Crash to desktop without warning (like before 1.3.1) at seem

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 2:50 am

When I entered Whiterun (laggy city), Skyrim would crash to desktop without warning. I tried some stuff, then running Skyrim as an administrator fixed it. Then the crashes came back, and now I'm stuck somewhere above Makarth, and whenever I get near a small tree on the path to a dungeon, it crashes. Always at the same moment. And that while I'm running 60fps.
I looked around on the internet and found out this was related to RAM. However, this had been fixed in 1.3.1, and the posts and forum threads I'm finding are all from 2011.
My version of Skyrim is 1.4.21.0.4

Here is dxdiag.txt. I don't think it's relevant because I'm not getting framerate issues.

I'm running the following mods: Sounds of Skyrim: the Dungeons and Realistic Ragdolls and Force. Like the name suggests, the first mod only takes effect in dungeons and the second one only takes effect in places with ragdoll bodies (there aren't any).
I'm running everything vanilla.

1) Remove any and all mods and script extenders
2) Verify files
3) Refresh INIs

That's the basic procedure here.

Also, you're on 32-bit Windows. That may be your issue. How much memory is being used in total when you crash?

Need to VRAM and standard combined, please.

How do I refresh the .ini's? And how do I review how much memory is being used at a certain moment? The task manager only shows the current moment.

Delete Skyrim.ini and Skyrimprefs.ini in (My)Documents/(My?)Games/Skyrim and launch the game. The INI files will regenerate. The last part, I'm looking up. My usual methods are not really for the every day user, so I'm having to look it up >.>

Refreshing the .ini's didn't work. And it would be strange if it would be because of my RAM, cause it didn't do this pre 1.4.1

Are you keeping the mods and script extenders gone? Also, are you using any texture replacers?

I am using texture replacements of the HD texture pack for the weapons, clothes and the armor. I'll see if turning them off makes a difference.

EDIT: Didn't work. I deleted old mods, but it didn't work.

Bingo. You're running out of memory.
Will installing more RAM fix this? Or is it a problem with skyrim?

Neither. The issue is that you're on a 32-bit OS. The VRAM is counted with RAM as far as the system is concerned. Thus, the texture packs is eating up your usable memory. You'd need to switch to a 64-bit OS. Don't know why you're even on a 32-bit OS, to be honest. You're unable to use about half of the RAM you've even got installed.

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.111025-1505)
Language: Dutch (Regional Setting: Dutch)
System Manufacturer: HP-Pavilion
System Model: FR379AA-ABH m9362.nl
BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Phenom? 9550 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 6144MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 3070MB RAM

Green is good,

RED IS BAD.

as deaths_soul stated, your only able to use half of the install ram you have... your running into problems because your using 32bit windows.. which is officially a dead/dieing OS due to what your experiencing...

moving to 64bit windows is 99.9% likely to solve all your woes, and actually increase your performance significantly.

Essentially your machine is hamstringed right now, it'd be like cutting off one of your arms and legs and then sticking marbles in your mouth, you wouldn't exactly be able to perform very well as a singer/musician.

Same here: with latest patch again CTD. Not as much as pre 1.3 but at random sometimes CTD. The 1.4 patch is good all in all, way more smoother and so on. Just the sometimes random CTD is back.
This was before the HD texture package and also without mods: all clean Skyrim, checked and all, game generated INI's and so on.
But ... it's on Windows 7 Prof 64 bit with enough memory and CPU (see sig).
So I will keep my habit of hitting F5 a lot :)

So users with 64 bit have crashes too. I thought that I would have to change my 32 to 64 but I'm not changing it. But do you recommend me to change it? and if the crash doesn't change? It's a kind of a hard situation. I've got 32 bits and some graphics patches but just those of weapons ones and faces. If I delete these mods, would the game stop crashing? I'm stucked, really, I dunno what to do.

Um...running out of physical memory should not cause the game to crash. It could hurt performance (although probably not by a disastrous amount), but unless there is a bug related to memory use in the game having less than the optimal amount of RAM will not cause a program to crash. CTD's are caused by bugs and compatibility issues, not system specs.

I wouldn't go through the effort to reinstall Windows and buy more RAM just to solve this issue.

I'm with Softnerd.

I've wondered to myself if my 32 bit windows is the cause of all my recent crashes to desktop at random intervals. And I've considered the possibilty of updating it, getting more ram, or (hell) even buying a brand new computer since this one is getting old anyways.

But then I consider these things:

1) As someone else stated, having an older version of windows would cause poor quality and low FPS etc, but should not cause crashes;

2) Most people reporting these crashes (including myself) have been able to play the game already. (As for myself I had hundreds of hours played with barely any crashes, but now recently I'm getting them all over the place.) If my system is to blame, how do you explain the fact that I ran the game for hundreds of hours flawlessly?

3) After searching incessantly online (literally dozens of hours total in the last week or so) I have found that many, many different specs, machines, systems, Windows 32 64 7 ultra professtional etc etc etc, basically ANY computer seems to be susceptible to these sudden, random crashes to desktop. Which makes me very nervous about spending potentially hundreds of dollars to upgrade my rig JUST for Skyrim when there is a very good chance that it wouldn't even fix the problem anyway.

4) This is the first time I have ever had ANY problem running ANY game on my computer. I can't even run Vanilla Skyrim anymore (and I have *never* used the enhanced texture pack, and I always play on reasonable settings since I don't care that much about graphical quality.)

So... yeah. I am not a computer genius but I am usually able to know enough (or figure out enough) to get by and make do. But based on what I've seen in all my research I would highly recommend that you do NOT upgrade your system for Skyrim right away. Upgrading may very well be the solution (in other words, I could of course be wrong about my entire post), but I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Hopefully Bethesda will find some kind of memory leak in their game and be able to fix it in a patch. I am going to be as patient as I can, even though it is incredibly frustrating....

Good luck.

I totally agree with Dahveed. It does not make any sense to upgrade your HW due to Skyrim crashes.
For me, I started playing Skyrim right after it was released. With respect to crashes I had no issues at all with the early versions 1.0 and 1.1.
The freezing issue began with version 1.2 (as they optimized Core 2 Duo performance) and did not get better with 1.3.
Now with version 1.4 it is very, very stable. I was able to play many hours (> 30h) w/o any crash. Since playing version 1.4 there was one complete freeze and one CTD.
My PC runs WinXP SP3 32 bit; Pentium Core2 Duo 6600, 2 GB RAM, ATI HD 4870 (1 GB, ATI 12.1).

I have no issue at all since running this PC config with any other PC game out there, but Skyrim.

A friend of mine runs the following PC config and had no crash at all independent of any Skyrim version:
+ AMD Athlon II X3 440
+ MSI 8800 GTS 640MB
+ WinXP SP3 32 bit
+ 4 GB RAM

My opinion: Skyrim has basic SW issues which behave differently on different PC configs.

This 64-bit vs. 32-bit Windows excuse is often cited (by the same individuals) when there is no evidence to support it. Although it is true that 64-bit Windows will allow for access to more system memory, the game runs fine on 32-bit Windows. That's not to say that you aren't better off with a 64-bit OS that can access more memory, especially if you want to use a lot of mods, texture replacers, etc. If you are experiencing crashes, it is likely due to mods, audio/video drivers or improperly configured ini files. The ini files are meant to be rebuilt with each update, so for some people it may be necessary to delete them and allow the launcher to create them from scratch.

Also, I see people (again, the same individuals) repeatedly instructing others to "verify files." The option to verify the local game cache that is available through steam will only download missing files. It will not, for instance, remove files that are not part of the base installation. If you have errant DLLs from a mod/injector/script extender, this option won't remove said DLL files, even if they are the most likely cause of instability.

understand the problem.

Making a blanket statement about how one CTD is related to one thing and another is related to another and then stating how ones version of windows (32bit vs 64bit) couldn't possibily have an impact as it SHOULD clearly indicate that there is utterly not CTDs on the 64bit side is well... unfortunately just a lack of understanding of the problem.

