Crafting Weapon Repair Kits

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 3:14 pm

I have just figured out how this crafting stuff works. Yes I'm slow but I'm really a shooter guy. The ability to craft up weapon repair kits for 50 repair and common trivial components is a game changer for me. Probably as useful as discovering how much speech affects the game.

I'm going to go on a crafting weapon repair kits spree and fix up all the broken guns, there are a lot of them and sell em'.

One of my favorite Stalker COP strategies was to get in fights and take all their guns when the fight was over, juice up on strength drug and stagger back to the army tech in Prypiat who would fix my stuff for free. Then I'd go sell all this cherry stuff to the traders. I just liked being a gun runner and it made me pretty good $s.

You can get about 1000 caps worth of repair for free or if you are super lazy and buy your components about 14 caps. You can cruise up to 30 repair, get 'comprehension' for double magazine benefit and pile up components and read 'fixing things' mag for 20 repair then cook up a big pile of weapon repair kits.

Mr House et al can wait. I got some guns to fix.

Good luck....

I just keep all the weapon repair kits for those weapons that can't be fixed by anything other than something rare, even with the right perk.

I personally prefer to sell lots of junky guns, than to spend a lot of time looking for a zillion wrenches, a roll of duct tape, and something that I probably passed up three buildings back...

i don't need repair kits, i just take all my stuff to the guy at the mojave outpost and then save/reload to pickpocket all my caps back, makes a fortune that way.

I've found more weapon repair-kits than duct tape ^^

I took jury rigging at level 14 and like Gunghol only use the kits on rare weapons which can only be repaired by other rare ones.

Personally I feel that it changes the game in a bad way to make repair this easy. Actually *repairing* a gun should be a very difficult thing, requiring a lot of knowledge and a lot of time spent scavenging for parts. These weapons that you're using are hundreds of years old, you aren't going to make them factory-fresh with ducktape and a piece of wire.

Instead, what modest levels of repair should get you is the ability to maintain your weapon. A weapon's mechanical integrity and its cleanliness should be two different thing. Scrubbing out the dirt and powder residue and spider droppings should make your gun work better, but it's never going to be as fast or accurate as it was three centuries ago when it was manufactured, unless you can remanufacture the parts that are worn out.

Because of the way it works now, there's basically no excuse as the player character to ever have a weapon that's less than 75% condition, even while everybody else is wandering around with weapons that barely function and need to be unjammed every third shot. Which spoils the post-apocalyptic flavor, in my opinion.

A part of the problem here is that a gun's damage is so reliant on its condition. Which makes little to no sense. Extreme amounts of wear and fouling in the barrel will certainly slow a bullet down, but it will NOT reduce the bullet's kinetic energy by a whopping 50% or whatever. Wear and fouling will have a much greater effect on accuracy and reliability than it will on muzzle velocity.

I don't mind weapon repair kits, but I think they should've put some sort of max condition that they can repair to. I mean, duct tape and scrap metal should only be able to fix so much; at some point to get it to 100% condition you should have to need parts from an actual gun to fix, which is why then you either need another weapon or to take it to a repair merchant.

I wish they had also added an armor repair kit that worked similarly to what I said above.

I think weapon repair kits make things a lot more convenient, but I always end up hoarding the materials and not crafting any kits since I have more guns to repair my weapons with using Jury Rigging than I have Weapon Repair Kits.

Weapon Repair Kits and Jury Rigging may make things somewhat too easy, but I like having my weapons in optimal condition.

LOL!

I felt the same way.
Once I discovered that the parts used to make Repair Kits are actually strewn all over, I started picking them up like mad. Now, I've got ED-E so loaded down with wrenches, scrap, wonderglue and duct tape that he probably thinks I'm building his replacement!

Another thing that changed the game for me was when I actually started using the reloading benches.
Man, some of the ammo that can be made is phenomenal in my opinion. Also, it adds some extra depth to the game, somehow.

I'm almost afraid to even mess with the campfires, now, or I'll never finish another playthrough. :woot:
