping it neat.

Very nice. :D I actually just saw your other thread before this.

Awesome work.

Also remember you can filter by chem/aid/food or whatever by the arrow buttons on the left panel's top