Like any computer/game/software/hardware related problem, determine the cause first, exhaust ALL avenues of the issue and then proceed from there.

Doing as much research on the problem and specially considering the numerous things on the internet that you could be looking at doesn't really give much of any form of understanding WHEN other users are reporting either as inaccurate or unreliable assessments of the problems they are having.

One person could be CTDing simply due to their use of 32bit windows and the component hardware in use with the combination of hitting the known memory wall. Yes you can crash if you lack memory, indeed you can, this is reproduceable and easily confirmable provided your willing to exercise a little trial and error instead of bickering about it and not understanding how it works.

CTDing also can be caused by countless other issues that will effect both the 32bit users and 64bit users... this is obviously due to a game related issue, either caused by the user or an outside source.... Typically it's not uncommon to find that even when a user hasn't specifically done anything, they have unintentionally or unaware of what they were doing, considering my occupation and what i do and work, you'd be surprised how often this happens, and how bizarre the senarios can play out, even some customers getting nearly violent in their defence of them not doing whatever when in fact i can trace it back that either they or someone they allowed to use the computer did do.

Cause and Effect.

Now some people run into the corrupted save, or whatever issue.

Another common problem I've seen is how someone will mod their ini files.. an update will come, and bam, suddenly those ini changes have been reset resulting in the games inability to load at all.. or crash sooner than expected.

Additionally optimisations or changes to the nature of the game can make a system more or less likely to exhibit a problem that wasn't as clearly visible before. I don't know how many machines I've seen with a stray physical memory or bad sector that didn't show any clear sign of problem for dozens of use, and then something minor changes or without warning a change is made without realising it resulting in a totally unuseable machine.

Verifying files will check if any files are missing AND/OR corrupted... so if a single file was downloaded improperly, or through say a failure to write right/memory fault or some other fault of the computer but not necessarily the game/steam, it's a good place to start, it happens unfortunately...

Like i said.. process of elimination/trial and error...

Still the 32bit vs 64bit discussion while interesting .. has it's breaking point. There is plenty of evidence showing the issues and major limitations of 32bit and it's becoming more problematic with each new game the arrives or some of the newer programs that present themselves. It's unavoidable that the transition will have to be made, there is no reason to stick with it at all anymore. So why keep trying to? specially when many people have paid large sums of money for computer components they cannot use due to this very limitation/problem that they've created for themselves. Someone buy a 6gb or 12gb triple channel kit and then install windows 32bit... how silly. Or those that buy 4gb of ram and then install a 1 or 2gb video card followed by installing 32bit windows.... really?

Commit size/total physical/virtual/swap file/memory allocation is the concern for those with 32bit OSES, programs and the OS under 32bit have 2 things that are required to be set to exceed this value.... One is in the program itself dubbed Large Address Aware (Dubbed LAA in short) and for the OS, the 3gb switch must be enabled to exceed the 2gb limits imposed. PAE could be implemented at a very high chance of presenting serious problems and isn't recommended.

The way this 2 switches work is that they must be enabled at the same time, otherwise one or the other will over-ride the other... Program hits 2gb total commit size (which isn't at all UNCOMMON for skyrim the moment Hi-Res/HD DLC pack is enabled, whatever available ram is available up to 2gb, it'll use, and put the excess in swap/virtual space, but if the combined values hit 2gb... CRASH guaranteed.

You can't stop it unless you do 1 of 3 things.

1. Continue to run vanilla skyrim with little to no mods at all.

2. Setup the LAA/3gb switch (at the cost of potential risk of issues, personally I've ran the 3gb switch and PAE.. but i definitely found PAE a very very bad idea

3. Install windows 64bit resulting in the program having totally unhindered full blown access to the ENTIRE 32bit Maximum address space for itself which allows you to really start cramming mods and textures and such into the game without any real worry for hitting a CTD DUE to the previous restrictions.

Understand what your discussing, what your problem is... and determine the best solution for you...
